RE: If you could pick...
Knowing what we know now, it seems a little silly to not just go with the obvious choice of Travis Kelce and throw it to him 20 times a game. With how good Whyle is or has been, he's not a 3x first team all pro, 2x second team all pro, 6 time probowler with 3 different NFL records. Can you imagine Kelce running on the same field as LB's from ECU or Tulane? He'd go for 200 yards a game.

I mean...to be fair, Kelce wasn't even close to being that in college either.

Travis Kelce-
Junior Year: 13 receptions, 150 yards and 2 TDs
Senior Year: 45 receptions, 722 yards and 8 TDs (one of those receptions went for 86 yards in the Belk Bowls so do with them what you will

Josh Whyle (one full season at TE so far splitting with two other guys)-
Sophomore Year: 28 receptions, 353 yards and 6 TDs

Not saying he's going to be Travis Kelce...but he is a comparable college player with a high ceiling. In fact, I think TE and DL rooms are the most talented top to bottom on the team and it isn't close (yes, even with Coby and Sauce in the CBs room).

RE: If you could pick...
The problem I have with the obvious picks of either Travis Kelce or Mardy Gilyard is that you have to have a QB who can consistently make the reads and then place the ball where they can catch it. Mardy could go "get the ball," but even he would struggle with the throws that Des Ridder typically makes. Yeah, you could "hit" Kelce over the middle all day long, but the question is whether or not Des is making that assessment and then putting the ball where Kelce can get it and run afterwards.

And...NO...I'm not trying to reignite the whole QB controversy. I'm just saying that, looking ahead to 2021, the glaring issue I see is not "who can we throw the ball to." We have a good TE and a couple of hot WR's. The question is, can the QB read the coverage accurately and get the ball into the hands of the WR's and TE? I love Mardy and Travis and Armon (Binns). I'm just not sure that adding "one" of those guys would radically reshape the results at this moment.

I think we saw an entirely different Des when Hudson joined the O line in Birmingham and set the stage for an impressive win against BC and an undefeated 2020. So while he has some limitations to his game, I think we'd see some amazing statistics from Mardy or Travis as Ridder's go to receiver with an effective offensive line.

I'm the biggest Des Ridder hater going, but some were projecting him as a 2nd round draft pick. He's not going to be an air raid specialist, but he's not the biggest hole. Remember, as of now, Metz is the Left Tackle. Hudson is the pick.

Tackle is certainly the biggest question mark. Both Left and Right Tackle will have new starters and the we will have the question of depth. It appears for now LT will be transfer James Tunstall and RT will be John Williams. Neither have started at the FBS level and Williams will be a RS Freshman. Behind them we have Metz and someone yet not decided. The pecking order is all going to have to be figured out in Spring Ball and probably later at Higher Ground.

Ridder is a running QB. I wish I could count him as a "Dual Threat," but frankly we have not seen a marked improvement in his throws over the past two seasons. The Offense really would improve if they made him a "run first--pass second" type QB. He should be looking to either run or option it off every play and then looking to throw only if something ridiculous is open or as a last resort.

And that's not a terrible thing. Let Des be Des. He has shown that he can break plays with his legs more than with his arm. That's not a tragedy...unless you keep trying to make him into a thrower.

RE: If you could pick...
No offense Jerry but did you watch the Bearcats this past fall after the third game? Ridder made tremendous strides as a passer, increasing his passing percentage from 55% in 2019 to 66.2% in 2020. His TD to INT ratio was 19:6. I'll give you his deep ball needs work still, but he was pretty much automatic on passing plays within 15 yards of scrimmage. Barring injury, Ridder is going to finish his UC playing career either 1st or 2nd in most QB statistics as a Bearcat.

We're not Army or Navy running the triple option. He's perfectly fine as a college passer especially when you include his legs into the equation. He'd start for probably 95% of college teams. I wish he was a little more accurate but its not like we're running an 8th grade wishbone offense or something. He makes plenty of throws especially to TE's.

I wasn't going to post on this but Ridder will never be enough for some folks on here. It's like the Mick vs anti-Mick contingent though not as bad. It is what it is. This kid right now has 1,800 career rushing yards with 22 TDs; 7,000 career passing yards with 57 TD passes against 20 interceptions. He came back for one more season to work on his craft and to improve his NFL Draft stock. He's been a huge part of his team's 31-6 record over the past three seasons. Oh, don't be surprised if he gets some Heisman buzz this season too. But, he just can't be perfect man.

RE: If you could pick...
By-the-bye... This is what these boards are the best at, IMO: discussing various aspects of the game. I know Desmond Ritter is our QB going into the next season and I'm good with that. It's a part of being a fan, to wonder "what if." There's no need to escalate this beyond the pure fantasy of "what if" we could have Travis Kelce catching the ball or "what if" this defense could have been anchored by Conner Barwin?

Not to mention we get to dig around in names who don't get mentioned much anymore...

Back to your regularly scheduled program.

I love Mardy Gilyard. He is possibly my favorite Bearcat of all time, and any time he touched the ball he could make magic happen, but If I were to pick someone this team needs right now...It is Chris Moore.

I think Moore is the best deep threat we have ever had, and had he played under a different coach he likely would have broken records. I don't think the AAC, or even Georgia would have been able to contain Moore.

The problem with a deep threat receiver is that our QB is not a deep threat thrower. We need receivers with a knack for getting open on 15 yard and under routes, and who are good blockers for when the QB takes off running.

In other words...Dominick Goodman, the other half of that receiving threat.

Yep, this thread has been an interesting and very collegial conversation which I think all of us enjoy. I know there have certainly cringeworthy moments with Des, as with any player I suppose, but 2020 was very special for Ridder and the entire team. And I know there is talent in the pipeline at QB, though it's largely unproven in FBS competition at this point.

But in the years to come many will likely join a growing chorus on this board wishing for the "good old days" when Ridder played QB and we came to expect him to go left, elude all defenders, rush for a dozen yards and walk into the end zone all alone, game after game.

This is probably true.

As Joni Mitchell once sang: "Don't it always seem to go, you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone... They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

And, if in five years, we have a similar thread to this one and people answer "Des Ridder" then all the better because that means his time at UC was good.

Des has been a lightning rod on here and I've been a big critic of his but he's the conference player of the year now. For the purposes of this topic my choice of Greg Cook had nothing to do with a criticism of Des. Greg Cook was the #1 pick in the draft and plays the most important position on the field. The argument I can agree with in this thread is taking a LT because they see that as a potential hole. I believe Tunstall will be solid there. Assuming we're solid on the OL I think taking a guy who Bill Walsh identified as one of the most talented QBs he's had and a Guy who Bob Trumphy said would have won him a bunch of SB rings if he'd been healthy would be the biggest impact on the team, even with the guy he'd hypothetically be replacing being the POY.
