Football Recruiting
In the Houston Chronicle sports page today they posted the All-Greater Houston selectees, and their Defensive Player of the Year was our guy Cal Varner III, from 6A Division II State Champion Katy Tigers. Happens to be my alma mater - back in 1966 when we were a 2A hi school in a farming community. Not no more.

Cal is 6'4" and 225, a Defensive End, graduated hi school in December, so he's at Rice now for the spring semester. That gets him an extra spring training over kids who come in Sept - really, really meaningful to their development, plus gets them acclimated to the academic environment in the off-season. I wish we could get more of our kids in early.

Had an interception for a touchdown, and 2 TFLs, in the state championship game which Katy won over Cedar Hill 51 - 14.

RE: Football Recruiting
I hope he becomes a star, and plays at Rice his entire career.
