RE: Home game added vs. Elon (Saturday, 6 PM) - CofC games cancelled
Impressive post Getm! Well reasoned thoughts that make very good sense to me! I will add that I saw a study yesterday that they only had 49% efficacy for 1 of the vaccines tested against an African variant. That however doesn’t imply that it didn’t lessen the severity of those that developed it in the study. It likely helped even for those.

Does anyone have any idea who the magnificent 7 will be? Guesses could be a fun thing to do. It would be nice for the seniors to go out with a win. And, I would love to see Shy back out there.

Jack Merthens, team manager, has been added to the team roster! Is he part of the magnificent 7 or does the 6’1” product make it 8?

A $hitshow of a year. Thank goodness these kids are getting an extra year of eligibility from this. As a bonus, they can likely get close to a masters on scolly which is something that wasn't possible before

Have you considered that some of the same behaviors being used to try to prevent COVID spread are also effective ways to avoid the flu? I’ll bet the common cold frequency has dropped a good bit too.

Not saying it was all worth it by any means, but it is a decent silver lining.

Absolutely that accounts for SOME of it, but zero chance there is that big of a drop based on that alone.

Both times I’ve taken my kids to the doctor with a fever this year they have run influenza A and B tests. I get it. You think it’s all exaggerated. Some of it is. Variant this variant that right now, for example. Double masks, etc. But several of y’all are just relentless contrarians with a lot of strong feelings. I’m over this crap, too. When all have had a chance at vaccination I’m not holding back. And yes the vaccines available in the US should be good enough for these variants...even SA strain.

But a simple check on influenza positivity rates in 2020/2021 season vs the 5 year average is all you need to evaluate your assertion of the great influenza cover up. The 5 year influenza positivity rate is around 15% but for this season is 0.17%. The current pace of testing by reporting clinical and public labs is also set to exceed or match the highest number of tests performed in any of the preceding 5 flu seasons. This literally took me about 5 minutes to research. So while I agree with your frustrations and am also empathetic to your covid fatigue, just do some quick fact checking before you project your feelings on everyone.
03-yawn If the last year has taught anyone who likes numbers at all anything, it's that there isn't much trust in any of them. Think about how many times the goal posts have moved with numbers?? So in your "feelings" do you really think that masks have decreased the Flu by the numbers you presented me as factual? Just curious

I didn’t infer a reason for the drop but I’m sure there are host of reasons and most are probably behavioral related /proximity of people. I’ll let your deductive reasoning skillset or feelings, if you choose, fill in the gaps.

A mask hasn’t kept my family from doing one thing this year. Certainly there are better hills to die on than tirelessly complaining about mask mandates. I can easily think of bigger bones to pick with pandemic policies than a mask. But it’s your fight and has been and likely will be for the foreseeable future. I could care less if you wear it. And I won’t once you are offered a vaccine.

Sorry, but I witnessed them trying to include Covid as a reason of death on my father in laws death certificate back in July. He died of natural causes. He didn't have any symptoms, nor did he test positive before or after death, yet, they tried to put it on there until we fought them on it. I was skeptical before that and that certainly raised my skepticism further, I'm sure you can see why.
I wear a mask because i don't have a choice, as soon as i do, i won't. And it's most certainly affected my life and many others negatively. I have been to the gym a handful of times in the last year(i used to go 3-5 x per week). I tried a half dozen times with a 1/2 dz different masks and I can't breath for $hit in them.
But i'll digress., no need to derail this thread further.

Back on Topic, who the heck dresses tomorrow? And i see they are doing Sr. Night. I'm interested to hear if any of our Seniors would want to return for the "free" year specifically Ty and Mike.(but Bowen too if Coach doesn't sign some bigs). There has been very little conversation around that. Man this year has sucked, lack or reporting, lack of info coming out of coach, covid....

UNCW basketball tweeted out pictures from practice recently with the below names suited up...

Okauru
Gadsden
Pridgen
Dodd
Boggs
Phillips
Harvey

I read that senior day was on with Bowen, Estime, Okauru, and Gadsden being honored. Not sure what that will look like though. In regards to the extra year of eligibility I wouldn't expect to hear anything on that until after the season. I'm sure they all have their options to weigh, similar to what I read on some of the baseball players that decided to come back. I'd imagine a guy like Okauru would at least look into playing pro ball overseas. It'd be awesome to get him back though.

Also, coach tweeted this morning that Sims had successful surgery.

Wow, interesting no Bowen. And relying on Shy to play heavy mins out of the gate. Wouldn't you think Mike could improve his pro stock having a full senior year good or better than how he was playing here? Aside from the obvious benefit of getting a good amount of credit towards a masters.
Also interesting about the Tweet. Seems Simm's injury was quite some time ago, (6,7 weeks ago?) did they just operate now?

Sure, Mike could definitely improve his stock by coming back... I think it's something he should consider when making his decision. Personally, I think all the seniors should be brought back if they desire after the ridiculous protocols of this season. I just don't know all that goes into them having a scholarship available or not.

The scholarship availability piece will likely be the main glue there.

It's seems likely that would benefit big time programs with more money in the coffers than it would a school like UNCW.

Scholarships are renewed annually. I don’t see us financially being able to afford more than than 13 allowed currently (NCAA expected to up that next year due everyone getting an extra year). If Okauru wants to come back that is a no brainer. Everyone else it would be best to move on to another program. Let Siddle get his players that fit in his system. That goes along with guys he hasn’t played much. Ex. Tolefree, Dodd. There will be a lot of transfers this year due to not having to sit next year, hopefully Siddle will be able to capitalize on a big man or two. He has a a solid Freshman class, just need an experienced big.
