Who are your school's biggest rivals?
There is nothing more exciting on a Fall Tuesday night than MACtion. With signing day here, young players across the country are signing with schools where they will undoubtedly contribute to the program's traditions and rivalries. As fans of MAC schools, what are some of the best rivalries in the MAC? Who is your school's biggest rival?

We are the students and professors of the Know Rivalry Project. In 2014, we began answering this questions related to rivalry in College Football. Please help us update and expand our results for the MAC by taking 9 minutes to complete our newest survey:

https://umassamherst.co1.qualtrics.com/j...1&mbsrc=mb

We use Qualtrics online survey software for data collection. This academic research has been approved by two US universities' Institutional Review Boards (IRB) and it poses zero risks to participants. You'll find more information on the disclosure agreement that is required to start the survey.

Our previous results have been featured in several sports media outlets, as well as the Wall Street Journal and New York Times. You can view those results, links to media coverage, and learn more about us at our knowrivalry.com website BUT we'd prefer you didn't until you completed the survey via the link above... we don't want to influence your opinions provided in the survey. Thank you for helping us to include the MAC by participating and please feel free to share this with any other fans who may also help.

But neither are quite the intensity of the other rivalries (WMU/CMU, Ohio/Miami, Kent/Akron, ect)

OU had the Battle for the Bell with Marshall. The two schools are only 80 miles or so apart.

Miami/Marshall might be its own rivalry, as I believe they were two of the better football schools back when Marshall was in the MAC.

Miami-NIU has a trophy (the Mallory Cup) but it's not a rivalry at all. Miami-Ball State (the Redbird Rivalry) isn't really one either but at least we play every year, it's a pretty close drive for visiting fans, and we've had some good games the last few years.

Miami-Marshall was very heated back in the day if I'm not mistaken. I wasn't a fan of us until years after they left the MAC but it inspired quite a bit of passion that OU didn't at the time (before they turned things around during Solich).

CMU/WMU by a large margin.
CMU/EMU to a lesser extent.
CMU/MSU (to an almost non existent extent).
Some of us still consider MSU a rival due to CMU's history of beating MSU. But in reality, MSU could care less. Kind of like how MSU considers UofM their biggest rival, but UofM considers Ohio State their biggest rival by a large margin.

If you ask me, Buffalo and Bowling Green have had some good games over the years. It was sort of getting there as a rivalry until the Falcons started playing like Oberlin.

(We'll turn it around. We just need some time.)

I think the deal with Buffalo is they have different rivals based on sports, where at BG your rival is Toledo whether it is football, basketball, or tennis...it doesn't matter.

I think UB basketball has some good rivals because the program has been good the last seven years or so.

But going back to the rival conversation...
Ohio/Miami is Battle of the Bricks in every sport
Akron/Kent State is Wagon Wheel in every sport

This is where UB misses that geographical rival in this conference.

I thought UMass could have been that.

If Albany or Stony Brook ever want in, I'd be open to that, personally.

I put 70% BGSucks, 25% NonRivals (football significance), and 5% WMU (for their stealing of a MAC title chance in 2015, the debacle this year in football, and beating us in the MACC in mbb in 2014). Most schools seem to eye us in sports. Mbb has had some Fiesty games against EMU and Kent over the years as well.

RE: Who are your school's biggest rivals?
For CMU, our oldest rival is Eastern Michigan, going back to 1902; but our biggest rival is Western Michigan, which actually began in 1905 with a CMU win over WMU's club team.

Beyond those two, I would say Toledo (since joining the MAC) and Northern Illinois, the latter of which CMU competed with for many years in the Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference before joining the MAC in 1971.

FIR EUP CHIPS! :)

Can we get an extra percentage point for the 2000 football season?

lol going 10-1 and losing in the rain to a team who eventually lost to Marshall, who we beat 42-0.... yeah sure haha. Toledo did avenge that loss many times since.

maybe even another point for the flame pants game at home

For football UMass felt like a good bet, especially after beating us at home in 2015 to sink our bowl hopes. An all-sports UMass would be great for UB.

I often pull for Stony Brook for a key UB rival, set-up the AAU flagships, Long Island market, and 30k+ UB alumni in the Tri-State. Though Stony Brook is as far to drive from Buffalo, as it is to Muncie. And starting a new Olympic sports rivalry with little history would take decades, as we have only played Stony Brook in MBB 6 times, and never in WBB. UB has more history against Marshall, YSU, even the U. of Toronto, than SBU, and Albany, too. The Buffalo Little 3 schools will likely stay our light rivalries, even with any near-term MAC expansion. 03-hissyfit

Ohio-Miami was passionate in basketball back in the day when Miami was formidable in that sport.
