If we are going to be an exceptional top tier mid major again, we will have to be exceptional and not just like everyone else.

So I take it Gonzaga is not a top tier mid major because they take transfers just like everyone else. Get a grip.

They are hardly comparable to ODU as far as getting transfers. They are an elite team and can skim off the top of the list, a list that will pretty much always include some talented athletes. Kids often want to leave a school to go to Gonzaga and compete for an NCAA title.

I had a convo with a former player. I was complaining about almost all our 3 pt shooters get worse rather than better. He simply said, “tough coach to play for and very tough when you get zero positive reinforcement”. That is word for word what he said. That was the turning point for me supporting JJ and wanting a change.

Interesting comment. I wonder how that compares to BT? I know Blaine was pretty tough and had terrible language. Yet I know most of his players loved him and knew he would do anything for them.

I've heard the same from a former player who's still close with the program.

The majority of players you talk to will say the exact opposite.

So you're saying that True Blue and NYG just happened to come across a couple of outliers? Wonder what the odds of that happening were.

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting: 2021
ODU has had some terrible shooting teams for about the last 20 years. Haha. Newsflash! We can’t shoot. BTs teams shot the ball horrendously as well. Our best team ever, or at least the best team we’ve had in the last 20 years... The 09/10 team shot 31 percent from three and scored 67 points a game.

Actually if you look at the offensive numbers, BT and JJs teams are almost the exact same. It’s scary. Main difference is that BT had some elite defensive teams. JJ has had some good defensive teams. That’s about the only difference. And we used to play in a conference where people actually cared about the games. But offensively I’ve been watching the same garbage for 20 years... lol.

Men's Basketball Recruiting: 2021
Blaine tore them down and built them back up. I remember one of our better years we played Towson who lost something like 50 games in a row and won something like 47-44. That remains the worst college basketball game I have ever seen. Blaine’s shooters did tend to get better in bigger games and he always had stud garbage men... Dahi, VV, Hassell, Cooper... who got a lot of offensive rebounds and put backs.

I agree but BT always knew how to ensure we had rebounding and right positioning to ensure we got second and third chance opportunities. His offense always ensure when a shot went up we had rebounders positioned to get the offensive board. Plus his philosophy was keep throwing them up and we will go get them for easy stick backs.

Plenty of schools have no issues with transfers. Heck, most get excited. Even in our football thread people are excited for transfers. But, if our basketball team takes a tranfers....its bad.

IMO transfers should be used to supplement the team, to fill in holes created by premature departures of players for whatever the reason - especially for upper class players that would have been depended on to lead. Transfers should not evolve into becoming the mainstay of a program from year to year. I agree with the reasons given in EverRespect's earlier post above regarding 4 year recruits versus transfers.

IF WE HAVE NO ISSUES IN TRANSFERS, THEN DON'T WASTE MONEY OR TRYING TO RECRUIT 3/4 STAR HIGH SCHOOL PLAYERS. UNTIL A NEW YOUNG AND ATTRACTIVE COACH COMES, WE WILL NEVER BE MORE THAN A LITLE BELOW AVERAGE, NATION WIDE.

Im on board with the idea that you use transfers to plug holes, not build a program. But they are needed sometimes, and a lot of times you don't get the transfer later unless you've built the relationship in high school.

I agree, but JJ doesn't have the ability to recruit top freshmen. His team is always mainly been lead by transfers (7 years).

IF NCAA PASSES NEW RULE, YOU WILL SEE MOST OF JJ'S RECRUITS, TRANSFERS OR JC. MAYBE WE CAN CUT OWN RECRUITING BUDGET, AND FORGET ABOUT SPENDING TIME AND MONEY ON HIGH SCHOOL PLAYERS.

Jones is navigating the best team in the conference over the last 6 years and you can't convince me otherwise. Sure, it's not saying much that we are the least smelling poop in the poopy conference. But it's the hand he's been dealt.

Getting this level of performance and wins is what matters. Who actually gives a F how he gets there, via freshman or transfers or bigs or smalls? Fast ball or slow ball? Seriously, he just keeps winning and people like you keep finding ways to hate him.

Here's our finishes over the last 7 years.

8th, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 3rd.

Wins in conference those years:

9, 13, 15, 12, 12, 13.

Average place: 3.5th. Average wins: 12.3.

We are the best team in this conference. Who do you think is better? Middle? WKU? Mar$hall? (put the dollar to prevent certain posters from showing up and making it more poopy)

Over the last 6 years (not including this goofy season):

ODU average place: 3.5
ODU average conference wins: 12.3

WKU avg place: 5
WKU avg conf wins: 11.1

MT avg place: 6
MT avg conf wins: 11.1

Marsh avg place: 6.2
Marsh avg conf wins: 10.3

So what else can you talk about, 'bluelight', other than the types of players Jones recruits or the style of basketball he plays? What else you got?

JJ is past his time and you know it. NO THREE POINTS SHOOTERS NO CAPABLE PG TO TAKE CURRY'S PLACE NEXT YEAR AND AFTER NEXT YEAR IT WILL BE AN ALL TRANSFER TEAM AFTER 7 YEARS IT IS TIME FOR YOUNG BLOOD!

I don't think Blaine acted like a crazy man (pulled a player out if he made a mistake (except Greene), and used vocal foul language to his player's in front of crowds. Little personality and bad temper. I know other coaches, use this in recruiting players. We seem to always come in second or less.

No, he did much worse. He showed up to games, practices and his coaches show drunk.

The criticism that I remember of pre-sauced Blaine was incomprehensible in-game substitutions. Someone would get a hot hand, and the next thing you know he was riding the pine. He also got a lot of criticism for his loyalty to favorite players who were struggling - - Darius James and M. Delancey come to mind.

But I do agree that, at least in the personality department, BT had it all over JJ. And I also suspect that carries over, at least to some extent, to coach-player relations.

I’m honestly not a JJ fan but at least I’m not delusional. John Wooden wouldn’t save this program at this point. I’m honestly surprised we aren’t even worse. We aren’t going to sign top high school talent. We literally don’t even have a rivalry game. This conference has ruined every decent bball program that’s in it. You think ODU has it bad? La Tech, WKU, Charlotte, UAB. All were once good bball programs. 1 NCAA appearance between those 4 schools since joining. Just embarrassing. Every bball program in this conference is an afterthought and has gotten worse. It’s a complete disaster. ODU used to have 5 in state conference rivals. Now they have zero. We have much bigger problems than the coach. But yeah none of that effects recruiting at all....
