But will this help our precipitously dropping U.S. News rank? 05-stirthepot

What is this "precipitous" drop? And when was the last "ranking"?

Might be the result of our going test optional.

That's pretty much everyone though.

My guess is Virginia seniors are looking to say in Virginia given the pandemic. Or, it could be more students who expect to study online.

It will be interesting to see what our yield is. That is, how many acceptances must we send out to get the 1,600 kids in our freshman class.

Many California schools climbed up the ranking aided by pell grant metric.

Research also plays a role. WM is simply not going to be a 50,000 person school with a huge emphasis on research, and that's fine by me, even if US News and World Report doesn't like it

RE: W&M News
We dropped 7 spots? Is that significant? In the Flat Hat article, the '87 alum saying he was worried about it devaluing his diploma... lol. How is he gonna get partner now? I mean, I get that it can't be 7 spots every year or W&M will have long-term problems, but dropping once because the criteria were changed isn't really a crisis.

Yale University also reported "record" number of applications - they have 43,000 Applicants compared with the "record" 17,000 for W&M - however, an "Application" in 2021 should not be compared with an "Applicant" from previous years - this is because the system of applying to a college has been drastically changed because of the growing use of the "Universal Application" process - basically, this new process allows a student to complete a single application form and to have it submitted to multiple schools effortlessly. Also, many schools are no longer requiring aptitude test results which means that many more applicants are "qualified" for admission than in the past.

RE: W&M News
Also a part of it is the acceptance rate which has been creeping up lately is now 38% I believe. It used to be in 32%-34% relatively recently. The yield has been dropping for the out of state students because W&M cannot meet all the financial needs of many of these students. The number of applicants has been relatively flat for a number of years and W&M has had to admit more students to fill the class due to lack of scholarship money which has lowered the yield. The acceptance rate should drop meaning W&M will be more selective with the higher number of applicants which should help to improve the rankings.

43,000 seems low for Yale. Boston U. reported 61,007 applicants for 3,000 slots in the Class of 2024. With the Common App, test optional and the complete subjectivity of high school grading these days, why not roll the dice and apply everywhere?

I will share an admittedly completely anecdotal experience. We live in Virginia. My daughter is a HS Senior and has applied to nine schools (Penn State, Pitt, Tennessee, Carnegie Mellon, Georgia, Clemson, UVA, Va Tech, and JMU). She had zero interest in applying to dad's alma mater 03-pissed.

She had little interest in applying in-state and not much interest in attending a school in-state, but we required her to at least apply. Her preference has always been Penn State, both pre-Covid and during. She has already been accepted at Penn State, Pitt, and Tennessee, and has an interview with Carnegie Mellon tomorrow. We are still awaiting decisions from the other schools before she makes her final selection - but it will not be in Virginia. (As a side note - some out of state colleges now offer students from this area essentially in-state tuition rates to attract students. Tennessee as an example offered her - as well as two of her friends from this area - a $24,000 tuition discount over 4 years to attend, making the tuition comparable to many Virginia schools. My understanding is South Carolina and Georgia do similar.)

Most of her friends and teammates applied to a large number of schools (7+) as well, or what seems like a large number to me from when I applied. Many of them also applied to schools out of state. She worked with a College Application Tutor this year, and speaking with that individual, she said that most of her students were applying to more schools than usual as a result of not being able to visit in-person. I will say though that her high school has done an admirable job of scheduling virtual college visits for the seniors.

I guess this is a long way of saying that because she wasn't able to visit schools she just added some to her list just in case, and with the flexibility of "The Common App" she was able to apply to many schools at the same time - most out of state. My hunch is these similar themes contributed to the increase in the number of applicants this year at W&M.

My guess is we'll see a divide into the haves/have nots. The haves will see a boost in admissions, but I could see a lot of smaller colleges that rely less on name brand and more on getting high schoolers to tour struggle. A lot of small schools are hurting financially, and may not be able to offer the same aid packages they used to, as well

Lots of small schools with low name recognition, small endowments, poor graduation rates, high dependence on student aid, etc. will go out of business. Can parents in VA really support Radford, Hollins, Bridgeport, Longwood, etc?

Not familiar with Bridgeport? Where is that? Some schools will go away. But some of those were already in trouble pre-pandemic and pre-nation financial crisis.

Florida, UC San Diego, UC Irvine, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara higher than us? This ranking stuff is a joke. Also, I noticed UVA's ranking took a dive too.

UVA’s relatively small portion of low-income Pell Grant students hurt UVA in a new measure, “social mobility.” With data from federal Pell Grants, that metric evaluates how well schools serve low-income students. UVA tied at No. 328. By comparison, UCLA sits at No. 13, Berkeley is No. 70 and Michigan comes in at No. 291.
