Harvey opts out
Rumors are true. Looks like he could be gone for good. Essentially another lost scholarship this season.

Brannen basically has to strike gold in the transfer free agent market. I think he knows this. I believe the emphasis will be on transfers with multiple years which would then lock them into the program.

I said earlier that you can’t build your team from incoming freshman anymore due to the free agent transfer rules. You need a couple of core guys and then hit the portal every spring.

Brannen is going to have chance his philosophy or he is going get inconsistent results. You just can’t hope that guys stay three or four years under your system. I believe the right way to win is get the best roster possible and come up with a system based on your talent.

This spring is going to be telling whether this staff has adjusted. My core for UC includes DD, Davenport, and MAW. I would like to see Mason be part of that core. I don’t trust that Eason will stay or buy into the program to be part of that group. I would like to see Vogt and Dou return too.

If Eason also leaves then Brannen better secure a monster 2022 class or he is as good as gone.

Needs a monster 2021 spring transfer class. 2022is either going to be a new coach if spring 2021 fails or building off a great transfer class. You don’t get to 2022 without bringing in a bunch of high end transfer.

I real concerned about the number of players that have quit under this staff. I am not talking guys that left before year one, I am talking about guys that have left during the year.

RE: Harvey opts out
So as not to create multiple threads/split thread - here is a quote from the link posted in the basketball season thread...

Quote:The best stretch of Harvey’s season came before the Bearcats went into a COVID shutdown during the month of January when he went on a four game stretch 13.8 points and 2.5 rebounds per game.

Since Cincinnati returned to action, Harvey has seen his minutes decline, and now it appears that his season has come to an end. The month shutdown and the COVID outbreak are said to have had a major impact on Harvey and his decision.

Everything I've seen regarding Eason indicates he's staying.

In his two classes, Brannen's gotten four 5th-year guys (Jaevin, McNeal, Sorolla, and Rap) and two junior-year transfers (DDJ and Vogt).

It's hard to blame him. He was criminally underutilized compared to other players despite being one of our most efficient scorers.

Going to have to add a bunch of transfers again this spring. Not ideal. Hope everyone else stays or next year could be a really long year again

I will say that Harvey's limited playing time in several games this season was pretty curious. Hope he comes back. Crazy year.

Keep giving Davenport 30 minutes when he played like hot garbage on Sunday and that unfortunately could change.

If Vogt and KW leave after this season...our roster looks fun...

Mika Adams Woods
David DeJulius
Mason Madsen
Dou Diarra
Tari Eason (for now)
Jeremiah Davenport
Mike Saunders

So...yeah...guess we'll be looking for a new coach in 2022.

RE: Harvey opts out
I’ve mostly been a Brannen apologist, and not for any reason other than patience. I just think a new coach deserves a chance, especially under less than ideal circumstances. But this is a really bad look. I thought that Harvey was one of the three most important players on our roster going forward. I don’t want to make any sweeping overreactions. But this is a big loss, and a really bad sign potentially.

Not a huge Brannen fan. But timing has been awful for him. Unfortunately we are on a complete rebuild. We’re 5 years out from seeing the NCAA regardless of coach at this point. As I’ve been saying, the BB program is dead man walking in Clifton.

I’d fully expect Gabe back. I remember their local news doing stories on how socially active he was in the community. I can see how the gym/dorm lockdown during a Covid season can wear on you mentally.

I feel bad for DeJulius. Left one of the best teams in the country to finish out his final years likely losing a lot of games.

Wish I could say this was surprising but it felt like an even money bet that he would hit the portal this spring. Heading into year 3 is likely going to be rinse and repeat.

RE: Harvey opts out
not making excuses but I expect a lot of teams are going to see a high number of quality players leave due to covid and the new free agent rules. The key is getting three or four key pieces in the process. This is new era of college basketball for many programs who were used to building with four year guys.

Harvey wax never on my list of core guys. You need three to four buy in and be program guys to me first guys. Then you find your transfers and go from there. I am more concerned with the transfer misses than I am with young guys upset about PT.

I tend to agree with you on both points. As it relates to Harvey, he's never seemed consistently really comfortable out there in stretches. It's not unusual for new guy, KW is an example as he played limited minutes as a frosh as well and looked lost at times. I've kind of been guarded about ZH and his fit here given he's had the injury issues in both years, and lately the covid deal. However, absent guys just not able to withstand the quarantine issues, i don't see any upside to leaving a team before season's end if you're really interested in improving. He's played quite a few minutes since the middle of December, and he's had some good moments but i don't know that he's shown enough that his playing time should be that much more particularly with them now winning. He may just be worn out from two years of injury and the covid. However, when you have a free eligibility year, it would seem best to keep practicing and playing. He played 11 minutes Sunday and picked up two fouls and didn't seem very lethal offensively with a lot of dribbling. I wouldn't describe his minutes as stellar. I wish him well.

Disagree with the 5 years regardless of coach. With essentially FA now in college basketball you can definitely build a tournament roster in one offseason. The problem is this staff hasn’t exactly identified the right type of players and made the most of the transfer market. Continually bringing in slow, stiff bigs makes no sense when you want to play fast. Guards still dominate the game. If they can somehow get an impact guard to pair with DeJulius and a rim defending/rebounder I’d give them a shot next year.
