They bumped the game off ESPN for the South Carolina women's BB game.

Thank God.

If it weren't for that 55-11 run we would have won.

Time for him to go, although I believe he will get a Covid pass. Nobody is going to pay to watch this crap. It seems like Brannen is our version of Steve Donahue, a good Xs and Os coach who succeeds at the midmajor level, but comes up dry when called upon to recruit and manage high major talent

RE: Game Day Thread: Cincy at Coog High
Not here to politic over whether Brannen is under achieving. There appears to be another thread for that anyways. i will say that Mike Saunders upped his game today so that was a positive. Tari looked like he had put up some numbers but those seem like garbage time numbers.

That said, too many negatives from the rest of the squad to really give us any chance today. MAW was a non-factor, Diarra was a negative. Didn't matchup well with their length. The officiating led to a bunch of our guys being in foul trouble. The other thing was that Houston was allowed to be more physical with our players when they were driving the lane. That does two things: first, it affects the quality of the shot that we are getting off; second, it has a chilling effect on our players movement, because they become hesitant to drive the lane knowing that they aren't going to get calls. The Bearcats played foolishly on a lot of possessions but i definitely think the officiating messed up our rhythm.

i know this isn't in his offense but i wonder if Coach Brannen would consider playing KW in the high post similar to what Jarron did last season? KW's handle isn't great. Getting him in a position where he has a shorter route to the hoop if he tries to take it to the rim or he can jab step to get space and put up a mid-range. He might have an option to drive and kick or hit a baseline cutter.

if not that, i would like to see more pick and roll with KW and Vogt/Eason. His handle isn't great and he doesn't get the type of separation that he needs when trying to score off the dribble. Using a screen might give him the half-step separation to get to the rim more effectively.

Whatever the case may be, we are definitely better when KW is a contributor and he's not the type to get amped off of getting stops or rebounds. KW is a square peg. Let's try and figure out how to get a square shaped hole for him to fit in to on offense.

What I want Brannen to explain/correct is this phenomena of how we hang with teams until X point of the game, then we just collapse.

I really don't look at these guys and say "wow, they really suck" but they just plain don't get the job one.

I don't know if Brannen is the guy for this job. Houston's good but they should NEVER beat us by 40.

NEVER.
Always is a stretch. Their defense was bad in 2007, 2008 and 2009. It took time for mick to put his print on the program.

Cronin came here, had Cedric McGowan and built it from there.

This guy walked into a top 20 job and has turned us into ECU.

and 2 years from now, you'll probably be singing the praises of BRANNEN. SOME of you screamed for Cronin's head and he did a pretty good job, didn't he?

Cronin did a "pretty good" job, but pretty good was never good enough in the NCAA tournament.

Don’t think my pulse went over 60 at any point of that game. This team is hard to watch because it’s largely just boring basketball.

This doesn't let Brannon off the hook, but 2018 was also the year we had that sickening loss to Nevada in the second round. At some point, you have to ask why our Corvette sets record lap times in qualifying, but keeps wiping out in turn one on race day.

Yep, I was asleep by the time we went down by 10, woke up at halftime and switched over to UM-OSU.

Like a parent I was disappointed but not mad. Disappointed can be worse. I am positive for the future of the program though. I like Brannen's style of play and I like the young recruits he has brought in. If I see signs of giving up during the rest of the year, I will probably feel different though. We got "boat raced", as Brannen said, by the #6 team. We are not a top 25 team. Let's hope our young Bearcats remember how this feels and are motivated by this feeling.

It stinks we lost obviously but I think people are too hung up on that one loss in what was otherwise an excellent season. Nevada had a good team with 2 NBA players. It was an unfortunate match-up for us. Nature of a one loss and you're out tournament is that only one team goes home happy. Nevada's program hasn't exactly taken off since that win. I was frustrated with our inability to go on a run in the tournament, don't get me wrong, but I'd take it compared to this in a heart beat.

Yes I think every Bearcat fan would take the best UC team since 2002 over the worst UC team since 2009.

Fundamentally that's not really the choice. 2018 was Mick's peak having absolutely drilled the main recruit in 3 straight classes (Clark, Evans, Cumberland) and recruited quality role players to play with them. He'd been in the program building and building and building for more than a decade. He didn;t recruit anyone close to those 3 after that. The dropoff in recruiting was obvious.

So now we have a guy in year 2....trying to win with a roster that includes 2 guys that were on the team 2 years ago. One is ideally a role player/borderline starter asked to be the star (Williams), the other is a guy who ideally wouldn't see the floor (Dou). He's tried to blend all these first and second year guys in the program in the weirdest season in college basketball history. It's a 2008/2009 type situation but with less time to integrate the players and teach them to play together. It's a perfect storm bad situation for Brannen and it's hard to make snap judgments beyond that.

Will Brannen ultimately succeed here? I don't know. A lot will depend on holding this core together and then what he does with this recruiting class. If he misses this year, he's probably not going to be the guy. He needs front court depth and quality. He needs a scoring wing. Then he needs a real offseason so the players can grow together. I hope it works. I don't know if it will, but it's really hard to say right now.

i beg to differ. That game reinforced on a national level what a lot of Bearcats supporters already felt: That mick was a good game prep coach, but not a good in-game coach. He could keep the tourney streak alive, be competitive for conference championships, but his ceiling was prominently on display.

i think it also confirmed something for mick: That he couldn't win it at Cincy (and i don't know if he'll be able to win it anywhere). i think he wins that game, it changes his mentality about the ceiling of the program as a whole.

in my opinion, that could easily be characterized as a program changing loss.

Yea. That loss stings so much more as time passes. If that team had found its way to the final four (very likely if they held on) Mick probably doesn't miss so badly on the next couple recruiting classes. Things are really there to succeed even if Mick does leave for UCLA.

My concern isn’t that Mick is gone it’s how Bohn handled it followed by the hiring of Brannen. No I didn’t want NVE or Frank Martin but an actual search that went beyond the metro area.

Brannens style would be fine if we had guards that could handle it. Right now they play too fast for the personnel. To many TO’s
Second there are no shooters on this team.
Third Free Throws percent is awful
Fourth. There is no go to player.
Houston just drove hard to the basket points in the paint allowed was a joke. UC did not get many.
Fifth. Rebounding was terrible
UC looked like a high school team. Sorry that’s how I feel watching the game.

We need a rim protector and a couple of wings who can shoot the 3 next year. Those types of players will be available on the transfer market. I don't think it's an overstatement to say that this staff's ability to recruit impact transfers this offseason will define whether Brannen will coach out his contract. Keep the core together, find a couple dudes in the transfer market, and get a full offseason in, and we can be in business. Whiff on our targets and reach for low-major talent, he'll be gone within two years.

Maybe Brannen should consider a run for the Senate. Alabama is no longer available, but maybe there's another state willing to bet on a washed-up coach.
