Hornets wrap up the regular season at the John with a huge series starting this Thursday against UT Rio Grande Valley (28-21, 19-12 WAC). The Hornets can claim the 2 seed in the WAC Tournament if they can win 3 of 4. The 2 seed gets a day 1 bye in the WACT.

Elsewhere in the WAC, GCU and CBU (not eligible for the WACT) will battle it out for the regular season crown. Seattle and Utah Valley will battle for the remaining WACT seed in which UVU will need a sweep to secure it (not sure on tie-breakers).

Congrats to Sac State! Good luck in the WAC tournament. As for CBU & GCU, that should be a great four game series. I cannot wait until CBU is able to get this four year transition period behind them.

Thanks. I think this year is GCU's to lose. They crushed us in our regular season series.

What's your prediction for the UTRGV series this weekend? We've been weak on the road so I think you're the clear favorite.

Hornets sweep, claim the 2nd seed only to lose in our 1st game in the WACT then tear through the loser bracket only to get bounced by GCU. 05-stirthepot

Edit: On a serious note, both teams look pretty even. UTRGV looks to have better plate discipline and speed on the bases. Pitching numbers are damn near identical with the Hornets getting the edge in less walks given and more K's. Hornets only have the clear advantage in fielding. Should be a close series.

Hornets take the first 3 games of the series to secure the 2 seed. 2 wins were in extra's, both won by Torres' bat.

UTRGV is a tough squad. I think we'll be seeing them on day 2 and it will be a tough one.

CBU clinched a share of the regular season title in baseball today, knocking off GCU 6-1. That is two titles in two seasons, with the 2020 season canceled. They ended up 29-7 in conference and 37-15 overall.

The WAC is going to be a 2 horse race in baseball. Very impressive of CBU to show up and start competing out of the gate.

Of note, ACU would be first in WAC based on RPI and Sam Houston is fourth

Hoping we can all boost each other next year!

RE: 2021 Baseball
The Hornets (34-20, 22-14 WAC) close out the regular season with a series win over UT Rio Grande Valley (29-24, 20-15 WAC) to finish 3rd in the final WAC standings but most importantly secured the 2 seed for the WAC Tournament. The 2 seed gives the Hornets a day 1 bye.

Thursday: 5-4 win. UTRGV gets 3 runs off of Randall in the 7th to tie the game and force extra innings. Both teams score in the 10th and Keith Torres wins the game with a walk off hit in the 11th. Torres went 3 for 5 with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs.

Friday, Game 1: 20-5 win. Hornets win big mainly to a 12 run 6th inning that had a 2 run HR, 3 doubles and a grand slam. Harper got his first win of his career.

Friday, Game 2: 6-5 win. Hornets rally from a 3 run deficit to force extra innings. Smith knocked in the tying run in the 9th. UTRGV scored in the top half of the 10th then Torres came through with a bases loaded single that scored 2 runs to win the game.

Saturday: 2-4 loss. UTRGV rallied in the 6th to tie the game and then tacked on a few more runs late to get a win. Hornets stranded 12 runners in the loss.

The WACT starts Wednesday with the Hornets playing the highest seed that wins on day 1. In all likelihood the Hornets will face UTRGV on Thursday. All games will be on ESPN+ and the WAC Digital Network.

Wasn't sure how the new members fare in baseball. The WAC has been a solid baseball conference with the exception of the RPI anchors in Chi State, UNC, and formerly North Dakota.

I am curious how the WACT will be handled next year with the increase in teams.

Looking at the "New WAC" through yesterday's games, there would be no change for ACU and SHSU at #1 and #4 respectively. Lamar at #6 and SFA at #8 would be in the middle.

SHSU got hurt by the 40 game league schedule. The Kats play a schedule meant to get an at large if they win 40 games and while they would not have won 40, they did lose a few RPI booster contests that they would have in prior years.

I am hoping that with more non league opportunities, that Sam can play an even better schedule in ‘22. We shall see...

As a reminder, our baseball fans are most upset by WAC move. Hoping the league can improve quickly there but ultimately the Sam program isn’t even what it was three years ago. That being said, the schedule is built to make an at large bid if the program wins 40 games. Got to do that

Neither is the ACU program, thankfully. The Wildcats were in last place three years ago. With A new coach (SLC CoAch of the year) a young team
(Only three seniors) coupled with a 34-19 record and regular season SLC championship, we are looking forward to the move to the WAC.

UTRGV gets its first WACT win with a walk-off 3 run HR to beat UVU 5-4. Big win. The 3 seed magic lives on.

Looks like GCU may need to go through both NMSU and Sac State to get the NCAA automatic bid. In years past, this always seemed to be the case as well with GCU never quite getting the job done. Perhaps, like basketball, this will be the year.
Looking forward to watching the games.

I think this is GCU’s year to lose and IMO are quite a bit stronger than GCU teams of the past. The starting pitching duo of Ohl and Young should be enough to carry the Lopes into the WACT title game.
