RE: Penny coaching vs UCF in Monday blowout win
Clearly improved. Coaching is tough. You're "responsible" for many variables. Penny gets it. He relates to the players (some try to turn this into a negative), he understands their motivations (every player is different), and he understands that those motivations change. Penny has mentioned how he coaches ALo differently now that he did in HS. He's smart enough to assess the situation and he's confident enough to trust his assessment. Our fans made Pastner unsure of himself. Don't expect that to happen with CPH.

It's fun to watch teams get better as the season goes on. All the best teams have that trait. Now if we can bring in talent, be permitted to use that talent and improve that talent LOOK OUT!

Penny is doing a great job. As fans, we all want more. We all want to be better. It's good to recognize what we have.

And do yourselves a favor, stop being led by media personnel. GP does not know basketball. He makes a living stirring the pot and presenting exciting drama that we drool over.

I enjoy Tiger athletics SO MUCH MORE since I stopped listening to our local pot-stirring media and national media that bash/underrate us.

Come on, I appreciate knowing which team is ranked higher in KenPom and how many star recruits they have (I think that's the normal extent of GP's basketball analysis).

Bingo. He doesn't have to be Andre Turner but if he can do that, it would be huge.

You can add Jason and John to that too. They bring on experts and do all the talking. Least Parrish lets his guest speak and finish a sentence.

The same GP who convinced many that the college football season would never be played?
Fortunately my commute is different these days, and I don't have to listen to those guys real time. Now I can pick and choose what I want to hear via podcasts.

RE: Penny coaching vs UCF in Monday blowout win
I think A LOT of Top 25 teams are having the same problem as Coach Penny. The players are entering transfer portal on the fly. The HCs have to re-evaluate the team and tweak it to see which lineup is best. The HCs STILL have to be on top of their recruiting. And, of course, the NCAA and certain media in town made Coach Penny's team go in shambles with the Wiseman Infraction, which IMHO was NOT an infraction. But, also, because HS kids jump straight to NBA, like RJ Barrett, all of Coach Penny's hard work recruiting him goes down the drain.

A LOT of things go on everyday for Coach Penny, and, THAT don't include what goes on on the court. So, I think Coach Penny has done a great job, especially recruiting. Looks like he's not concentrating on a bunch of Top 10's, but, Top 50, so not too many will be One And Dones.

As for this season's record, look at Kentucky and Calipari. Calipari's job is on the line if you read local news. And, out of all those years Calipari had Top 10 teams, he's only had one championship ring. So, to expect Coach Penny to have a great year every year is expecting a lot these days.

But, yes, there are reasons to criticize Coach Penny, but, he's still new. He did make mistakes and all, but, he seems to be learning. In the beginning he was brash and boastful, but, has found to be more "professional".

But, the difference between Coach Penny and the other HCs after Coach Finch is that Coach Penny was raised in Memphis and REALLY LOVES the city and the school. You could not say that about Calipari or other HC's except for Coach Finch. And, so, you can bet Coach Penny REALLY CARES about making the Tigers successful. And, I believe he can make to the Finals and win.

So, I have been with Coach Penny from the beginning, have some criticisms, but, don't want him gone.

Yep. that's been one benefit of COV-ID social distance working. No afternoon commute with GP.

Absolutely.
There are no ulterior motives with Penny. He doesn't need the money. He doesn't want the fame. And he's not trying to use the job as a stepping stone.
If Pastner got 6 years - Penny deserves twice that.

Dipshiits, such as myself, lose sight of the fact that he’s still a young coach. There are and have been times he’s deserved criticism but right now he is very deserving of significant praise.

One year as an assistant on a D1 team would have done wonders for him.

Yep.

It could be because they didn't want him hired---that greg childers guy being a case in point.

That dude is a POS.

I have been critical of Hardaway some on this board. But I can be a pompous and intolerant ass — and those qualities perhaps drove my posting. Penny seemingly is improving his coaching skills as the season progresses. Credit is deserved.

I think most of us believed Penny would get the talent and winning would just follow naturally. Of course, it doesn't work that way. There's hard work, chemistry, and a lot of other things that figure into a solid program. Last year was a mess through no fault of Penny's with JW, injuries, etc. I think he is figuring it out and I am excited to see what happens moving forward. Sure wish our first Houston game was at the Forum instead of being at their gym, but we'll see.

Honestly I don't see a ton of changes in strategy...

I think Williams getting acclimated to playing has done wonders. But honestly this team is still flawed from a primary ball handler standpoint.

ALo can get into the lane...But that is mainly because teams let him...They are playing off of him trying to close passing lanes. That should be insulting to ALo and I cant think of any more motivation to improve my outside shot.
