Beating VCU and the RPI is up to #36 in the country. Pretty great stuff.

Guys I'll take the blame for this one. I showed up in the stands and suddenly FIU scored 6 runs. I won't be at the double header tomorrow so we should be good.

One game. Ease up.

1969. The NY Mets had never had a winning season. Open the season against expansion Montreal Expos. Some youngster named Tom Seaver on the mound. Seaver and the Mets get shelled. Lose 10-9 to a team playing there first official game ever. Expos finish 52-110. Mets 100-62. Mets win the World Series in 5 games over the Orioles. Tom Seaver wins 25 games and the Cy Young award. One game does not a series or season make. Yet the NY press crucify the Mets after that first game.

Ease up yourself. My comment about losing the conference opener at home as being not a good start to the conference season for them was accurate and I will stand by it - thank you. It isn't saying that they no longer have a chance to have a good finish in the conference race! My comment was not crucifying the Monarchs after that first game either if that was the Mets reference you were attempting to make to my comment.

By the way, I'm very familiar with the '69 Mets as I followed them daily that summer as they came back to overtake the Cubs in the pennant race, and ultimately go on to defeat the Orioles in the World Series as a huge underdog. I could name off the top of my head most of their starters, starting pitchers, and several of the relievers from that '69 team. Tom Seaver was my favorite Met that season and I followed his career even after he left the Mets. I was then and still am today a huge fan of the Mets. I watched yesterday's pre-season game against the Nationals this afternoon after I recorded it from last night. The Tides became the Met's AAA team in '69 and played their first season at Frank D. Lawrence Stadium in Portsmouth. It was the last season of baseball played at the stadium. I still remember several of their minor league players from that season as well - Choo Choo Coleman (catcher), Amos Otis (center fielder), Michael Jorgensen (1B) and Jon Matlack (starting pitcher) were my favorites. I followed the Tides games via the radio that season as well.

And the Mets destroyed their farm system trading away that talent to get back to the World Series. They got back to one in 75, lost in 7 then slowly declined to a horrible team for most of the 70s and early 80s. They gutted their farm system. Jorgensen was one of those traded. He was traded with Tim Foli and Ken Singleton to Montreal for Rusty Staub. Those Mets never did win a WS but Foli did with the Pirates and Singleton did with the Orioles. Amos Otis was traded to the Royals. 4 more went to the Angels for Jim Fregosi.

Monarchs take game 4 against FIU 16 - 9 and win the series. We gave up an early 9 -0 lead but came back to win.

RE: 2021 BASEBALL
Couple of thoughts from the FIU series:

We certainly have a very entertaining team. We can score runs in bunches and give them up in bunches as well. No lead is safe.

We seem to have a gritty team. They battle hard.

I can't truly question Finwood's pitching moves without knowing all the details. But I was thinking that Gertner was pulled too early in Friday's game. Pitch count? Injury? Not sure of the whole story there.

Using Hartline for 2 innings in a 14-0 blowout in game 2 was strange. Thought he should have been saved for the last two games of the series. It didn't hurt us though.

Winning 3 of 4 games in 3 days is hard. This crazy schedule is going to be interesting. We will need a deep pitching staff. Which makes me wonder what the story is with Rivera (hasn't pitched in a month) and Muly (hasn't pitched all season). Anyone know?

As a long time Yankee fan, it was interesting to see sons of three former Yankees on the FIU team. The sons of Joe Girardi, Raul Ibanez, and Orlando (El Duque) Hernandez all played in the series. Add to that, Tony Womack's son played against us for Norfolk St. Womack played for the Yankees for one season but Yankee fans probably know him better for his unlikely hit against Mariano Rivera in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series that help win it for Arizona.

I strongly recommend that you guys watch the movie Frequency. There are some great references to the '69 Mets in the movie.

That was the first year I began following sports closely. I remember watching the Mets in the postseason. I can still name the starting lineup off the top of my head.

seen it,

Mets swept the Braves in 3 to win the league title.

Forget which game, Nolan Ryan struck out Hank Aaron and the follow on batter asked Hank what the kid threw, "Smoke" was Hank's reply
