Coach Brady and Coach Byington
I was thinking this morning there are a lot of similarities in the first year of both coaches.
Both inherited a top CAA player. Matt had a senior JYD, and Mark has senior Matt Lewis. JYD missed a lot of his CAA senior year - hopefully not the case for Matt Lewis.
Each brought in 3 quality freshman.
Brady brought in:
Devon Moore
Julius Wells
Andrey Semenov
Mark brought in:
Justin Amadi
Terrence Edwards
Terell Strickland
Anyone want to give an opinion on the better trio? That's a tough one, but I might lean to Brady's trio. Any of Brady's trio could of been ROY in a much better CAA.
One big difference is Matt Brady's first year had VCU, GMU, and GMU finishing 1-3 in a much better CAA.
Each has/had some key transfers.
Interesting the similarities on the items above.
That said, it appears to me Mark is the better coach, and hopefully better relates to his players. I also think Matt inherited a "little" more over all. Swanston, Dazz and Pierre. Jalloh was hurt most of his senior season. I think a hand injury.
I think if each coach's first team at JMU played each other it would be a hell of a game, although if JYD was healthy, he'd dominate on the blocks.

RE: Coach Brady and Coach Byington
So out of Amadi, Strickland, and Edwards, who is staying for 7 years?
I would say that there are a lot of differences in the play. But the one thing that is similar is the excitement from fans. We have wanted a winner for decades and we it appears we are finally on the right track. Here's to hoping the good times continue to roll.

I'll settle for all three playing 5 years each.

I'd have to hear a post game interview with Byington! Brady was terrible and threw his players under the bus all the time.

Coach By is very even keeled and is complimentary of his players. All about the team and more about we need to continue to get better as a whole.

He does not seem like that type of coach. I guess it will be easier to tell once they have some meaningful losses, which has not really happened for him so far at JMU. At the time Morgan St and Norfolk St did not feel painful. Now I kinda wish we won them.

Yeah, what some people view as “straight talk” is easily construed by players as being thrown under the bus. I agree that Brady’s personality wasn’t his best coaching quality.

Yeah..we'd be what, 15-3? ?
With a quality win at VCU we'd be 16-2 ................ let that sink in

Brady was not a great public communicator, but Im not sure I agree with him throwing players under the bus. He had a northeast (yankee) edge to him, which was clearly not embraced by some folks.
I like the comparison Dukester laid out here and I agree. In style, the one thing I see that is strikingly similar is toughness. Whether it was Sherm, Deano, Sweet Lou, our guys were always more meek than the opposition. Games against Drexel, Hoftsra, VCU, ODU we would get run over by hard-nosed "city kids". I dont see that in Coach By's team. And didnt see it in Brady's bunch. Injuries were killers to Brady teams.

I think this message from NBA vet Rod Strickland tells us a lot about the relationship between the coaching staff and the players.

Good find. High praise coming from and NBA all-star.
So much of this makes me feel good.

Funny how answering a question with a straight answer equates 'throwing a player under the bus'.

10-15 years ago Coach Brady was good coach recruits wanted to play for. However times (and kids) change and the last 3 or 4 years Brady was the kind of coach that did not send the "I would really like playing for this coach" message. A local C-ville kid my son played AAU with.." JMU had everything going for it except a personality conflict with the HC"

Well, Semis still there, right?
So that gives By a quatro, right?
Should be all set

Be careful coach By. Sometimes the mind is willing but the body isn’t able in middle age.
Didn’t Dillard blow out his knee or Achilles dunking in practice with the team? My memory is fuzzy.

I know the year under Brady when we had all the injuries, he went down trying to practice with the team because we were out of bodies to run plays. Then Asst. Coach Rowe may have, as well.
