The Hornets (31-19, 19-13 WAC) take 3 of 4 against San Francisco (21-25, 15-9 WCC) and in the process have secured their 9th consecutive (complete) season of 30 or more wins. Hornets are the only D1 program in CA with such a streak.
Friday:
2-1 win. Both Hornets runs were unearned. Doyle scored Torres in the top of the 8th for the lead as Randall, Rodriguez, and Zalasky combine for 1 earned run on 5 hits with 13 K’s and only 1 walk.
Saturday, Game 1:
7-6 win. Hornets rally from an early 5 run deficit. A Bacho 3 run HR in the 5th tied it and a bloop double by Doyle in the 6th gave the Hornets the lead. USF tied the game on a blown runners interference call that forced a bottom 7th where the pinch hitting Denholm walked it off with an RBI single down the 3rd base line.
Saturday, Game 2:
0-8 loss. One hit. That’s all we got. One *** **** hit.
Sunday:
4-0 win. Saul has his best outing of his career and throws 8 inning of shutout ball with 6 K’s and only allowing 4 hits. Smith had a solo HR in the 3rd and a McPhillips double in the 8th added a couple of insurance runs.
Hornets wrap up the regular season at the John with a huge series starting this Thursday against UT Rio Grande Valley (28-21, 19-12 WAC). The Hornets can claim the 2 seed in the WAC Tournament if they can win 3 of 4. The 2 seed gets a day 1 bye in the WACT.
Elsewhere in the WAC, GCU and CBU (not eligible for the WACT) will battle it out for the regular season crown. Seattle and Utah Valley will battle for the remaining WACT seed in which UVU will need a sweep to secure it (not sure on tie-breakers).
