https://gohuskies.com/news/2021/2/17/bas...pdate.aspx

Quote:Due to the ongoing inclement weather in Texas, the University of Washington baseball team has canceled its opening weekend trip to Houston, where it was scheduled to play Houston Baptist, Rice and Little Rock.

The Huskies will now travel to California to take on UC Irvine in a three-game series. All three games are slated for a 1:00 p.m. PST start, taking place on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.*

How did Irvine happen to have the weekend open?

I believe they had a COVID-19 related cancelation at the last minute.

Yep. The Anteaters' original opening weekend opponent, Fresno State, postponed several games at "the beginning of its 2021 schedule due to COVID-19 contact tracing within the baseball program."

So Little Rock isn't coming either. Is there any chance we can just play HBU 2 (or even 3) games this weekend instead?

Houston vs Texas Southern canceled their Friday game. They'll provide an update later about the other games this weekend. Maybe the four schools can work something out for the rest of the weekend?

How about, UH hosts TSU Saturday and HBU Sunday. Rice reverses it. Make both games Uri (Winter Storm Uri) relief efforts and fans are encouraged to donate much needed supplies?

Actually we should try to play Houston Sunday instead now that I think of it.

If I had to guess I'd say we end up playing either a 2 or 3-game series against HBU. UH snubbed us in scheduling during the regular season (for the first time in decades). Why would they now decide to play us?

RE: Washington Huskies' baseball team cancels trip to Houston
My understanding is that Rice has adopted COVID-19 protocols for all sports. This policy was apparently not adopted by the Athletic Department but by the crisis management services on campus.

Part of the football protocol was a requirement that each player be tested three times during the week of a game. That is an expensive proposition (and probably follows the Big 12 requirements). It is my understanding that UH declined to agree to the tests hence no games with UH. I assume since they haven't been testing it is impossible to pick up a game with them this weekend (or any time this season).

It is also my understanding that HBU intended to test the required number of times but the testing labs were closed in Houston on Tuesday and Wednesday due to the weather, hence there may be problems there although I think those may be resolved with a little flexibility from Rice based on the situation.
