Melissa Mc Ferrin has retired as head coach of the lady tigers effective immediately. This ends her 13-year reign as lady Tigers coach with a career record of 193-199

Maybe new stuff from the investigation. Maybe poor performance.

I figure it was the ongoing thread on the 9 coaches, only 9 coaches.

Except we fired Tubby after 2 mediocre seasons. We've kept her for 12.

Why'd we fire Hopkins? I wasn't living here then. Our baseball seems to have gone downhill worse since they fired him.

After Bobby's players left he flopped.

Really you are comparing a coach destroying the golden goose to a coach doing poorly with a money losing program?

If Tubby did not go then our basketball program would have not qualified for the FedExForum lease terms for 2 straight years , the grizzlies would have cancelled the lease and imposed whatever terms they wanted, we would be in a totally untenable position in the sport that pays all the bills.

I've always heard that Football is what will get us into a P5 conference (if it's possible), but it sounds like ticket sales at least were very close between Football and Basketball. Probably has something to do with higher donation levels required to purchase basketball season tickets. From Tom Bowen in 2019:
https://www.bizjournals.com/memphis/news...-mens.html
Quote:The primary revenue indicators over the next three years show 16 percent of that money coming from institutional support, 15 percent from student athletic fees, 13 percent from cash gifts and contributions, 12 percent conference distribution, 10 percent from men's basketball ticket sales, 9 percent from football ticket sales, 6 percent from licensing and royalties, and 2 percent from NCAA distribution, Bowen said.

My question was, "Why did we keep her so long in spite of her mediocrity?" Not "Why did we fire Tubby Smith?"

She was allowed to continue losing because she was not embarrassing the University and there was no pressure on them to do anything else.

Basketball has always generated much more revenue and is very profitable. IF we can manage to gain entry into the P5, the additional $20-30 million will change that very quickly.

Her program was an embarrassment --same as the baseball program ----the University should Be embarrassed For allowing mediocrity and apathy to continue that long .

That was surely the case in the past, but can you really conclude that given the increased revenue to the U re: TV money? We now get $7MM per year MORE than if we had been left behind in C-USA. And from what I have gathered, our promise to invest in football and our relative increased success since Tommy West took over was an over-arching reason we were selected.

Just thinking out loud...

That investigation over the past couple of years was pretty embarrassing. There's more to the story we're not hearing (Bowen, women's bb admin, contract, investigation, abuse, etc.).

I met her a couple of times and actually liked her. But she proved to be a mediocre coach, and there were evidently other issues as well. This was long overdue.

before the investigation two years ago , she was not embarrassing the University. Two years ago DURING and after the investigation at the highest level they made the decision to extend her contract when it was obvious that from an organizational AND basketball perspective that keeping her made not sense. SO.. The Administration felt getting rid of her two years ago was less risky from a PR perspective than giving her an extension.(for whatever reason)

Here is what we know:

She was extended in the middle of an investigation that was not flattering to her or the program. Her teams on court performance to that point could not in any way be responsible for the extension and yet they extended it.

At the end of the underserved extension mcFerrin abruptly resigns before season is out.

It is pretty obvious that as much as the investigation was not good PR for the University they felt that extending her was the best PR move and it looks like they were correct in their assessment. women’s basketball did poorly but did not burn down the Athletic Department or any administrators that we know of
