(01-31-2021 03:44 PM)billthebighawksfan Wrote:  Please justify not using zone in this game given the circumstances. No good explanation can be made. We could not stop Ray on drive and certainly not Kante with our current personnel or lack there of. And, I know what the coach thinks about playing best players. I just don’t agree at all with it because you gas guys like that with no subs. We had zero pop at the end and did not score a field goal in the final 2 minutes. Need Shy yesterday.

Let me go ahead and get ahead of it for you to what the others will say, it’s ok to lose games this year to teach our system for the future. That about sums it up right guys?

I am glad that even in our current state we still compete every single game

RE: Hawks v. Hofstra
That’s fair and the team played well on offense today. I just left thought that a tactical change was needed late in that game given the circumstances. To me it was a given that they were going to score either with a post up or drive then stick back. Making them shoot from the perimeter seemed like a no brainer.

I understand wanting to play your best players. I don’t usually ever disagree with it. However, if that’s SIX guys and you have two SCHOLARSHIP players sitting on the bench when you gas out your six, that can create problems.

It seems even in a loss though, we were lucky to get away with it. What do I mean by that? When you’re gassing six guys like that, it becomes a lot easier and a lot more likely to sustain an injury. Especially when you’re getting on them to play at 110% for 40 minutes.

We got away with it, IMO. I still think it’s dumb, and with the current state of our team even further causes unnecessary risks.

Further, guys like Dodd need PT to figure if he’s a solution or problem going into next year. You don’t learn a thing with him collecting splinters in his a$$

And, you would think that he matched up the best with Kante physically. At least he theoretically would have to shoot over him. He is a load so I guess coach went with quickness. A combination seemed like a good idea.

All of our championship teams had at least some size to board and paint defend. Going forward it seems we need to get at least one more solid big maybe 2 in addition to McGriff.

I checked the CAA record for consecutive free throws, and it's 45 by VCU's Willie Taylor in 2001-2002. Gadsden has 44, so he could break the record at Elon. The Division I record is 73. I'm going to tweet that to Brian Mull.

So what does that tell you? Why in the world would Siddle keep Dodd on the bench if he clearly had the best size to handle Kante? Does Siddle just want to lose? Personal problem with Dodd?

Or maybe, just maybe, Siddle is trying to ELEVATE the expectations and play of a team that spent two years getting smoked and losing, to one with a winning mentality and winning play? Dodd is clearly not meeting the expectations of Siddle and the coaching staff or he'd be playing on a severly undermanned team. I've told my two girls who've played soccer and volleyball something very simple when they aren't getting PT.

Earn it.

Dodd hasn't earned it. I don't know why, and Siddle doesn't owe me an explanation. I can tell you that the times i've seen Dodd on the court in games, he's very passive and doesn't box out to get position on offense or to get rebounds. He gets pushed around just as much as Boggs, but outweighs him by 50 lbs. He has the body to play, he just doesn't have the fire. I wish he did, because we could sure use him. And i'm sure Siddle wants him too as well. But if he is given PT he hasn't earned, what's going to motivate him to meet the level of play that every other player on the team has? Like it or not, he's doing Dodd a favor. And don't forget, Steere didn't see the court either for the same reason. He didn't earn it.

Doghouse? Remember Chuck? Every time he came in he blocked a few shots and grabbed a few boards yet could never stay in Keatts’s rotation.
But, which is it 82 ? The other day you were beating the drum of playing for next year etc etc . Part of that is seeing what you have in extended game time. If wants to move on from Dodd he needs to do both himself and the player a favor and give him a big enough sample size to make a real judgement. You know, since we are planning for next year and all. As far as the critique of boxing out, that couldn’t be more off. In the limited playing time he’s taken several fouls for boxing out to hard. Plenty to criticize, boxing out ain’t one. We both know practice and games are completely different animals.

RE: Hawks v. Hofstra
I’m not a believer that you have to see what a guy has in games to know what you have. Dodd clearly isn’t showing enough in practice and that’s where you show what you can contribute.

I think Dodd is capable of bringing some useable skills on the defensive end for Siddle, but he offers almost nothing on offense in this scheme. I wish he did, because he could be a pick-n-roll machine. But he doesn’t.

Dodd did play a bit on Saturday, signaling that he is at least not a complete non-factor for this team. Nor do I think he’s in the “doghouse” like Chuck was under Keatts. But i don’t see him playing much a role, if any, without big improvement. Especially not when Shy and Tolefree are ready to go.

Thought BT was cleared to get play? If not, that explains his lack of time.

I did say that, and thinking about it further, Siddle is clearly sending a message to Dodd. When you're his size, and your coach would rather have a rail thin forward play center over you, there's a problem. I figured Siddle would completely shake things up with Sims out, and he didn't. Jenkins didn't play, Dodd barely played, Tolefree didn't play.
He's playing one sub rather than play guys who aren't earning PT.

As far as Chuck, there were obviously issues there with Keatts. Again, Keatts didn't like what he was getting out of him. Cacok also didn't play much when Keatts went to Dylan Sherwood at center, when Getty's fouled out against Duke.

Bottom line is that Siddle is sending a strong message to his bench, when he'd rather go six deep than play you.

Knowing what we know now, I'm willing to give Keatts the benefit of doubt regarding Chuck.

But you can’t deny every single time that dude came in, he contributed. It was well documented here. We gave it a pass because we were winning the CAA, not 1-5. Not suggesting Dodd is Chuck, just saying if we are truly planning for the future he needs more PT so there is a big enough sample size to pass judgement

For who to pass judgement? Us, the fans? Siddle sees and knows more than anybody and he's already passed judgement. That's good enough for me. The little i've seen of Dodd in games, hasn't been impressive.

Dodd impressed the heck out of me C of C on the road last year with his blocks. And, he looked good in a game at home earlier this year. I would love to see him get in the mix. He did okay on the road in that Elon debacle at times last year too. Let’s see what happens?

If you told me after last season that Linssen would transfer and Dodd would hardly play, I would have been shocked.
