RE: Spring Football- Jonesing
I always hate when an old coach's kids get processed out, but I love Hammock's recruiting and dev approach. Making this much easier...

Perhaps. But some coaches don’t get the same result. I assume every coach wants to grow his guys - Hammock is able to do so while showing that if you work hard you see the field. Stars, offers, none of that matter.
Plus I don’t recall this kind of growth under Rod. But maybe Rod didn’t need kids to transform in 1 or 2 years as I don’t recall a ton of freshman getting PT under him.

Even those who played early on the OL were not huge for their frames. Scharping was 320 but 6'6"

Seems like Carey was/is old school in his approach. In regards to who plays but also in recruiting the best player regardless of size. Hammock may be more - I’ll recruit the size then make him the best player.

Squirrel bsome truth in that last comment. Recruiting athletes and developing. That is how most P5 recruit. You see a lot of great athletes not be able because they just can't pick it up. The. WR Robinson probably fits that profile best. Have to take a shot on that size and hope his ability catches up, sometimes it does and many times it does not.

Coach Agpalsa posted this today. It's four of last year's O-line starters plus JJ Lippe. Meaningful? I'm jonesing for spring, clutching for anything.

I would read in to that. Why not. Champe got passed - could be that the staff sees on opportunity to redshirt guys.

Most teams have 7 or 8 lineman that play in a semirotstion. The most important thing is to play as a unit

Hope Cox gets beat out. First reason means we have someone better and second we need to get better and more competitive in the OLine. I'm not saying Cox is not decent because he is, we need better.

I believe he was only a soph rs last year. And he will be again this year because of the NCAA COVID exemption rule. He didn't look great and I was probably his biggest critic.
However the great thing about our team is, we are young at every position. With that being said, no one on our team is even close to what their true potential is.

I always thought Cox looked awkward at tackle. Thought maybe a move to guard would fix some things. I also feel like he has a ton of talent and can figure it out at tackle. Last season was weird - I am willing to give him more time out there. If he shows improvement even better

I agree that the most successful teams rotate defensive linemen and by keeping them fresh they have a superior pass rush and they avoid getting worn down. However my impression (and I could be wrong) is that the most successful teams do not rotate on the O line other than exceptions for special teams where you have some specialists such as a long snapper and the ability to mix in some young guys and back ups for some playing time as should they be needed.

Per hammocks Twitter: Devin Lafayette is doing some big time squats AND Cyrus McGarrell continues to impress coaches.
With how bad our corners were it would be no surprise to me to see him playing a lot this season.

Lafayette is going to be fantastic. He's only adding explosion.

Raieshein Thomas & Ester both did 500lbs + squats.
Seems like some real nice gains out of everyone.

Today he set the safety back squat record at 463 lbs. x 4! Per coach Jackson. Hammock says 465 lbs.

He's one of those players, along with Rudolph on offense, that without hesitation you can get excited to see them star for years to come. No worry at all about a drop-off

RE: Spring Football- Jonesing
I remember PJs second year at WMU, he was featured in a Yahoo news article for a strong focus on bulking up his players following his first year on campus. The gains his kids saw were very similar to what Hammock is seeing today.
Now, I could only imagine that this was something Hammock wanted to implement in 2020 if it weren't for the strict COVID rules. As things are starting to relax more and open up, it seems like he's getting a chance to push a robust off-season program. Let's see what that looks like on the field in 2021! Hopefully back to Detroit!

What I've learned is that the strength coach can be the 2nd most valuable coach. Due to ncaa rules he may be able to spend more time with team than any other coach. In many cases they are paid accordingly. ( I have no idea if we even have 1. Just never paid attention I guess.)

What's wild is that Earl set the record just before him...at like 25lbs less. But good for Earl.
That other spot is wide open, I always though Earl was steady. Not great, not bad, but when he got PT he didn't have a ton of mistakes.
