The Birmingham Barons of the Double-A South league just doesn't have the same ring to it.

The way MLB has crapped on the minor leagues is flat horrible. They dumped teams that towns had supported for many decades, boom! Done.

Been to some Keys games, awesome to hear they are still swinging after the minor league realignment. Great town and stadium.

This might be the stupidest thing I've ever seen from baseball management. And that's saying a lot, as we all know.

Why must the league have a new more generic name? This whole deal seems to be bad to me, but I’m glad state teams made it through.
Was there not a team in Mobile anymore? What happened to the Baybears?

From what I read, that's just a placeholder. Final league names haven't been determined yet. One would hope that, considering it's the same teams that comprised the Southern League, they'd call it the Southern League. But I'm sure they won't.

RE: Trash Pandas, Barons, Biscuits join revamped minor league baseball system
Nothing said "minor league" like attending a game in the Nashville Vols home field called "Sulfur Dell". The outfielders stood in niches cut into the rising outfield slopes.
As far as I know, the B'ham Barons have always been a AA team playing in the Southern League. We have been a farm team of the Red Sox, Yankees, Athletics (while they were owned by B'ham native Charlie Findley) and the White Sox (who sent Michael Jordan to play here). Have I forgotten any others? The Southern League of my youth was composed of the B'ham Barons, Nashville Vols, Atlanta Crackers, Mobile Bears, New Orleans Pelicans, Little Rock Travelers, Chattanooga Lookouts and the Memphis Chicks. A post season "Dixie Series" was played with the winner of the Texas League each year. Eddie Glennon owned the Barons and "Zip" Newman wrote daily news articles about the team under his byline "From the Roof"(the press box at Rickwood Park was on the roof behind home plate.) Rickwood Park is about 10 years older than the Red Sox home field Fenway Park - the oldest major league park.

The Tigers, when the 1983 Barons ran away with the Southern League and a large part of that team went on to win the 1984 World Series as the Detroit Tigers.

RE: Trash Pandas, Barons, Biscuits join revamped minor league baseball system
Opening Day set for minor league baseball in Alabama, report says
https://www.al.com/news/2021/02/opening-...-says.html
The minor league schedule format will also have a dramatically different look, according to The Athletic. Teams will play six-game series with an off day each week. That’s designed to minimize travel made more cumbersome by the virus.
The Barons, Biscuits and Trash Pandas will also play fewer games this season. The Athletic reported that all levels, except for Triple-A, will play 120 games. That’s 20 less games than in a normal season.

It was, unfortunately, long overdue. Not every team had the convenience like Atlanta has of Gwinnet & Rome right outside the front doors. And once they rearranged geographically, as best they could, MLB and the MLBPA had changes they've needed to make for a long while. It sucks for some towns, but makes sense if you step back and look at the map and the new structure.

This was a money grab. MLB wanted the merchandising rights etc.
