Is there a ban against intra-conference transfers (MAC)
Has the MAC banned intra-conference transfers in FB and basketball?

I thought the MAC did. Some other conferences do not.

I know there have been some in the past: Grunkenmeyer from OU to Miami - Derek Jackson from CMU to Kent State - a kid from Akron to OU all come to mind. If there is a ban, there seems to be a way around it.

Definitely rare. Can’t think of any recent ones. In 1972 a BG guy transferred to Toledo and vice versa- that’s the last I recall but I’m sure there are others.

Bubba Walther went from Akron in 2005-06 to Ohio in 2006-07. I dont remember specifics, but I seem to remember he had to pay his own way for the first semester (or maybe first year) as he couldnt be on scholarship right away for some reason.

EDIT: Found a story on the transfer from the Akron student paper. It says "To compound Walther’s risk, Dambrot denied Walther the release from his UA scholarship after he left. Without a release, Walther cannot accept a scholarship his first year at Oh"

The 1972 situation was Kindle going to Toledo from BG and Cooper going from Toledo to BG. Both were guards. It appeared to be a trade but it was really just a coincidence.

And Kindle was All-MAC while Cooper was mediocre on his good nights.

Derek Jackson started at Central Michigan from 2010-2012 before leaving. After a year off, he played 2013-2015 at Kent State

I wonder if a ban has been imposed after the transfer portal came into effect.

I believe MAC coaches don't want the drama (or whatever term) of having players moving from team to team within the conference.

MAC does not ban intra-conference transfers, but they take away a year of eligibility. Of course, that can be waived in some circumstances. See the MAC handbook.

QB Ryan Hawk was blocked by Big Ben and Josh Betts at Miami and transferred to Ohio and started two years.

Thank you. I knew there were some kind of provisions but not sure what.

I gave you a +2 for your post but should have tried for +20. Any post which refers back to the conference published rules and regs for the definitive answer is good by me!!
