Of course it's bunk but it's perfect sports message board material to think about. I can't see any other school in the CUSA being able to pull it off outside ODU.

This rumor starting is fun—let’s start one that the America East Conference is starting football with their 4 schools, URI, and Monmouth. Seems plausible and if you repeat it on the internet enough it’ll happen.

Except that the schools that want that the least are the four America East schools.

Why are the AmEast schools with FB opposed to their conference sponsoring the sport?

They are all in a much better conference already, the CAA, for football.

Yes, this is a big part of it. The CAA is a consistent 3+ bid conference and all four schools are competitive.

More importantly for Maine and New Hampshire is the continued access to recruiting in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. Neither school can count on homegrown talent. Being able to market as part of a conference with mid-Atlantic ties is huge. If the conference restricts to a New England-New York bus league, the recruiting footprint gets much smaller and these states aren't exactly football hotbeds.

Why would a guy on a VCU message board 3 years later bring it up.

My bad, the exit fee was 2M. The 5M in my head and incorrectly typed was the A10 media contract.

Thanks Stugray2, and did not remove my add blocker to read it, but trust you. Still it maybe worth noting that by ODU opting out of the football season, it adds some credence to the impression ODU would leave with an A10 invite.

It's somehow tied to ALL conference revenues not just TV so with all the lost revenue the last year from Covid it's probably a good time to leave. Chuck Landon pegged it at 5.6M a few years back.

Maybe he was talking to somebody who remembered that idea, but over a couple years it's source drifted in his mind from an op-ed piece by a sports writer to somebody in one of the schools, but couldn't think of who. A few detail adjustments are probably inferred by the story spreader to fit better the situation today. Presto a "new" rumor.

That is especially true as a FB Indy.

I think Marshall would strongly consider this if it were a realistic option. It would be really hard to pass up A10 hoops.

Well, he was right about UCONN maybe he's right about the rest. It's just funny to me that you take a 3 year old article that says the A10 commissioner told the Norfolk Sports Club that the A10 would welcome ODU and mentions that officials from two other A10 schools say there's been informal discussions. An article that as far as I know really only got any discussion on ODU's message board at the time. And 3 years later this rumor pops up on a VCU message board and instead of thinking maybe those talks have picked up, maybe someone's leaving the A10. Clearly someone read this article and then told someone else that he heard from "source" that this was happening. I might be guilty of wishful thinking and clearly it's just rumors at this point but your confidence that this is the source is a bit much.

mturn017, there has been some speculation concerning LaSalle and they play in a high school gym. Some others but not that seriously.

FWIW, which may not be much, the poster from the VCU board has a pretty solid reputation for insider information. He broke news of VCU in-season tournaments five years in advance, which I didn't think was possible. Even if he has no connections with ODU or Charlotte, if he has ins at VCU then it's certainly possible that people there have talked. College sports folks, be they the AD, coaches or SID, love to talk.

Timing seems odd. Why would it take two and a half seasons for ODU and Charlotte to disentangle from CUSA and join the A-10? We had two major conference expansions announced this month that go live in July. The UConn-AAC divorce didn't take as long. CUSA pivoted pretty quickly when ODU bowed out of football this season, so I don't think adjusting scheduling from 14 to 12 is the hangup. The only thing I can think is that the A-10 knows that schools (Fordham and LaSalle down? Dayton and St. Louis up?) are leaving and that's the expected timeline for those changes. But the A-10 played with 16 teams for one season and sent five teams to the NCAAs, so they can do it if they so desire.

Going indy for 2021 and 2022 for football would be brutal for Charlotte and ODU. 2023 and 2024 would be tough enough.

Going from conference to conference is a lot easier than going from conference to indy

UMass is full for 2021 and 2022, has 1 opening each in 2023 and 2024, and 3 openings in 2025

UConn has 1 opening in each in 2021 and 2022, 3 in 2023, 6 in 2024, and 5 in 2025

Liberty is full until 2025 where they have 2 openings and in 2026 they only have 3 openings

Army has 1 opening in 2023, 2 in 2024, 2 in 2025, and 1 in 2026

BYU has 2 openings in 2022 and 2023, 4 in 2024, and 5 in 2025

NMSU has 1 opening in 2022, 3 openings in 2023, 1 in 2024, and 8 in 2025

I don't doubt the A10 would take Charlotte and ODU if they wanted to make the move, and I dont doubt that long term, they could make suitable schedules like the other independents.

But is leaving CUSA worth the 2 to 3 year scramble of schedule madness and forfeiting CUSA payouts on top of exit fees? For UConn it made sense and I could see it making sense for Charlotte and ODU to join Davidson, Richmond, VCU, and GMU if they really wanted out, but it would be a lot of worker for little to no financial gain.

The current media revenue plus covid year conference payout, including zero ncaa tourney revenue means this is the ideal year to include in an exit fee. ODU has been the most unhappy tenant in CUSA and if they have an opportunity like this they need to jump on it.

Exit fees are intended to keep your best teams in the fold. But they can always be negotiated downward when the members who want to leave aren't so valuable to the conference. If something like this were to actually happen, I could even see CUSA waiving exit fees since they would get a cash benefit just for reducing the number of ways the revenue pie has to be split. This could be the kind of move that is actually beneficial for both conferences.

This was before the ASun started the idea of football and possible FBS. Add them with Liberty? Maybe A10 is out of reach, but ASun is in the footprint.

2021 would be too quick, but UConn managed a respectable schedule in its first year of independence. With a core of independents developing, it'll be easier for ODU and Charlotte to fill out a schedule. I doubt this would happen but if ODU and Charlotte gave notice to CUSA now, they would have a good shot at a full 2022 indy schedule.

RE: UNSUBSTANTIED CHATTER: Charlotte and ODU to A10/Indy
We heard gnashing of teeth from everyone prior to my alma mater Liberty getting our waiver. But truthfully scheduling was actually much easier than most folks predicted. With less Indies to schedule, we had a couple of years of home-and-homes with NMSU. But otherwise it worked out nicely in relatively short order.

The fear of Indy scheduling is much greater than the reality based on the increased number of scheduling options.
