Is this going to be another opt-out? Wouldn't be surprised at this point.

He probably doesn't want to play for Walker either. Smart move to get off the sinking ship. Walker will probably get a Covid pass and we will get more of the same next year.

As I've said before, he won't be fired or let go unless there are some real documented personality issues that are causing players to leave. He did win the league just last season.

Just wondering what your problem with Walker is. I'm not agreeing or disagreeing, but have to admit I was very happy with him last season.

I was happy with him last season too but the alarm bells are going off. We now have possibly 4 players from last year’s team that are gone (if Bankston has left). 2 of them have left on bad terms with the coach while the other 2 left for unknown reasons (for now). Didn’t this happen before Wimp came around (I was born after Wimp’s tenure)?

We had a player walkout when Jim Platt was coach. From what I recall, AD Mike Hamrick met with the players and they agreed to play.

That also marked the beginning of the end for Platt at Little Rock.

RE: Bankston
I followed UALR basketball starting in 87 because I knew I planned to transfer there in 89. I was there for Newell's last year. I saw what he was able to do by getting the talent in there and getting the most out of it. He did this with less support than he should have had after the success that he had. The school didn't do anything to promote the program on campus from what I could see. They played in Barton which was less than ideal but he still got good crowds to come to the games. It was a huge letdown when he left and Platt was terrible. I lived at South Oaks Apartments where the basketball team lived so I got to know several of the players. My upstairs neighbor was Carlos Rogers and Platt ran him off and we know how talented he was. All of the players i talked to didn't like him and didn't want to play for him.. Platt was going to coach his way regardless of the outcome. He ruined the program for several year with his rigid thinking. I see similarities with Walker. There is no excuse to have 10 wins at this point. Once again the program is in shambles. Something has to change. I don't think his heart is in it. He has nothing left to prove in basketball and he has had a good career but he isn't what we need for this program.

RE: Bankston
UALR92, thanks for your input. Not disagreeing with your assessment of Coach Platt since his difficulty relating to our players is well-documented. Just one personal comment about him- he happened to move into the house directly across from mine when he moved to Little Rock. I don't think I have ever known a nicer or more genuine person. His wife and 3 kids were wonderful people as well. Why he couldn't relate to players, I don't know. He sure could recruit talent, however.

As I have stated, I have never been more disappointed with a team than this one. I have been a fan since moving to Little Rock in 1982. Still, I am not ready to say the program is in "shambles". Less than a year ago we had the best team in the league. I have no idea what is going on inside the locker room and obviously don't have a direct line to the players like you did 30 years ago. I am very disappointed with some of our best players leaving. I had brief personal contacts with Lottie and Kamani, at team events, and they were likeable, engaging, and intelligent young men. Not sure I have talked to Markquis, but he seemed the same. Who knows what is going on with Kris who is very likeable as well. Still, without some reliable information, I can't fairly blame this all on Coach Walker. I do know that Chasse did not want to hire him, and was "forced" to do so, which is concerning. But, again, I was extremely happy with both our team and coach last year. This has been a crazy season for many reasons. Unless, there are real, significant underlying problems I have no reason to believe Coach Walker will not be back next season. Hopefully, he can get us back on the right track. If not, there will eventually be changes like there always are.

MJS I appreciate your thoughts and your post. I was getting the player perspective back in the day for sure and I know there are two sides to the story. I am just frustrated as I know you are because your are probably the most loyal fan they have. I agree that they won't let him go unless something else comes to light. I just want the program to return to respectability again. My game room is full of old UALR relics and I think about the glory days of the program as I know you do.

I was not and am not enthusiastic about bringing a pro coach back to college for several reasons. However, I have to admit that Walker did a commendable job last season.

I don't know what the problems might be this season, but I am willing to give Walker the benefit of the doubt with Nowell, because it was obvious Marquis had attitude problems from Day One. The AD is close to the situation and he can figure it out.

I have said this before, so excuse my being repetitive. But, my biggest reason for being in favor of hiring Darrell was his age and love of Little Rock. His success at Clark University added to my comfort level. I believed, and still do, that he would stick around for many years even if he was very successful. That is a rare scenario for midmajors like us, who typically will lose a coach quickly who wins big. Last season it looked like we hit the jackpot. This season, not so much. I think it is still to early to judge him, although I understand the reason many are concerned right now.

Oh, absolutely! He did a nice job of coaching last season, and has shown himself to be a good recruiter. I have no idea what the problem was with Johnson, but I am willing to give Walker the benefit of the doubt until we know otherwise. Today's kids have to be pampered more than in our days, and I kind of like a coach who won't do it - if in fact that is what it was.

RE: Bankston
And, of course, Walker has been a college head coach for four seasons, and his teams won at least 21 games in three of them. I think that would indicate a little patience.

RE: Bankston
I understand about Nowell and his attitude over the years. Also he didn’t seem to be playing at the level this season as he did last year. It may be a part of the story of conflict.

Of course, I know we don’t like what’s going on right now but we still don’t know what’s going on in the locker room specifically. It may be Walker’s fault, or it may not be. I’m worried but I know I can’t do anything about it. Overall, the AD is the one who would know about it and I trust him in whatever judgement he does this season and/or the next when it comes to men’s basketball leadership.

I am more disappointed with Flannigans TWO seasons at LR than any of Walkers.

Not sure what one has to do with the other.

Well I can maybe get the Flanagan comparison if you’re talking about his first year to Walker’s 3rd when it comes to expectations. However one coach could recruit talent (and has lost a good batch of it) while the other just couldn’t get together a talented team whatsoever.

Well to be fair to Wes, he did recruit Rayjon who currently is under an NBA two-way contract. I also bet he would have signed his son, a sophomore, who is currently listed as a lottery pick in the upcoming NBA draft. So while I've loved Darrell's recruiting, I doubt he has signed anyone that will achieve as high as these 2 guys.
