Yeah this reminds me a bit of Tulane’s new OC Chip Long who was the OC at Notre Dame. He was extremely successful at his job EXCEPT when he played Top 5 teams like Bama. The ffan base had ridiculous expectations and he was run out of town.

Gus had one of the most difficult jobs in sports (it’s like Buffalo Bills or the Jets competitions against the Patriots and Belichick). I would say Gus did an admirable job at the highest level (superior to what the bills or jets have done) and will kick ass with UCF especially if he gets a prime OC who can work with Gabriel.

I think it's a good hire. Malzahn is a good coach, and has been unfairly criticized

This, I feel pretty good about this hire. Think he walks into a better (easier to win) situation than he had at Auburn. Auburn plays a ridiculously tough schedule every year. Plus, Guz is an offensive genius. Think he slays it at UCF given all the talent around the local area.

He lost 36 games over 8 seasons at Auburn, and only 5 of those were against Saban and Bama. I think the concerns aren't that he didn't win (as others pointed out, he was 8+ wins in 7/8 seasons). I think the concerns are that here are the 247 national recruiting rankings for Auburn during his 8 year tenure:

2013 = 10
2014 = 6
2015 = 8
2016 = 9
2017 = 9
2018 = 12
2019 = 11
2020 = 7

to parlay that into an average of 4+ losses/season doesn't portend well, especially since (and no offense to UCF here though it might be taken that way), Auburn's a helluva lot easier to recruit to than UCF. It's not the losses to Saban that bug, it's the losses to South Carolina, Mississippi State, Arkansas and Tennessee. In fact, if you take away his first year coaching Cam Newton and a team of primarily Chizik's recruits (full disclosure, he helped recruit some as Auburn's OC), his record over his last 7 years was 56-34 overall, 32-27 in the SEC.

Some may say that's the height of achievement for Auburn in the SEC and that their fans have unrealistic expectations (not unlike Tennessee or Nebraska these days). But a .542 conference winning percentage over the last 7 years is not exactly an omen of future success.

For as much as I'm not sold on Malzahn's chances at UCF, he's WORLD'S better than what Strong was at Texas, so I definitely don't think the Strong comparisons are fair. Tuberville's escape from Texas Tech with a cushy landing spot at Cincinnati is far more similar to Holgo's situation with WVU/Houston than anything resembling either Strong or Malzahn.

This is a really good point - UCF just hired a new AD, a new coach (who they probably don't have to pay much for) AND pocketed $6MM of Tennessee's money and almost certainly ended up with a better coach than they had!

FWIW we did the same thing with CSD and it's been a solid 'A' hire to this point.

Gus is an upgrade over JH. That's about all you can ask for in any hire.

What I laughed at was the line about ending the 7 day trial.

Contrary to what many people believe, he actually runs a very bland and boring offense and believe it or not Auburn was 10th in the SEC in passing yards per game last season. This is a very uninspiring hire.

The issue to me is not that UCF got a better deal compared to Tennessee, but rather could they have hired someone with better upside than Malzahn. Hiring rich, older retreads rebounding from failure gives me trepidation.

He's far better than the kid from Oregon you guys just hired.

Don't you have a MWC board you can go spam for a while?

I could have almost predicted this hire. For all of the reputation he developed of hiring young top level offensive minded coaches, Mohajir never really did that at AState. The hires that earned us that reputation came before he arrived. If you go through his hires in all of our other sports, they were almost always someone he knew, either from working with them previously or friendships.

Well yeah maybe, but Saban worked out pretty good at Alabama.

Saban had just won a national title at LSU before going to the NFL for a couple of years. That hire is in no way comparable to this.
I get I used Saban. Malzahn did go to a National Championship though and nearly won. It’s not a no way, you can make a comparison. The point was it doesn’t really matter his age. If you still got it, than you still got it. Mack Brown is another and over 10 years older. The point wasn’t Malzahn is equal to Saban. The point is about age.

Yeah, talk about an uninspired hire. If Avalos went to UNLV instead of Boise, there's no way he gets that job.

I think UCF will be in the NY6 this year. Malzahn did great at Ark State being the third head coach in 3 years and almost won the title at Auburn his first season. Whether he can develop and recruit his own players is another question.

Can someone explain to me what exactly he changed on his social media? I don't have a Twitter. Are UCF fans legitimately worried about losing Gabriel, or is this one person over reacting?

Apparently you haven't seen what Cincinnati returns this year.

Apparently he changed his profile pic to him wearing his high school Hawaii jersey..... now he put it back to the original.

This is a better hire than Tuberville or Strong. Nowhere near ready to call it a home run hire, but I can't imagine Malzahn will be as bad as either of those cadavers.

Gus apparently has a very significant assistant pool to play with and has some big time assistants lined up.
