UNSUBSTANTIED CHATTER: Charlotte and ODU to A10/Indy

Here is the tweet to the original message board post from the VCU forum

Here is the link and the post
https://www.vcuramnation.com/forums/thre...1/page-166
Quote:Take this for what it is worth...”sources”. I was just told that ODU and Charlotte will join the A10 in 2023-24 in all sports but football where they would join a “consortium of scheduling” with Liberty, UMass, UConn, and Army. Not sure if true but passing it along.

I could see this working out but I just don't know if these 2 will pull the, what is on paper, very risky plug

If true, I’m elated to have ODU finally a part of the conference. I’ve wanted that for ages.

Been there, done that, no thanks for Charlotte.

Again, if true, this is going to test some of those “Sun Belt > CUSA” beliefs. Or, who elects to move, especially if it’s an eastern school, like Appy.

CUSA could slide UAB to the East and continue on pretty seamlessly. And not that I don't believe in ODU or Charlotte's potential but for now at least this would be addition by subtraction for them on the gridiron.

If the A10 is wanting to take two CUSA basketball programs then they should take:

1. ODU
2. Marshall/WKU

Marshall and WKU both average more fans and have had better teams lately. I'm not sure either of us would make the move, but as a Marshall fan, I would definitely be interested in this. I think our average attendance would significantly increase by playing an A10 schedule.

RE: UNSUBSTANTIED CHATTER: Charlotte and ODU to A10/Indy
I’m guessing this rumor (and generated by our board citing another board, citing a 3 yr old editorial) is totally hogwash but I play along for a moment here.

UConn
UMass
Army
JMU
ODU
Liberty
Charlotte

By no means would that group meet the requirements to be a formal FBS conference but it would give each participant 6 games (3 home and 3 away) annually which would go a long way towards maintaining the minimum scheduling requirements set forth by the NCAA—they’d literally just need 1 more FBS home game and 1 FCS one.

I’m throwing JMU into the hypothetical mix because I think they’d consider this group to be peer institutions.

I’d venture to say that ESPN might even guarantee a bowl slot or two from the bowls they own for the top 1-2 teams in this alliance.

I love how a poster/posters can go to multiple messages boards, pull out an old article, then all of a sudden it "chatter across the internet

That’s probably a net positive for CUSA football. They get smaller and lose a pair of their least successful football programs. That means the pie is cut fewer ways....it would of course hit be not great for CUSA basketball, but, so what’s? CUSA would be a one bid league with or without those schools.

If true, CUSA schools will now get a slightly larger slice of the CFP money.

Divisions
West: Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Rice, Southern Miss, UTEP, UTSA
East: Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Marshall, Middle Tennessee St, UAB, Western Kentucky

Not bad.

Looking at other sports (not sure what the bare minimum requirements are for each): Men's Soccer would drop to 6 with 4 conference members and 2 affiliates. Men's Tennis also drops to 6. Women's Swimming & Diving drops to 5.

It was taking over another thread with an entirely different topic. I hate threads like X to the A10 that imply action when there is none. People are clearly interested in talking about this idea

Guess if they are willing to eat the 2 Mill CUSA fee, it would be good. The A10 is holding their conference champion at both Richmond and VCU campuses with 250 fans in 2021. So they would be in the heart of the conference geographically and ODU would be back with old rivals from the CAA. The A10 tourney goes to Washington DC in 2022 and then back to Barclays. Good conference tourney venues.

Marshall/WKU are better programs but A10 is an urban league and wants the footprint to reflect that. Presidents of (mostly east coast) privates want a presence in Charlotte - Huntington and Bowling Green just aren’t places they want a presence in. Charlotte is a former A10 member so relationships are already in place.

Don't total agree here IWULT. St Bonaventure is in friggin Olean. UMass is in western Mass. URI is not in Providence. Davison is outside of Charlotte, but more importantly the 49ers only parked their team in the A10 after getting the boot from CUSA. Think we almost all would prefer Marshall over the 49ers. That is especially true as a FB Indy.

As an A10 fan I’d prefer William & Mary and Delaware and start back up the football league with Richmond, Fordham, URI, Maine, and UNH.

I don't know that Army would be that interested in the scheduling agreement. They could get those other independent schools whenever they wanted, and don't really have a tough time filling a schedule up. They have multiple P5 games every years through 2026, and a fair amount are home games for Army.

is it still 5 million to exit CUSA? thought the amount was tied to the value of the TV contract.

This rumor starting is fun—let’s start one that the America East Conference is starting football with their 4 schools, URI, and Monmouth. Seems plausible and if you repeat it on the internet enough it’ll happen.

Except that the schools that want that the least are the four America East schools.

Why are the AmEast schools with FB opposed to their conference sponsoring the sport?

This is BS. A game of telephone happened.

Almost three years ago Harry Minium wrote an oped column on February 25th, 2018 in the Virginia Pilot. Everything in it was pretty much his free association, throw it against the wall idea to improve ODU's basketball conference situation. He knew the SBC and C-USA realignment would probably go nowhere, so he was plan B-ing it. Everything in this BS rumor came from this article. It's recycled having lost touch with the original source, and assumed to be coming from a mystery source in the know.

Here is the "source"

They are all in a much better conference already, the CAA, for football.
