Michigan turned into a basketball school a few decades ago.

It's great having Big Jim up at Ann Arbor. We really enjoy his coaching style down here in the Buckeye state!

Ryan Day/Chris Holtmann
Jim Harbaugh/Juwan Howard

I like Ohio State's dynamic duo more than Michigan's. Juwan is obviously proving to be a very fine coach, no disrespect towards him.

probably a few Ohio St fans would love to see Howard go to the NBA(which I think is possible)

Is that supposed to be an insult? And is this coming from a Virginia fan?

Nah, bring it. We want to be the best which means you have to beat the best.

Noticed Alabama has turned into something of a Basketball school. And our other rival Clemson ... never mind.

Only Livers had major minutes on the 2018 championship game team.
Currently, Hunter Dickinson is a Freshman and there are two key transfers (grad transfer Mike Smith from Columbia and Chaundee Brown from Wake Forest).

Haven’t paid much attention to their makeup, but I said a month ago before they smashed Purdue they’re a legitimate threat to win it all. Gonzaga will fold, as they always do. I’m predicting Michigan and Baylor as shoe-ins for the Final 4.

Had Jordan Poole not enter the 2019 draft, they were seen as a top 5 team. Then he left and so did Belein. Juwan Howard's first season was more surprising due to his lack of experience as HC as opposed to lack of overall roster talent. Having Phil Martello there is sure a factor in their success, but Juwan is running things and is in on recruits which never considered Belein even before the issue which caused his NBA departure.

Well, we’ll see if Howard is a great head coach or another Kevin Ollie (former player that struck lightning early).

I think Howard is recruiting a lot better than Ollie did.

It’s not really a dig at basketball, to me it’s just a fun way to think about a rivalry.

As an outsider, I’ve just enjoyed the Michigan v Ohio State rivalry as the stereotypical “elitist” versus “populist” match-up...both schools are fine, but the rivalry can take special meaning when you can associate a broader societal competition. In this case, it downplays the importance of The Game (OSU is just too dominant)...and gives the Wolverine fans some solace with basketball.

I believe that a similar dynamic also occurs with UT-Austin v Oklahoma games. These sorts of manufactured rivalry stereotypes are overtly promoted internationally...Real Madrid v Barcelona (Spain), River Plate v Boca Juniors (Argentina), or Universidad Catolica v Colo-colo (Chile)...it helps enhance the interest in sports.

Is Howard an exception to the alumni-with-no-college-coaching-experience that fail (Mullin, Ewing, Hardaway, Drexler, etc.)? He has done incredibly impressive work at UM, although one has to ask if it is due to Beilein’s program that he walked into, unlike the others which were rebuild jobs.

Yeah it's really tough to lump him in with those others.

I think Howard is recruiting a lot better than Ollie did.

He's in a position to recruit better. Ollie wasn't coaching a BE team. Tough to get recruits hyped for Tulane or East Carolina.

Not yet.

But in his first 3 years, he's consistently produced NIT-worthy teams.

compared to where they were prior- that's saying something...

3 years prior to him there- KP ranked 75/101/161
1st 3 years him there- KP ranked 56/59/45(this year)

Memphis right now is 7th team out in bracketville(the top bracketologist). It wouldn't take much at all for them to make the tourney(may need to win out regular season, which would include a home win over Houston last game of season) and then not to get upset in the conference tourney.
