Of course it wouldn't. There would be a small percentage of the people on here who would name call & shout at the rain as they do on here, but that's because they're so far down the rabbit hole they're incapable of seeing past their own immediate world. For the most part people would discuss and likely find some common ground.
Social media outlets like this, while entertaining for discussion sometimes, have really made the polarization worse.
Yup - you would think it would free up discussion and debate, instead it has become a who can yell the loudest and put you down the most cockfight to drown out those you don't agree with.
Internet bullying is popular because there is no threat of physical confrontation. This freedom of expression is filtering out of the anonymous zone however. You get used to shooting your mouth off on the internets, and you feel emboldened to do it out in public because you are so used to saying whatever you want.
I am certainly not the toughest guy in the room, however I am physically imposing enough that many would not say to my face what many have said here (to me or others). It is the best and worst thing about social media. You can express yourself freely, but you can also express yourself without threat or fear of a beat down if you want to be aggressive about it.
I am fine with opposing views, I am not fine with smarmy and often belittling ways of presentation. "I think Trump is an A-Hole" is much different that "I think Trump is an A-Hole and you are a racist for backing him". I am probably going to knock you out if you say that to my face - but most would never say that to my face.
TigerGreen is good with me, we all take our shots and low blows at people, but you are generally respectful of the proper discourse.
I am willing to bet that most if not all of those on my ignore list would not take the tone they take on this board if we were sitting at the bar talking across the table at each other.
Thanks. And yes; if someone comes for me I'm certainly not going to back down, but I would always prefer to at least attempt to communicate on here like I would with someone in person. Of course it devolves from time to time.
There are some here who immediately default to the name calling & 'libtard' nonsense, but in general those are the ones who aren't contributing to any meaningful discussion anyway.

Social media really has polarized society and exacerbated issues. It's also opened and entirely new avenue for bullying, especially Fakebook.
I agree, but would add the 24 hr news media as well. Those two together, IMO, is what has divided so many people. 24hr news networks have to fill time, and drive viewers (for $$) by filling the majority of that time with controversial topics. Been going on since 9/11. Social media allows people to create ideological silos that they never leave.

I'd argue that it started wayyyy before 9/11.
Once the Fairness Doctrine was done away with in 1987, you started getting Rush Limbaugh-types on the radio spouting their drivel, and 24 hour news stations started coming around at the same time (they wouldn't have been held to the FD anyway, but FCC had control of radio & broadcast TV).
Too bad we can't reinstate a 'fairness doctrine' on cable/satellite.

Ah, you are correct. I think CNN started in the early 1980s. I just remember it getting intolerable shortly after 9/11 with the constant scroll bar across the bottom of the screen.

Libs dont want the fairness doctrine. That would cripple MSNBC, CNN, and every major news media outlet in the country from the constant lies they promote as "news"

That's where I draw the line w/ non-conservatives. Don't care to be around them or socialize with them. Sit around, have a cold beer w/ my righty friends and family, laugh at the aggrieved leftists and make jokes at their expense? Sure. Willfully be around them? Nope.

I've mentioned it a few times on here, but a few years ago I completely disconnected from social media and I haven't missed it at all. Unplugging was one of the best decisions I've made in a while. That stuff is a cancer on society.

This is me. I've cut them off, even some relatives. I used to get along with everyone, not anymore.

It's why when having garage beers on my property, politics and religion not allowed. I'd rather we ***** about our wives and tell tall tales about how we used to be. It's also NE Florida and we are a bit more interested in fishing and sports.

And who started that? Libtards. Argue if you want. Most conservatives simply want to be left alone, to live their lives, to raise their children, to worship their God. I personally have never in my whole life been political until about a year ago. You asswipes forced this on me. You forced this on a lot of us. I hope you continue to be happy however that turns out.
You're being controlled by them and if shows in how angry you've become. You used to be a reasonable person to debate and carry on with. I see very little of that any longer.

The only good thing about Fakebook, other than reminding me to wish some distant relative I forgot about a happy birthday, is to steal memes and repost them, which then gets me a ban for content I found right on their damn site.
