Drip drip drip keeps the pressure from building in pipes and keeps them from busting. The ice doesn't break the pipe, the pressure created in the unfrozen water from the ice does.

I’ve had a pipe burst that was going drip drip drip.

Yes I did and it was quite expensive. There is a difference in construction of homes built in the Deep South in areas with limited or virtually nonexistent building codes.
