UVA AD, ANNOUNCED COMPLETE LAYOFFS AND CUTS IN THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT. EVEN THE AD SAID SHE TOOK A CUT, LAST SPRING. ALSO KEEP IN EFFECT THAT UVA RECIEVES A LOT OF BIG DONERS (IN THE MILLIONS). HAVING SAID THAT, THE ODAF MUST BE OVER EXCEEDED IN FUNDING FOR ATHLETICS, AS WE STILL PAY SCHOLRSHIPS AND HAVE NO REVENUE IN FOOTBALL AND VERY LITTLE IN BASKETBALL (INCLUDING CANCELLED GAMES/TRAVEL). I GUESS IT APPEARS, WOODIE IS DOING A GREAT JOB, SINCE ODU HAS NOT HAD TO REVERT TO ATHLETIC CUTS. GOOD JOB, WOOD,IN YOUR ECELLANT BUDGETING. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. I FEEL SORRY FOR INCOMING STUDENTS! CAPS = FRUSTRATION

WHY AM I ALWAYS SORRY TO CLICK ON BLUELIGHT? IS IT POSSIBLE AN AD LIKE UVA HAS MANY MANY MORE EMPLOYEES THAN ODU? WHO PERHAPS ARE PAID MORE THAN ODU? I DONT KNOW BUT IT SOUNDS REASONABLE TO ME.

Page 3 of virginian pilot sports is where I always thought they posted odu wins and page 1 was where odu loses were posted. Seriously,I always thought that VP thought we lived in blacksburg or Charlottesville. I go to greenville a lot and they cover east carolina like they are their team not nc state Duke or unc. I always felt like if our local media covered odu like it was our team, we would be doing a WHOLE lot better. I thought I would keep up the capital theme.

I agree with this completely. ODU football and basketball and NSU should be page one coverage every day. Put Tech and UVA and JMU in the back

The paper is/was in a unique, difficult position. Much interest in ACC, UNC, UVA and VT by way of alums, TV exposure, etc.
ODU had always been a priority (until recent blood letting, which the editorial people are powerless over). And in truth those programs have been better than ODU. Things aren't helped by the transient nature of the community and the university's inability to cultivate itself as a program locals should get behind. For (a bad maybe) example, if our hoops was on par with a Louisville type program, odu would get much more intense coverage. Then again, when you look at how they covered football, they've done very well by us. IMO

Until 2 or 3 years ago, the VP did fine by ODU. It was the main reason I subscribed. We were actually pretty lucky to have the coverage we did. It’s gone downhill, but so has a lot of coverage for others too.

They have been ok and I understand their position, but we are in NORFOLK,(o wow caps again). We should have priority, after all we are the only FBS in town and the tides and admirals are not playing. Give props to NSU as well. More tv and radio would be nice as well. Have a coaches show here or there or maybe if it is possible, I doubt it would be easy, show a game or two on local tv. I know they have tried. Can't they maybe simulcast an espn3 game? I imagine there would be red tape there. Just random thoughts, anyway odu coverage could be better. I just see greenville and we could learn a thing or two

The comparison of Greenville, a college town built around the college, and one of the larger areas in the US (33rd TV market I believe) is completely absurd.

No it is not have you ever been to greenville? They could easily cover nc state or unc but they do not give them number 1 billing, neither should VP. Calling something absurd because you do not agree is what I call what the world is full of today. Learn to have a conversation not insult

My sense is there are a lot of examples of college sports teams who get less coverage in their hometown paper than more popular college teams in their state or region. I'm sure Furman gets way less coverage in their hometown Greenville, SC paper than does Clemson and USC and Drake probably gets less coverage in their hometown Des Moines paper than Iowa and Iowa State, for instance. It's all about the paper's readership interest.

You are comparing apples to oranges. I tried to find the Daily Reflector's circulation. I could not. Their sports staff is 3 people, one the editor. The VP, at its best, had 19 writers alone, not counting editors (that counted HS) and a circulation in the hundreds of thousands, including people from all over the world (world's largest naval base), PETA HQ. Vastly different audiences, with vastly different interests, which the VP did its best to address. Those days are gone, not to come back. . . . If ODU EVER becomes a program with a national reputation for sports a la UNC, UVA, VT, etc. (it isn't and never has been, mid-major for a reason), things would change. As it is, ODU has been treated very well through the years by the paper.

IIRC, there was an article about the financial difficulties East Carolina is having. Dwindling enrollment, isolated location, very stiff competition with all the nearby ACC schools, especially NC State. One line I particularly remember had to do with lack of local newspaper coverage. More attention given to ACC schools. This just a financial reality. $$ drives the bus

Agree. We only have paper. Maybe another one with a lower circulation focusing on local issues could do better now given the VP pretty much abandoned that concept and now just prints AP articles and some slanted stories regurgitated from a narrative (political, chamber of commerce, bureaucratic, etc.) with little or no real investigation. Can’t imagine anyone could be happy with the VP. Nothing there that can’t be found elsewhere for free.

I don’t disagree with your overall point, but you are also comparing apples to oranges if you are comparing the current sports staff in Greenville to the VP staff at its peak. My understanding is the VP does not currently have any sports staff unless you count the Daily Press. There may be a few exceptions like Jami Frankenberry. But not many. I think they do an OK job considering their limitations. It’s just sad that it has come to this point. I have turned to other sources for sports new.

David Hall is VP, Jamie Frankenberry is VP, Larry Rubama is VP, may have missed one, but can't think of another. A lot of people have lost their jobs and had careers ruined, in all departments.

Had this VP/DP merger taken place years ago and the two papers covered HR as one region instead of letting the tunnel get in their way, you have no idea how much more clout HR would have. A REAL arena would have been built, there would be a major league team in some sport playing here, transpo would be remarkably better and Richmond would pay more attention. It's sad it never happened until it was too late, and only so a hedge fund could suck the marrow from their bones.

The tunnel is a real dividing line though. Maybe in 4 or 5 years when the new tunnel is built it will be different. But right now I would rather drive to Suffolk from Norfolk than go to Hampton or Newport News.

Mid major or not if I wanted to find out about uva or vt. That is fine. ODU should get more ink. I understand they have to cover other universities but you are a norfolk paper.

Yeah My son plays travel soccer and coming from NN I prefer the Richmond games to the VB games. Regionalism is an idealist concept but ruined us in actuality. Thinking of how much better the peninsula would be if Warwick and Elizabeth City counties still existed and were never merged with Newport News and Hampton. The regionalism tag might make nicer spots nicer but it also spreads and multiplies the schitholes

Then odu has to give them a reason to ramp up coverage and position. 1 and 11 football and basketball even the hardcored here say they don't care for ain't doing it. Win and win big.
