Evan Prater 4* 6-4 192 was his rank real or based on playing teams like Deer Park? RS FR since under under 5 games in 2020
Jack Perry 6-0 200 JC Transfer JR
Michael Lindauer 6-3 200 was 3* RS SO
Brady Lichtenberg 6-1 185 was 3* FR

I really wish Bryant had stayed, but don't blame him at all for leaving. Lindauer was 3rd string last year, right? I'm guessing he's the most ready to step in if needed right this minute, but hopefully Prater and Lichtenberg will have good off seasons and show themselves as viable options. I've heard Lichtenberg is a legit FBS QB prospect and didn't come to Cincinnati to hold a clipboard for 4 years, so I expect a very competitive battle for the backup role in 2021.

Lichtenberg is the best pure passing prospect we've had come to UC IMO...I think he will give Prater everything he can handle and then some (see another Ridder/Bryant situation there)...but Lindauer is probably the backup this year if I had to guess.

Prater gets a covid year for 2020, so he still has his RS. Hopefully he can use the RS year this year as the non-playing #2.

This speaks volumes, and I know that you've expressed that you think he's criminally underrated. Curious - what was the reason for lack of Big Ten offers? Early commit to UC? Height? COVID?

UC was extremely fortunate to keep a QB healthy all season but what are the odds that a backup won't be called into action at some critical time this coming season for any number of reasons? I've heard good reports on Lindauer from a friend who is well versed in IN high school football circles but it's always curious to see which players can transition successfully to the bigger stage of high major FBS.

No idea...schools sniffed around him a ton, but he just pulled the trigger early and I think he was settled with his decision when he did. Height isn't a problem, he's 6'2" now and is a solid athlete (was an all-TRAC basketball player too last year). He just makes every throw on the field very well and has been essentially a 4-year starter for a solid team in a complex offense. Only rub I have is that he was throwing to studs all 4 years (every receiver in his career has also gone FBS) so he may have had a sense of comfort knowing there would be open guys on every play.

I certainly won’t complain about having a wealth of quarterback prospects, but it’s a shame that somebody in the quarterback room now is going to get pushed out at some point. It’s the one position where only one player can see the field regularly. Still bums me out that Bryant transferred out, but it’s better to have that happen than to not have depth.

RE: Who is backup QB with Bryant gone?
Just watched some of Lichtenberg‘s tape. Great arm. Can throw on the move. Moves well in the pocket so even though he’s not a burner he can get yards on the ground when the D drops deep. Holds the ball a little low when he moves, but that’s an easy fix. Appears to be a gunslinger, so he may struggle with INTs when he steps up in competition.
He’s got some good tape. It looks like he could really play at this level in a year or two.

RE: Who is backup QB with Bryant gone?
If you want to see why I'm so excited about him (and I had to coach against him for 4 years, so he's not somebody I'm just pumping for fun), check out the throws at 0:12 (finding a seam spot over a LB), 1:10 (hitting a corner against Cover-2 is an incredibly tough throw to make), 2:23 (the arm strength to hit a field out is there), 4:54 (throwing to a spot only your receiver can grab a ball), and just throughout his tape you see his pocket presence and ability to keep his eyes downfield and is fairly accurate for a high schooler going both right and left. He will give Denbrock/Guidugli a ton to play around with, as would Ben Bryant have. It just depends on how they view his strengths vs. Prater's athleticism, because I don't think it's all that close from an arm perspective.

I really do think he'll be someone a lot of Big Ten schools are wondering why they didn't take a look at.

The Prater/Lichtenberg competition is going to be Ridder/Bryant all over again. Does the staff go with the gunslinger over the dual threat guy this time around? That’s to be seen. I think an overlooked aspect, and what will ultimately decide this contest, is which of the two have the locker room. I’ve read and heard that Ridder was a leader in the locker room even as a freshman. Guys just gravitated towards him and he had the gravitas to be a leader.

Yeah, the locker room aspect is huge. The guys cheered hard for Ben Bryant when he played, but Des has always commanded the respect of the entire locker room. Both Prater and Lichtenberg have the tools (albeit different types of tools) to be really good quarterbacks. It might come down to which one wins the locker room over and progresses the most as a result of putting the work in.
