But, the pool of potential hires for a school like NIU should be extremely long. This isn't Kansas or North Carolina or any of the destination locations. For those jobs (and some others I'm not listing) the obvious candidates are...well...obvious.
But the further down the pecking order you go, the list gets much broader. While Frazier, probably has a list of candidates (I'm assuming he didn't just fire Montgomery on a whim with no previous thought about what to do next) but to expect him to know everyone who might be qualified and/or interested is ridiculous.
There's been some suggestions on this thread that are a step above posting the job on Craigslist and wait for the qualified candidates to apply to Frazier should know the entire staff of every D-1 and D-II program (along with the high school over in Merrillville...) in the country to the point that he should have a comprehensive go to list of perfect candidates.
That's impossible but that is exactly what firms like Parker provide. When ADs of mid-major programs are stuck with their own network and inexperienced alumni who desperately want the job is the exact circumstance that leads to people bitching about how Wofford or Nichols or UMBC or Montana State hired some great young coach who is doing wonders and NIU is once again, languishing in mediocrity because the new hire wasn't the best guy out there.
Why anyone wouldn't want Frazier to have the ultimate list to pick through is beyond me. It's almost like people want him to purposefully handcuff himself so you can continue to ***** about it because, God forbid he actually find a good coach.
The only question should be whether or not Parker is actually the best firm to work with.
No one has said we don't want the best choice. What is being questioned is the value added by such a search firm given NIU's situation. COntrary to what you say, North Carolina, or Kansas, etc. ... they have much more to lose with the wrong choice, and much more to work with in terms of resources. They can invest in a search firm, if fo no other reason than for the AD to cover his/ her butt with fans to say, "well, this was the best guy available according to the high prices search firm." That's all you really get. And my point is, we don't need that. We are not going to land Roy Williams or even Bruce Weber. The guy we need and who will fit in best is a young, incredibly enthusiastic hard worker who will run through brick walls, is personable with fans, donors, the community, and yeah, players. Interview 100 guys if you need to to find that guy, wherever he is. He is likely NOT on the bench at a Power 5 team. But there is no substitute for YOU, STF, doing the hard work necessary to find that guy. Otherwise, hire a grad assistant. Save the Search Firm money, save a lot on salary, and build a nest egg with that money for 3 years down the line using it to get a "name" coach.
Or, as I said before, put that money into game day atmosphere, recruiting FANS, etc.
But I don't really care what you do, just do it within the context of a well thought out strategic long term plan, NOT a follow the herd mentality of hiring and paying a search firm.
So, STF, tell me that is what you are doing and show me how this all fits into the master plan for basketball or NIU athletics, and there we go. We are set.
Or don't tell me (us) that, and then accept the critique and questions.
