New football assistant coach
According to the Athletic, we're hiring Jim Jackson as our new tight ends coach. He's a Texas native (Cornell grad) who was most recently at UMass.

Chris Monfiletto is moving over to special teams to take over for Drew Svoboda (who went to Memphis), so that's why we have a TE coach opening.

RE: New football assistant coach
Our special teams play overall has been generally better under Bloomgren than it was under Bailiff. I hope that continues. But that's really more a function of how much emphasis the HC puts on special teams than it is a reflection of any specific coordinator, which would augur well for a continuation.

Not sure I agree with you. Lembo is one of the best, if not THE best, specialty teams coaches in all of college football. I'm assuming we're still using the schemes and drills he put in place during Bloom's first year.

And one of the best things about a guy like Lembo is that he has the stature to argue that the coach should pay it proper attention when other members of the staff are arguing for more time to spend on blocking 32G or something like that. The schemes and drills are pretty much standard. The dividing line is whether the HC merely gives you enough practice and meeting time to get them right, or enough that you cannot possibly get them wrong.

Interesting. I saw the Marshall ST coach tweeted he was moving to Rice a couple days ago...

Well we are the most sought after coaching destination in the country. Either way, it sounds like we'll announce that change shortly.

Here's the Athletic link.

https://theathletic.com/2201022/2021/02/...g-changes/

I guess we're not completely out of the woods yet, but hanging on to Brian Smith for another year at DC would be a big plus for the football program.

My first thought when I read about this hiring is “how in the world is Brian Smith still employed at Rice?!? At this point, it seems like he should either be a head coach at a school similar to Rice or defensive coordinator at a school with a much much better stature than Rice!”

Rice has historically brought in coaches from outside who did not hire Texas HS coaches to their staffs. Fred Goldsmith was an exception, and it definitely paid off for him. When Baylor brought in Matt Rhule from Temple, almost the first thing he did was to add two Texas HS coaches, one of them the past president of the THSCA and the other a recent winner of two state championships. It didn't hurt that I think both had Baylor connections. In a poll taken by TexasFootball magazine a couple of years ago, Texas HS coaches named TCU's Gary Patterson as the NCAA D1 coach they trusted most (and the impact on TCU's program is obvious) and Rhule second. Rhule clearly understood the need to build relationships with Texas HS coaches, and obviously did it well.

I've said it before, if got hired as Rice football coach, I would try to build my staff with 1) three coordinators (offense, defense, special teams) that I knew and could trust completely to run their respective areas, and who had national connections, 2) past presidents of the Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana HS coaches' associations (good coaches who are well- connected personally and politically), and 3) guys with Rice connections, preferably former players, as many as possible in steps 1) and 2), and for all remaining staff positions. Out of a staff of 10, that would be 3 coordinators, 4 HS coaches, and at least 3 former Rice players. A huge factor in recruiting is how willing HS coaches are to speak favorably of your program.

If nominated I will not run, if elected I will not serve.

I had some success as a rugby coach, building a program from 5 women showing up for practice to a national sweet-16 berth. But I'm not a US football coach, just know something about organizational dynamics. I do know one thing, I'm a hell of a lot better coach when an all-American player shows up.

BTW, some years ago, RUOwls shared with me his thoughts about assembling a staff, and it was pretty much along those lines.

Reminds me of another famous line about electoral participation: Calvin Coolidge's 1928 "I do not choose to run" -- which could also serve as a football philosophy (or the race strategy of the infamous Rosie Ruiz in the 1980 Boston Marathon).

His contract expires in six months. We should know something soon. I can't imagine him not being retained.
