Interesting move. Utah State is a step up from UMBC for sure but is that the job you move 2,000 miles for?

Odom has never lived or worked west of Asheville, North Carolina. In other words, Utah State is running a risky "coaches can coach anywhere" experiment here.

How risky is it, really? Or is that just "conventional wisdom" that doesn't have much basis in reality?

I really don't know - I do know that Pitt was criticized when they hired Ben Howland out of NAU, in part because he'd never coached east of Flagstaff - all he did was take them to their first sweet 16 in 30 years, and next year first ever back to back Sweet 16's

My surprise is that it seems like Odom's name came up at a number of schools where his recruiting connections would be useful. Can't imagine too many Baltimore kids traipsing to Logan, Utah, though I guess you can never tell. He was reported to be on Virginia Tech's list in 2019 and his name came up with Wake Forest. You'd think if Earl Grant can go from Charleston to BC, Odom could have made a similar move. Utah State is a fine program; it just seems like a random move is all.

I agree, he seems like he would remain on the east coast. Then again, Steve Alford is a midwest guy and he did pretty well at New Mexico. Urban Meyer to Utah is a football analogy.

If Ryan Odom finds success then he'll be able to jump to a Power 5 gig and it's no longer that strange for coaches to be one and done at a spot. This seems like nothing more than a stepping stone gig.

This! Coaches can have success in the MWC, Rodney Terry won at Fresno State without any time coaching in the Pacific or Mountain Time Zone. Heck, UNM hired Richard Pitino to try the same thing.

I guess I've never thought of coaches and lines they have never lived on the other side of. People move all over the place all of the time. I'd say it would be more odd for a D1 coach to have never lived outside of one small geographical area.

Texas Tech promotes assistant Mark Adams to replace Chris Beard.

Looks like Oral Roberts' and North Texas' head coaches are out of luck with Oklahoma's and Texas Tech's jobs filled. I'm not sure if there any upgrades out there for them (unless you consider UMBC an upgrade).

A successful coach moves to new territory and establishes external relationships. Part of the expectations. Same with a college professor.

UTEP coach Rodney Terry has resigned per statement by the AD.

https://twitter.com/MauricioABC7/status/...27976?s=19

He’s joining Chris Beard in Austin.

So now the head coaches of UT-Arlington and UTEP have landed at UT-Austin as assistants to Chris Beard.

And the UTA head coach replaced the previous successful HC who was fired because the AD declared “We want to be Gonzaga”

Latest update, via ESPN.com:

https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basket...es-2021-22

UTEP seems to be the best job available now. Since that's the same conference as North Texas, that would probably be a lateral move for their head coach and El Paso isn't the Dallas area but C-USA is probably a step up from Oral Roberts.

Still awaiting Cincinnati if anything happens there.

Is this the biggest carousel in college basketball history? UNC, Arizona, Indiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Marquette, Iowa State, Texas Tech and possibly others like Cincinnati still possible to open.
