They had a game @Oregon scheduled in the fall.

As for long distance games, Betune-Cookman travels to UTEP in September.

Does that game for NMSU count as a 2020 game? Can they use players who may have joined the team or became eligible in the spring semester?

Not sure if it counts for 2020 but since NMSU didn't play this past fall, this spring is their season. They had 3 games scheduled, 2 vs fcs and 1 vs div2. The div 2 game has been cancelled by NM Highlands since they won't be playing football after all this spring.

NMSU's coach says he won't be playing starters so lots of inexperienced players will be getting some game time reps.

RE: FBS vs FCS games in 2021
Here’s the deal. Since CFB does not have an exhibition game(s), coaches like to schedule these games to work iron things out, see guys taking live snaps, building depth, etc. Also, in some of these cases a local FCS opponent will draw more fans than an FBS team. UConn is bringing in Yale, I am guessing that will attract more residents of Connecticut than say, Georgia State.

I'd buy that except in the case of Alabama their FCS crap is usually in November. This year is an exception but they're playing New Mexico State in November which isn't much better and Florida's playing Samford that day. Wouldn't Alabama at Florida be better on November 13 when both teams are 9-0 then on September 18? And I'm pretty sure Samford isn't in Florida.

North Dakota State > South Carolina State

You get more points by playing NDSU than SCSU.

Yet North Dakota State doesn't have an FBS opponent. I wonder if that's the Bison's choice or if no FBS team wants to play them. Sure seems like they would be a better FCS opponent for Nebraska than SE Louisiana State.

No one wants to play them. No one schedules their FCS game with the intent of finding the hardest possible one to boost their SOS. The whole point is that it should be an easyish win and you can get your depth some experience while counting towards bowl eligibility. For the AP and CFP beating an FCS team means nothing, heck even though NDSU is better than most FBS teams i dont think theyre gonna positively affect votes. But if you lose it puts a huge black eye on your season. All that said, they have 2 P5 games over the next 5 years or so. Colorado and I think Arizona. Theyre gonna learn the hard way that there is no benefit to scheduling NDSU a la Kansas State, Minnesota and others.

You are absolutely correct... NDSU tries to schedule one FBS game per year... but that hasn't happened since 2016, and won't happen until 2022 vs Arizona. It's not a financial thing for NDSU, their ticket revs are higher than most G5s... but the fan base loves to travel to new venues. But I get it... When a FBS team schedules the Bison, the FBS team needs to know it's NDSU's "Superbowl" -- they plan on winning -- not coming in to collect a paycheck... so the Risk vs Reward of playing the Bison isn't worth it for an FBS team.

Curious when Oregon is going to reschedule the NDSU game... hasn't happened yet. Wonder what the hold up is?

But it Clemson’s case they don’t need it. Clemson gains nothing out of playing NDSU. Think McFly.

That is the point. If you beat North Dakota State? You get more votes and get higher up in the standings by the football playoffs committee than a team like La.-Monore or a terrible MAC team. That is why Minnesota schedule them.

Do you? Ohio State got a lot of votes in 2017 by beating Oklahoma and Alabama lost a lot of votes by playing FCS crap. Oh wait.. When I see an SEC team get penalized for playing FCS crap I'll believe SOS matters.

No. No you dont.

So Minnesota scheduled them to get beat by them to get more votes? Got it 03-lmfao

The problem is that NDSU will not gain an ounce of legitimacy until they move up and play an fbs schedule.

Nope. Sagarin's rankings say that NDSU has been consistently better than more than two-thirds of FBS teams.

2015 season: NDSU was #36 in final Sagarin ranking of combined FBS and FCS teams

2016: #44

2017: #31

2018: #19

2019: #31

ACC schools periodically play Southern Conference or Colonial Conference schools for the likely easier win, plus the politics associated with a game that includes "feeder" kids into your graduate programs or overlapping Trustees. Richmond, Furman, and Bill & Mary are prime examples of this. JMU, Delaware, Citadel, etc., also fit this mold.

In case you missed it, my alma matter NMSU was destroyed today by Tarleton. 7-40. Ouch! It is going to be a long two game spring season.

How pitiful is NMSU to get blown out by an FCS team that was Div. 2 last year?

From what I understand, they had around 60 scholarship players, so it is really possible that Tarleton had more scholarship players on the field. There are rumors that the coach has lost the team, but he did coach the team to a winning record, and won a bowl game. I think this is going to be a really long 2 game spring season, and a really long fall season.
