The three legs of the stool that is UNCW basketball
Coach Siddle has the same system as Keatts did. His gameplan relies on shooting the three ball well, stopping the other team from shooting the three ball well, and winning the TO margin battle.
Five games in, we are doing well in two of the three areas, and failing misreably in the other.
3 pt. defense - UNCW #1
3 pt. offense .270 - UNCW #9
TO margin +7.4 - UNCW #1
We've lost by 3, 4, 5 and 9 points. If we were shooting 35% instead of 27%, here's how it would have changed our record.
1. Towson L 72-69 we went 6-19 from three(31.6%). One more three pointer sends us to OT
2. Towson L 78-74 we went 7-25(28%). at 35%, we would have made two more three pointers, which would lead to an 80-78 win.
3. Delaware W 77-70. we went 6-18 from three(33.8%). No statistical change
4. Delaware L 67-62 we went 3-20 from three(15%). at 35%, we would have made four more three pointers and won this one 74-67
5. Hofstra L 82-73 we went 8-29 from three(27.6%), at 35% we would have made two more threes and lost 82-79
We attempt 22 three pointers per game, which is #3 in the CAA. Our three point shooting makes or breaks our team. Shooting 35% from three is the same as shooting just over 50% from inside the arc.
If that third leg of the stool was working, and we could shoot just 35% from three(that would put us at #4 in the CAA), our record could be 3-2 and maybe 4-1. Hitting threes also allows us to get in our press and maybe get a stop on the other end, so the impact is more than the missing points.
Yes, I know the stats on rebounding and that is a problem. But it's not an area of focus in a Siddle system. We give up some things to be better at others, and three point shooting is a must in a Siddle system.

I think the ball movement yesterday was encouraging, as it allowed more open looks. Less contested 3’s will lead to more makes.
Boggs isn’t going to shoot 0-7 from 3 again anytime soon. Harvey will get more open looks as well.

You gave your percentage only in CAA games. You shot threes .372 in nonconference games, and your season percentage is .335.
Do you have any guesses as to why you're shooting threes worse in CAA games?
Division I shoots twos .5066 and threes .3388. Shooting twos .5066 is like shooting threes .3377, so the points per shot from twos and threes are almost identical.

Probably some familiarity with our system among CAA coaches, plus the back to backs give opponents additional looks.
In addition, our non conference slate wasn’t particularly daunting. It included a non-DI game as well.

The other part is our CAA opponents could look at non conference and see who they need to cover from three. Sims was on fire from three in non conference and fell dramatically in CAA games. Gadsden just hasn't had one of "those" games. This back to back format is really tough for our team with so many players out. The return of Phillips would help a lot.

Y’all may have covered it elsewhere, so apologies in advance, but I see only played 6 men today and 7 yesterday...? No Phillips or Dodd?
I recall some solid freshmen recruits, but are they injured/COVID? Harvey I think
Florida transfer statically looks like he is playing well again this season for y’all

Dodd is in the doghouse for some reason. Phillips was hurt in the off season and developed an infection with the injury. It looks like he may be coming back soon. Harvey is a freshman. He’s had some flashes of greatness and flashes of freshman. His defense is very strong though, so I think the rest will come along.
Okauru (FL transfer) is playing great ball this year. He and Pridgeon (Holy Cross transfer) are a really strong combo.

I think it’s a combination of a several things.
1. CAA teams play a lot of physical basketball. Teams like Towson love playing a half court game and slowing the game down to the pace they want to play. Not making shots or getting early turnovers forces our system to get swallowed up by theirs. The CAA teams are a lot different than the OOC schedule we played. I don’t feel like our OOC games adequately prepped us for the conference games.
2. Lack of size. If teams can pound the ball inside, there’s less “long” rebounds for our guards to jump at and put on the run. If the rebounds are shorter, in the paint, our lack of size is exposed and it’s either an easy put back for other CAA teams or we have to settle back into a grueling half court defense, again... undersized.
3. Others have already said it, but CAA coaches that were around for the Keatts years recognize it and scheme against it.
4. A lack of depth. Our shortened bench means more used and tired legs. That leads to less quality shots.
Those are my reasons.

It’s not just as simple as increasing a % and saying it’s a W or a loss. A few more threes made and closer games changes a lot of things that could go either way.
As CG so finely pointed out, playing his system requires depth, depth we don’t have for a number of reasons. Injuries, a few failed recruits etc, not trusting a few guys he does have. Tired legs typically leads to worse shooting performances
