Yes, if true, that would change my view of the hire. I was worried we'd get a guy looking to hit the links and keep his pals employed a few more years.

If he hires a legit staff and hits the ground 100%, I'll jump on board.

He's far better than the kid from Oregon you guys just hired.

Don't you have a MWC board you can go spam for a while?

We'll find out the first week of the season, won't we?

Definitely an upgrade from Heupel. UCF should be thrilled that UTK took Heupel off their hands & essentially paid them to do it.

This is my feeling as well. Hard to say for sure he'll have the kind of success UCF fans are really wanting, but I think he's a really good coach who will do well there.

RE: Gus Malzahn to UCF
Our (new) AD openly admitted that our players voiced to him a desire for a coach who actually bothers to know them, and someone who runs a high powered offense but doesn't stand the defense on the field for 40 minutes a game.

Swipes at Heupel taken left and right. There's a ton of talent on this team, CJH simply didn't run a top to bottom program.

Gus is gonna do very well here IMO

Was Randy Shannon considered as an option for head coach? Thought he would be a good one for UCF.

Yes, he was interviewed and considered a finalist I believe. The problem is that he's a defensive coach, and I doubt there's much confidence he can keep the offense where we need it to be.

02-13-banana Great Hire I'm so excited

1. Has been CEO of a program before (made the tough decision's on player's)
2. Has hired and fired coordinators before
3. He likes dual threat quarterbacks (Cam Newton)
4. He will continue to recruit in the south
5. He checks all the boxes

RE: Gus Malzahn to UCF
Congratulations UCF! I want to share this with Knight Nation. Houston Nutt was struggling at Arkansas and was criticized for being too conservative offensively. So Nutt hired Malzahn out of the Arkansas high school ranks....but Nutt would not let Malzahn open up the play book. So Malzahn resigned after one season and took the Offensive Coordinator job at Tulsa. It looks like the Tulsa/UCF rivalry takes on another dimension with former TU Coach Malzahn at UCF.

FORMER QB REFLECTS ON GUZ MALZAHN ERA AT TU
By Bill Hasten, Tulsa World, January 6, 2014

"During the season, the Malzahn-Tulsa QB Paul Smith partnership flourished. In rolling to the Conference USA West Division title, a 41-point average and a 10 win finish, TU led the nation in total offense. Individually, Smith was No. 2 nationally in total offense."

"Even during Spring practice, Smith recalls, "I sensed that Coach Malzahn was a superstar play-caller already."

"It was awesome to play in Coach Malzahn's systen and be handed the reins to his system," said Smith. "Coach Malzahn trusted me to make changes on the field. He trusted me to be another coach on the field. It could not have worked out better."

He crushed it. I was indifferent on the hire before the presser and am all in after.

RE: Gus Malzahn to UCF
Gotta listen to the press conference again because everyone says he knocked it out of the park.

I heard a coach call us UFC

He believes he’s coached in the league before because I guess Tulsa and UCF were in the AAC back in 2007.

People seem to think he’s going to fire Randy Shannon even though I didn’t hear him say that. I heard him give some generic, I’ll be looking to build a staff because spring practice starts in 30 days.

Is he excited to be coaching? Yea, beats sitting at a media desk

Making $2.3M with $500K bonuses available.

Increased assistant salary pool by $800K, now to a total of $3.3M.

That's on top of his $21.5MM buyout at Auburn. And no state income tax.

With a $21,000,000 buyout Gus doesn't need the money. He is not coaching UCF for the $2.1 million per year deal. He really likes coaching. His press conference made me feel like he is a great hire. The talking heads seem to agree. Time will tell.
