(02-15-2021 03:05 PM)Tulsa Guy Wrote:  Congratulations UCF! I want to share this with Knight Nation. Houston Nutt was struggling at Arkansas and was criticized for being too conservative offensively. So Nutt hired Malzahn out of the Arkansas high school ranks....but Nutt would not let Malzahn open up the play book. So Malzahn resigned after one season and took the Offensive Coordinator job at Tulsa. It looks like the Tulsa/UCF rivalry takes on another dimension with former TU Coach Malzahn at UCF.

FORMER QB REFLECTS ON GUZ MALZAHN ERA AT TU
By Bill Hasten, Tulsa World, January 6, 2014

"During the season, the Malzahn-Tulsa QB Paul Smith partnership flourished. In rolling to the Conference USA West Division title, a 41-point average and a 10 win finish, TU led the nation in total offense. Individually, Smith was No. 2 nationally in total offense."

"Even during Spring practice, Smith recalls, "I sensed that Coach Malzahn was a superstar play-caller already."

"It was awesome to play in Coach Malzahn's systen and be handed the reins to his system," said Smith. "Coach Malzahn trusted me to make changes on the field. He trusted me to be another coach on the field. It could not have worked out better."

Thanks for that insight.

Honestly, tell him to go get Steele as the DC just like he did at AU and ya'll should be good to go. This is a pretty good hire.

Gus has won regularly at Auburn and has had a few top 10 teams. This will turn out to be more Sampson the Holgerson IMO. Good hire UCF!

He got fired for his season of '20 where his qb was not up to par and they had 2 games they only won because of horrible officiating. But, this is the coach that has beaten Saban by himself than the rest of the SEC coaches combined.

He beat Saban three times. The only other active coach able to beat Saban three times is Les Miles. Wanna try again?

RE: Gus Malzahn to UCF
As someone reasonably partial to Auburn, I was a frequent critic of Malzahn. It irked me that because of fortunate circumstances he had a much longer tenure as Auburn HC than Gene Chizik did, despite having arguably less success. As others have pointed out, his overall record there is not enviable. He seemed to be able to beat Nick Saban at just the moment grumblings about his job were rising, and that would buy him enough time to have yet another 4- loss season and lose his bowl game.

That said, I grudgingly admit it is a testament to UCF's program strength that you were able to attract him. Unlike say Charlie Strong when he came to USF, Malzahn's star, while somewhat dimmed, isn't as dimmed to nearly the same extent.

Of course I hope he's a failure at UCF, but for now, I admit the hiring has put the spotlight on your program and will attract recruits.

big difference being that there was a 5 year gap in-between auburn and cincy for tuberville and this one is a few months.

We experienced the same thing with Charlie Strong. It's a common hazard of being a G5 school.

RE: Gus Malzahn to UCF
I don't want to poo-poo this hire because I was not a fan of Heupel. I thought UCF could do better. I'm just not sure Gus is that much better. I've watched a lot of Auburn games over the years since my wife is a grad. Other than his first year, he never had double digit wins in a season outside of 2017 [10-4]. Most of the time he finished with 8ish wins. He really had some head scratching performances at times and couldn't win any big bowl games. I didn't think he recruited well at the QB position either. Consider:

2013 12-2 - Lost BCS Chip
2014 8-5 - Lost Outback Bowl
2015 7-6 - Won Birmingham Bowl
2016 8-5 - Lost Sugar Bowl
2017 10-4 - Lost Peach Bowl
2018 8-5 - Won Music City Bowl
2019 9-4 - Lost Outback Bowl
2020 6-4

I realize the SEC is as tough as it gets but I just never saw him more than a meh coach. Not terrible, not spectacular. For UCF's sake [and our league] I hope I'm wrong but I still think UCF can do better than Gus. I'll add, the new AD and Malzahn are familair with each other back to their days at Arky State. I hope this was more than a familiarity hire...

RE: Gus Malzahn to UCF
my only concern is that when this news broke last night Dillon Gabriel reacted like an immature brat bc Jeff Lebby wasn't hired. That definitely rubbed me the wrong way as a fan but I can not deny his talent. Without a QB all hope goes out the window so I hope that relationship works and DG stays

LOL, agree from an AAC competitive perspective. Overall congrats, good hire.

Two Outbacks (possibly best bowl outside the NY6) and three NY6 bowls bowl team every year averaged 8+ wins a season in a division with LSU and Alabama running at historic highes and Georgia being pretty damn good every single year of that time. Yeah that screams terrible to me.

This reminds me a lot of how FSU wanted a new guy so Jimbo went to AnM. Sometimes fan bases are irrational. This is not Strong failing to beat up on people while being the biggest kid on the block or Tubberville trying to finish up his retirement fund anywhere other than west Texas. This is a guy who fought it out at the top level with a lot of success just not enough for his fan base.

I think he will excel at UCF where the pressure and support will be high but not absurd. Cincinnati isn't Alabama and Memphis isn't Georgia.

And we're going through the same thing at Houston with CDH. These type of retread hires don't have a good track record. That said kudos to UCF for landing Gus for under 2.5 million. We're paying almost twice as much to watch Dana drive our program off the ledge.

The author expects Malzahn to crush AAC opponents with massive talent (“perhaps everybody but Cincinnati — has to brace themselves for Malzahn entering games with a talent advantage”) when in fact UCF has lately fallen behind in recruiting.

2021:
Memphis #2
UCF #4

2020:
Memphis #2
UCF #7

If Malzahn can only win with overwhelming talent, then either he has work to do or expect many defeats.
