We used this against them and set up a great option. We were in shotgun and trips to the right with a TE and set the RB to the weak side. In a stroke of genius, we covered the TE and pulled the single SE off the ball and motioned him to the trips side. The TE was covered and ineligible but the FS had him man anyway. The backside corner went with the SE motion because they were in straight man (cover 0). The y blitzed the middle LB up the middle like they liked to do. The result is that the weak DE had to cover both the QB and the RB on a weak side option. It went for 15 yards a pop. The chain gang heard them on the sidelines asking what the hell was going on. They couldn't figure it out and when they went in at half they adjusted to a 5-2 cover 3 and we just went back to throwing the ball.

And I bet you wore the DE out, which improved your passing game as well

Before indicting the Chronicle, I would want confirmation that the Rice Athletic Department fed them information through a press release. I don’t see anything on riceowls.com about the football signing class, either.

It's inexcusable. A complete blunder on Rice's behalf.

The Chronicle does have a cover of the Sports page article today on the football recruiting class.

Well, I got an email yesterday from the Athletic Dept. saying signing day was here. I guess the Chronicle didn't get the email.

I realize major print media doesn't do any real reporting any longer. They only regurgitate what they are fed. My point was Rice is so irrelevant in its own home town that 1) Rice didn't bother to send the Chronicle anything to regurgitate or 2) Rice did and the Chronicle chose to not include it in their recruiting summaries. Either way it's sad.

Matthew Bartlett at The Roost must have gotten the email as well. He at least had some discussion of Rice's recruiting class.

When I worked at the Post back in the 70s, both Houston dailies had a full-time sports reporter on the Rice beat. Full-time. The Chronicle had Joe McLaughlin, and the Post had Jack Agness (who also covered occasional golf tournaments). It was a totally different era.

For the umpteenth time, none of this lack of coverage can be blamed on the SID. First of all, nowadays the SID hast to wear many more hats. All Bill Whitmore needed was a mimeograph machine. The SID now has to double as a publicist and an originator of news, photos, videos, interviews, radio shows, TV shows, and on and on.

God rest his soul, Bill Whitmore ran his little fiefdom, and got really jealous and spiteful if anybody didn’t play his game exactly the way he wanted it. I remember KTRU had a sports reporter, Bill Synamon, who had a voice that was absolutely golden. We arranged to get a dedicated phone line from KTRU to the crows nest press box in Autry. This, just to do freshman basketball games, as Bill of course did the varsity games. He was so jealous of Synamon that he kicked us out of the press box. I had a personal run in with Bill over the firing of Bo Hagan, too involved to relate here; the punchline was a phone call to Bill from Denne H Freeman, head of Associated Press in Texas, warning him to quit picking on KTRU, they were only doing their job. (Years later, we kissed and made up.)

RE: 2021 football schedule unveiled
We didn't sign anyone new in football on the February signing day. I thought we filled the class back in December (there are now 2 signing days in football). I mean, we may still get (or lose) a transfer here or there, but I don't think we're recruiting any more high school class of 2021 football players (outside of the preferred walk-ons)??

I'd also add that complaining about lack of coverage in the Chronicle these days is akin to complaining that myspace or AOL is down.

Wow!! That's terrible!

I broadcast freshman basketball games from the crows nest one year. Must have been the year before you & Bill Synnamon.

I don't remember having any issues with "The Barber" ... although I did (privately) snicker at all the "quote marks" he put around a wide variety of phrases in his news releases.

