I'm all for better gratuities for servers during the pandemic and this has been a fun story. Alternately, I'd like it better if more people were simply tipping more and doing so more frequently, than making a spectacle of these thousand dollar gratuities.

The national spotlight on it is fun for the city and UC I suppose, even if it's shared with brand x. I'll suggest the bigger brand, UC, benefits more from such exposure.

I've always been a start at 20% and go up tipper...I only dip if the service is really bad and the waiter doesn't seem to care that it is bad.

I've upped my tipping a ton since the pandemic. Tipping well on all carry out. Tipping a couple dollars if I get a coffee and often tipping the price of the coffee if it's a local, privately owned shop. I always thought it was important, but have really upped my tipping as I know people/businesses may be struggling.

This is a cool event. They should make it an annual tradition as part of the shootout week.

Agreed that it's even more important than ever to tip generously when warranted. I would like to see the whole tipping system go away and be replaced by livable wages for service employees, but as long as things are the way they are, those who can afford to tip a little extra should do so to help those struggling. Bartenders and servers have probably taken a huge pay cut.

I delivered pizzas when I was younger, and working for tips is rough -- especially when you're using your own vehicle/gas. There was nothing more demoralizing than rushing an order to the edge of the delivery area, being friendly at the customer's door, and walking back to the car with no tip.

I delivered pizza as well over 20+ years ago. Pizza delivery tips are historically tougher to come across than being a server because there are different schools of thoughts regarding tipping (ie. no 15% rule). I can remember delivering big orders in sometimes adverse weather conditions and people giving maybe a $1-- even if you deliver it in a reasonable time period and you are very friendly. We used to have one house that had a weekly order of $90 worth of pizza and drinks that was notorious for $1 tip. The crazy thing was the house was located in the far corner of our delivery grid.

If the kitchen screwed up the order or were backed up, you were the one paying the price of getting stiffed. Delivery driving taught me that unless the driver is brand new, the food arriving late was rarely the fault of the driver.

It was a fun job though. Not a bad job for some people.

Yeah, I had a lot of fun doing it, and it certainly wasn't the worst job I ever had. We had a couple lifers who were in their 40's and had been delivering pizzas for 20+ years. If you work in a busy enough shop and you're willing to give up your Friday and Saturday nights every week, you can make decent money. You also have to be willing to drive a beater, or at least something with good gas mileage.

Also, I don't know what it's like in most shops, but working for Domino's, drivers are expected to help out when they're not on deliveries. So answering phones, making pizzas, working the cut table (boxing up stuff coming out of the oven), cleaning, and prep work were all part of the gig.

RE: CrosstownTip-Off
Earlier this week the "tip off" made NBC's Today Show. This morning, national coverage continued as it was featured on "Fox and Friends" in a short piece by Brian Kilmeade. Here's the best part--Brian shared that it was a challenge between fans of the UC Bearcats and the "X-zavier" Musketeers. As suggested earlier, I think the team named Cincinnati as the bigger brand, benefits more than a school that major media members don't know well enough to even pronounce its name correctly.

But the biggest beneficiaries are the people who have served us in Tri-State restaurants and bars through this pandemic--probably at risk to their personal health and with greatly reduced incomes. Cheers to them...and to longer hours returning!

RE: CrosstownTip-Off
Bearcat Journal is currently doing a crowdsourcing on Pay Pal and Venmo for the Holy Grail and Mio’s in Clifton. Currently a little over $10K this morning, X had their own for Dana Gardens and are in close range.

If you want to give you sign up and give whatever you can give to Bearcat Journal. Some people have only given $1.
