Interesting(to me at least) move today by the Braves.
They signed Jake Lamb. Former All-Star and plays decent defense at 3rd base. He's been hurt in recent years, but he's only 30.
If he can regain a decent bat then that would be a nice DH/3B option.

If Lamb hits as well as he did for the A's, then he's a solid addition.

RE: MLB 2021 Thread
Quote:Seattle Mariners president and CEO Kevin Mather resigned Monday after comments he made to a Rotary Club earlier this month surfaced and received widespread backlash Sunday.
Mariners chairman and managing partner John Stanton said in a statement Monday that he "was extremely disappointed" when he learned of Mather's comments, which were made to a Bellevue, Washington, Rotary Club on Feb. 5 and were posted online over the weekend.
"His comments were inappropriate and do not represent our organization's feelings about our players, staff, and fans," Stanton said. "There is no excuse for what was said, and I won't try to make one. I offer my sincere apology on behalf of the club and my partners to our players and fans. We must be, and do, better. We have a lot of work to do to make amends, and that work is already underway."

Pujols wife announces he's retiring after the season. Surefire 1st ballot HOF.
Will finish with 662+ HR #5 in MLB history
3236+ H- right now #15 and could move up with only 50 hits to #12 and only 84 hits to #10.
2100+ RBI- #3 all time behind only Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth

HOF absolutely. Surefire? I guess, but something nags at me that this guy's candidacy should take a hit for the absolute garbage his last 8 seasons have been (and surely this year will be). His STL numbers, whether you go traditional or advanced metrics, are indisputably great but with the exception of his first season in Anaheim, his presence in the Angels lineup has made the team worse every year. Both because he couldn't play at replacement level AND because his salary meant the team couldn't afford* to bring in talent.
* Yes, I understand Uncle Arte could obviously afford to bring in talent, but in the context of how most MLB teams are run that was never going to happen with Pujols' albatross of a contract hanging on their necks.

Really it's only the last 5 years. 2013 he had the heel injury. 2014-2015 he had fWAR of 2.7 and 1.6
He'll be a 1st ballot guy and he'll get well over 95% of the vote. Ken Griffey Jr the last 9 years had a 1.9 fWAR. Pujols last 8 years has had a 2.6 fWAR. Jr got 99.3% of the votes. Pujols will be absolutely the same.

OK, saying he has been below replacement level only (ha!) applies to the last 5-6 years (2021 included). I overstated it a little but still, he's had two years above average WAR for the Angels and one of those just barely. Assuming this season follows the trend (that's a lock), 80% of his time wearing a halo (and by extension 40% of his career) he will have made his team worse for his presence. By no means should it hold him out of the HOF. In fact, in some ways it really shines a spotlight on how remarkable his first 10 years were. But if I have a HOF vote I at least consider whether he gets my vote in his first year of eligibility.

Well how about this...
And Griffey was at 99.3% of the vote. Pujols is just an absolute 1st ballot lock..
Hopefully Mike Trout will age better than both of these guys.

Pujols will be voted into the HOF on the first ballot. Consider another player who was great in his 20s and early 30s, who then signed as a free agent with the Angels and played several years there, but wasn't so great after his first year in Anaheim. He was voted in on the first ballot.

RE: MLB 2021 Thread
This is probably one post too many but I'll sum it up briefly: I have no doubt Pujols belongs in the HOF and I'm equally certain he WILL be a first ballot guy. If you look at WAR/WAR7/Peak WAR/JAWS the only 1B ranked higher is DiMaggio! But if it is up to me, and thankfully it is not, I strongly consider penalizing him *a little* for being absolute garbage for a huge portion of his career.
Full disclosure: I hated Reggie (I'm a Dodgers fan - of COURSE I hated him) but yeah I would have thought the same thing for him. He was garbage in Anaheim too.

like I said- it'd be great if Trout didn't do like Pujols or Griffey- and actually was able to complete the career and not have the bad stuff the last 8-9 years.

Ridiculous.
Either you didn't read what I wrote or you don't believe what I wrote and are trying to infer something, because I was very clear. From my previous email: "I have no doubt Pujols belongs in the HOF and I'm equally certain he WILL be a first ballot guy. If you look at WAR/WAR7/Peak WAR/JAWS the only 1B ranked higher is DiMaggio!"
In what way is that questioning his credentials?
"But if it is up to me, and thankfully it is not, I strongly consider penalizing him *a little* for being absolute garbage for a huge portion of his career."
"But if I have a HOF vote I at least consider whether he gets my vote in his first year of eligibility."
This doesn't mean I don't want him in, or that I think his stats haven't earned it. It means that if I was a voter I'd consider waiting until his second year of eligibility to give him my vote. I know that sounds petty and esoteric but getting in on the first ballot means something, and the more votes the more meaningful. I think Pujols MIGHT deserve a little penalty (like having to wait one year, or getting a few less votes even while getting in his first year) because of his dreadful performance for very close to 1/2 of his career.

Ehhhh. Eddie Murray was voted in on the first ballot. Pujols is far more deserving of that honor-that-isn't-really-an-honor than Murray was.
