UAB 3-point shooting
I knew this was one of our poorest shooting teams from 3 but didn't realize just how poor. Since the 3 point shot was added to the college game for the 1986-1987 season, only ONE UAB team has finished a season shooting below 30% from 3: the 1994-95 squad that finished 14-16 shot .293 from there. This years UAB team is now sitting at 29.9% for the season. We are likely below 29% in CUSA games.

29.8% in conference games, which is 13th in the conference. Only ODU is worse.

The bright spot is TSG. A toasty 44% from 3 in CUSA games. Guy is having a very good year, in all phases of his game. Quan is up to a respectable 34.8% in conference games. Strangely, I think his 3 point shooting has improved since he hurt his knee.

I wish AK would give Rotegaard some minutes out at the wing if teams are gonna zone us.

RE: UAB 3-point shooting
At a certain point, it's not even about the shooting percentage anymore. We just need to make some three-pointers to keep the 3PM deficit as low as possible.

- In games where UAB shoots above 30% from three, they're 12-1.
- In games where UAB makes >5 3PM, they're 13-1.
- In games where the opposing team makes >3 3PM than UAB, UAB is 4-3.
- In losses, UAB shoots 22% from three.
- In wins, UAB shoots 32% from three.

Shooting 30% from three and making 5 threes is the bar to clear.

When you can't make threes, the margin for error is much slimmer.

UAB 3-point shooting
I love what the color commentator on the Stadium broadcast 2 weekends ago: “A coach told me there is no such thing as a “long 2”...that’s a “missed 3”

I think priority #1, 2, & 3 for Andy Kennedy this season has been installing his complex defense sets. Went back and watched snips of Ole Miss and, like he’s doing at UAB, the constant swapping - even in the middle of a possession - is about as far from simple as you can get. We’ll get our 20+ wins and maybe the CUSA champs, but I think he’s building the foundation of forcing turnovers and transition buckets. I know I would hate scheming to play a team that’s as complex on D as we already are.

RE: UAB 3-point shooting
This is definitely the worst shooting UAB team that I've watched.

I agree with jthrashr, and posted something similar on another thread without the stats. If we could even shoot a DECENT % from three (say ~35%), make 70+% of our free throws, and continue playing great defense, we would be a very tough out in a tournament.

RE: UAB 3-point shooting
I didn't realize we were this bad, but we're bottom 13 in the country at 5.1 3PM per game. It's even worse if you consider the fast pace that we play.

Our assist numbers are equally brutal.

Strange team. You can see the outline of a great team, but we're stuck at "decent."

Hard to say if HCAK has maximized the talent on this team, or if he made some strategic mistakes. It's both if I had to guess.

I probably wouldn't have made Ertel the starting point guard, but the starting two guard (could make the argument that's the case now). Personally, I'd like to see Lovan and Quan initiating the offense more. Once they are attacking downhill, they can keep it, or if help comes over, then drive-and-kick for easy corner threes for Ertel, TSG, or Jalen.

When your "best" shooters are the ones with the ball in their hands the most, then it's just more difficult to find quality looks above the break.

Also, Toney and Rote should have played a lot more early in the year to see if they'd be ready late into conference play.

Will be interesting to see what changes HCAK makes after the Rust game.

Again, I think HCAK is laying the foundation on the defense. We all know we need more production and better shooting, but once he gets a team running his D system blindfolded...well, if your opponent can’t score over 60 pts and they’re coughing the ball up 15+ times per game they’re gonna struggle as much if not more than us. He’ll get all his weapons in here and let’s see where we go...

My brother texted me during 2nd ODU game: "No chemistry"

Agree about the young players. I thought the short rotation so early in a very weak schedule was kinda odd.

I still think HCAK is using this season to a) start on the defense side and b) find out who wants/will to be on the floor next year. Basically same formula HCBC used only HCAK has to play a schedule in the meantime. If we were AAC this season we’d have a record under .500, but I wouldn’t be pissed. I’m excited with the structure HCAK is installing.

When we miss a 3, it's usually a MONUMENTAL miss. I didn't keep track of air ball 3 point misses against ODU, but there were several. I mean NOT EVEN CLOSE to the basket....Go Blazers

With all due respect, I don’t see where that matters. We’re hitting 3’s or we’re not.. If we are drawing iron it wouldn’t mean we’re just this close to being better.
