Let's cut to the chase on the Wolverines shall we. The greatest coach they had was Bo Schembechler. He never won a national championship. I liked Bo he was gritty and his Michigan teams played tough. But if he is your modern day touchstone to Michigan Coaching greatness they've all been vastly overrated.

For basketball they've faired a bit better. But just a bit.

I did not realize hardway failed?

Yeah it's really tough to lump him in with those others.

Hardaway has yet to be a failure — though he easily could end up being so. He's recruiting well and has the Tiger fans engaged. He's winning more than losing. None of that is failure. Now, as to winning big games during the regular season and the post-season ... the jury is out.

I just learned Phil Martelli is on Howard’s staff. That’s an incredible resource to have for a young coach.

Juwan hiring him last season was crucial to their immediate success as one who could assist him through the process of NCAA rules and the day-to-day of being a college coach.

Really? He’s a spring chicken career-wise. Thanks for the nitpick.

There are coaches damn near 30 years older than him.

Martelli as an assistant was really fortuitous. He had decades of experience (and success) at St Joe’s...the new AD wanted a change and it was a bitter ending for someone who had been very loyal to the school. It was surprising that he took the role of an assistant, but Michigan probably has the resources (like Alabama football) to make it worthwhile for Martelli.

On paper, Martelli as an assistant to Howard makes perfect sense. He has the experience in college basketball (recruiting, scheduling, etc.) that Howard lacked. I’d be surprised if Martelli stays as an assistant much longer. He’s much older and probably could get another meaningful head coaching job.

he's at that age where it would be almost now or never. Turns 67 end of August.

The number of head coaches in D-I that are 10 or more years younger than Howard is greater than the number that are "damn near 30 years older". His post-college career in basketball spans more than half his life. Calling him "young" sounds like a dis.

A dis? Wow, you're really reaching for something here for some reason.

Is this not his first head coaching position? Perhaps I should have said "inexperienced", but I'm sure you'd take that the wrong way as well.

Agree. IMO, it seems like his dismissal from St Joe’s was not how he wants to be remembered. Success as an assistant at Michigan helps, but being a head coach carries different weight. It probably just depends on what opens up and if it has potential. He elevated St Joe’s quickly when he took the reins.

Columbus, Ohio has a lot to offer college students. Ann Arbor, not so much. Very cold in Michigan (although I am sure it gets very cold in Ohio as well), and Ann Arbor is near Detroit, which is about as appealing as Compton, California (basically, inner city Los Angeles).

Ann Arbor is ranked as one of the best places to live in the country.

I’ve seen a magazine where it listed Ann Arbor as the #2 place to live in the US.

It's a lovely place to be sure, but any rankings are suspect. #2 for whom? Retired academics with a penchant for the Northern Midwest? Absolutely. The community, to be so diverse, is still quite sheltered and in its own way homogenous.

There are many college towns like it, some as beautiful and others not. So I could easily seeing it being a #2 spot for retirement life, but necessarily for an optimum place for the years between college and retirement.

I live in such a place, though developers have been trashing it since it made a report like this one. I hope the people of Ann Arbor have the good sense not to let speculators begin to destroy the ambiance of their community the way they have Auburn's.

I didn't mean to say Ann Arbor was bad, but rather Detroit is. Please tell me where anyone has Detroit ranked highly as a place to live, go to college, or even visit!!

Ann Arbor is okay, but not much to do in a college town normally. Detroit has the Lions, the Red Wings, the Pistons, and the Tigers, but the crime rate in the city is very high from what I have heard.
