I’m convinced that people with pickup trucks or traction control vehicles are at more risk for wrecking in the snow here. The capabilities give people a false sense of security and they drive entirely too fast.

Also, people from snowy places on social media are bragging about how the pileup in Fort Worth wouldn’t have happened in their areas because they know how to drive in the ice. I don’t think there is much you can do when you have to stop quickly on a patch of ice and are going 70+ miles an hour. You’re just along for the ride at that point. And most of the vehicles in these pileups appear to be SUVs and pickup trucks

Having gradually made my way north over the years, I have to agree. We were down in Texas for Christmas a few years ago and it snowed. People didn't seem to get that you can't drive like normal in the snow. Better to get somewhere late than not get there at all. Places like that and Memphis don't have the infrastructure to deal with the snow like we do up north, so be even more careful out there.

Staying home. Bought a weeks worth of milk sandwiches

I invited my parents over for brunch and none of us realized that there is a thin layer of ice. Apparently, my dad sled through two lights and my mom made him turn around and go back home.

I’m now drunk in a food coma of biscuits, gravy, sausage, bacon, and eggs.

I've gotten marooned in Memphis more than once when storms hit.
Flights got cancelled....connecting flights got cancelled. It ain't like Denver where they run the planes through a big mechanical de-icer.

I was watching from the Memphis airport window while this one. lone. man sprayed the wings with de-icer using a freaking garden hose.

Be careful driving in this weather. The car going around the board just rear ended me.

New year's 1985 was a healthy snowfall as well, total over a foot, i think

At least all schools are used to virtual teaching - whether they do it well or not is a different story - but they are used to it

I remember the 85 one, we had a good snow day from school.

Here in Wisconsin we had a snow in December that they didn't cancel virtual schools for. The teachers were upset because many were teaching from their classrooms and didn't have the supplies they needed at home, but couldn't get to their schools to get the stuff.
A few weeks ago we got a lot of snow and they declared the day a traditional snow day. The next day was back to virtual school. I think the kids need to be able to get out into it for a little while, even with the virtual schooling, but snow days are likely going to be more of a thing of the past.

I was at MSU for that one. Made sure I was back in Memphis from Christmas break before the big snowstorm. There used to be a big field and empty parking lot north of Winchester around Hickory Hill. We had a blast out there.

I used to work with a bunch of Michiganders. They always made fun of Tennessee shutting down with any snow. Then I was in Detroit once when they were calling for ice in the evening. They shut everything down. Corp HQ closed at lunch and I had to go back to the hotel. I told them I thought they kept everything open during winter weather. They said, "Yeah but this is ice and it's different". I told them every snow we get comes with ice.

Really cold weather dry snow is so much different from our normal 30-degree weather wet snow.

This one looks like it's going to be a dry snow - once we got past the ice the other day.

Memphis teachers here have been "virtual" for almost a year now. Which really means they've had about 335 straight snow days. No accountability.

I wasn't around in '63 but 5 years after that on January 27th, there was also 14" of snow here in Memphis.

I think the problem in the south is not everybody is experienced enough to know how dangerous it is. Happens so infrequently that lots of people have never slid on ice, or know that the driven over packed snowfall on the road will freeze and act like ice. Don’t understand difference between icy and snowy conditions, don’t know to minimize side to side movement etc etc. in Midwest, northeast, big sky country since they routinely get feet upon feet of snowfall in all varieties every winter they can’t help but be experienced enough to be better/smarter about it.

I was. And it also got down to 13 below which was the low for the US that date believe it or not.

I now live in northern Iowa and -13 was our high today lol.
