Article: The Armory Fieldhouse and a Hidden Championship History
A few months ago, a t-shirt company started a newsletter with weekly stories about college basketball history. The very first article was about UC's Armory Fieldhouse. It's not very long, but had some stuff that was new to me.

https://www.homefieldapparel.com/blogs/c...newsletter

Quote:Over its 22-year span as their home court, the Bearcats' men's basketball team posted a 247-29 record.

* I am not affiliated with this t-shirt company. It just popped up on my Google one day when I was searching for UC shirts.

RE: Article: The Armory Fieldhouse and a Hidden Championship History
It was the ultimate home court advantage--a real snake pit during the Catlett years when I attended games there. I will only add that the level of competition visiting in those later years, when UC competed as an independent, wasn't always the best.

But the Missouri Valley Conference was a beast during UC's championship years (before my time) and the Armory-Fieldhouse is hallowed ground in college basketball lore from Oscar's record performances to hanging all those banners.

My hope is that the building could be re-purposed, keeping some of its historic character. Sadly, I think the reality today is that restoration costs with asbestos remediation, etc., will ultimately dictate demolition rather than remodeling.

247-29? Time to start playing there again.

Attended most games from 61 - 65.

Great times.

That said there is not architectural style worth maintaining.

One correction on the article: Oscar was not a point guard at UC. He could play anywhere on the court, but he was a “forward” and in today’s basketball lingo would be viewed as a “3”.

I've always wanted to walk inside of the Armory and take in the nostalgia, but I don't really have any connections to any current staff or even students on campus. Any idea how I would go about getting such an opportunity? Are there ever any events where it's open to the public?

25 - 30 years ago when I was a student (good gravy I’m old) you could just walk in there. I played intramural basketball in there.

You think you are old - Oscar and I were in the same graduating class!

My dad told stories about watching games there. Was really neat.
He also talked about how he used to yell himself hoarse at football games.

My guess is that after all of the structural and abatement issues are cleared up, Armory will again be used by the basketball programs, as a dedicated practice/training facility.

It was fun going to games there in the late '50s and early '60s, but upon reflection, it seems like it was s huge high school gym.
