TU or UT?
There was some discussion about TU or UT buried in a recruiting thread so I thought I would start a new thread with some more information.

The University started as the Toledo University of Arts and Trades, so TU was appropriate. The school became a municipal university in 1884 and was renamed Toledo University (still TU).

In 1947 the name was changed to University of Toledo (UT) and shortly thereafter "The" was added to the name. However, the local population was used to TU and it took quite a while for UT to become predominant.

One of the biggest stumbling blocks was The Blade which continued to refer to the University as TU well into the 1980's (?). This was frustrating because the University wanted to determine how it was branded and it became a contentious subject between the two entities. Eventually The Blade relented.

RE: TU or UT?
My freshman year was 1967 and I thought that was the year of the name change. I'm old so I could be wrong.

UT became a state university in 1967.

Its still UTMC, the former Medical University of Ohio. Hell its been 15 years since that happened...… The Blade, dull, bent, and rusted. How is that for branding?

ps- I think the writing staff is good, just Block Family drama rises to the surface.[/align]

RE: TU or UT?
I just looked at my diploma and although the date is June 1965, It does say University of Toledo and not Toledo University. There are references on the diploma noting it was granted based on the statutes of the State of Ohio.

The University of Toledo, 1967-Present

On July 1, 1967, The University was given the status of a state-funded university by the Ohio General Assembly and became known as The University of Toledo. The University of Toledo has since grown to house 8 colleges, a student population of 20,000, and four campuses on more than 450 acres of land. On July 1, 2006, The University of Toledo merged with the Medical University of Ohio. The newly merged institution remained known as The University of Toledo.

My timeline is from The Tower Builders the most comprehensive 464 page book about the first 100 years of The University of Toledo.