OK, Mike, well here’s the story…

It was a dingy evening in early November 1969 as I trudged from Lovett college after dinner toward the basement of the RMC, where, as newly appointed News Director at KTRU, I was setting up the evening newscast. Walked past the training table which was in front of the Baker Commons, as you will recall, and about four or five football buddies of mine exploded out and surrounded me. “Hlavinka, Hlavinka, you’ve got to take us down to the radio station and let us say something. Hagan has been fired.“ It was basically the Lovett college sophomore backfield, Kim Malone, Jackie Laurenzo, Mike Spruill, Cliff Crabtree, and I’m sure Jim Miller was in on the mix. We went down to KTRU and I just opened the mic, and we had a quick on the air session. Those boys were all good friends of mine. I remember sitting drinking a beer with Jim Miller on the front steps at Lovett once, watching our college fellows walk by, and Jimmy saying “I can’t understand it, WE are the normal people.“ Anyway, they had their say, and then I put a bulletin out on the AP saying Hagan had been fired, etc. etc. My uncle Charlie was driving from Texarkana up to St. Louis for a law case and listening on KMOX when he heard our family name being announced on 1120 radio. 15 seconds of fame. Anyway, Bill was absolutely fire breathing. He had had a press conference arranged for 9 o’clock the next morning, and had everything choreographed, and this ruined the whole thing. “I’ll make sure you never do that again! I’m going to call AP and get you thrown out and get that wire machine taken out of your junk radio station basement!” I was shocked. I was just responding to my pals on the football team. Geez, we’re students… Anyway, he did call AP and tried to get us kicked out, and the machine removed. The next afternoon I was in the KTRU news room and I got a call from Mr. Freeman, the AP head man in Fort Worth. He said, “don’t you worry a bit about Mr. Whitmore. I explained to him that you all are a regular member of AP and that you have a contractual duty to report the news, and that you were just doing your job. If you ever have any problems with him again, you just give me a call and I’ll take care of it.” Oh, so seldom in life do we get to savor little victories like that! So I stayed on Bill’s bad side for about I don’t know 15 or 20 years, but as he slowed down in his old age, we realized our common bonds, and I wound up pushing him around the concourse at Rice Stadium in his wheelchair. I cried at his funeral.

It's not a bad home schedule. We get UH, TSU, North Texas, Louisiana Tech, and Southern Miss in Rice Stadium.

The break before UTSA is timely. I have UTSA and UTEP targeted as big road wins for us this year, possibly Charlotte.

Bull Sh-tmore, we used to refer to him as. Not really fair - he did the best he could with limited resources.

What did the Lovett gang have to say about Hagan's firing ? Happy, or sad ? IMO He was the epitome of an arrogant, my way or the highway egomaniac - who was all about himself and who started the downhill slide of RU football fortunes after Neely left. He was looking for an excuse to demote you, even if the guy behind you was a turd, just to prove he was the boss. He'd put you at 5th string at a position on the posted depth chart, when there was nobody in the 3rd or 4th string slots - a real chickensh-t. Nobody wanted to play for him, which is a shame because we had some real talent on that 1970 team. I started my last two years, and was drafted, btw, so this isn't sour grapes about being relegated to the bench, or some such.

RE: 2021 football schedule unveiled
The big problem with the schedule is that there is a 6 week period in the middle of the season during which Rice will play just 1 home game.

I guess it depends when you are starting and ending that 6 week period. Even if you start on the Sunday after Southern Miss and the Friday before WKU (both home games), you have a 1 home game, 3 away, and a bye. Isn't the worst thing.

Okay - I'll amend. 40 days with 1 home game.

Incredibly limited resources. Did more with less than most anyone I have ever known.

As opposed to the person you mention in the following, who did less with more than anyone I have ever known.

Let's just say that you have expressed a much higher regard for Bo Hagan in that paragraph than I happen to hold.

Well, it’s been a while, but as I recall, they had a negative opinion of him said they’d be much better off without him.and felt like that they were just going to take the rest of the season up on their own shoulders. They were one and six at the time with only a win over VMI. First game after Hagan, they beat A&M 7 to 6 in Rice Stadium. Mike Spruill SWC player of the week. Then they lost 21-17to a Norm Bulaich-led TCU team in Fort Worth, and then finished the season beating Baylor badly at Rice. Self-vindication.

RFN, I think you are conflating the 1969 and 1970 seasons. The 1969 team was 1-6, and then beat aTm, lost to TCU, and blew out Baylor. But Bo left the following year, in 1970. That team was 2-5 when his termination was announced. The team decided they would be much better off without him, took the rest of the season on their own shoulders, and beat aTm 18-17, TCU 17-15, and Baylor 28-23, to finish 5-5. I worked with BOT for several years, and we have discussed this story a few times over the years.

One sort of quirky thing about the 1970 season is that in 5 of the first 6 games, the losing team failed to score.

CBS Sports Network released their 2021 football schedule today. The Bayou Bucket game will on that network and will be a 5:30 pm start. That's our only televised appearance on that particular network (unless they announce more games at a later date).

69/70/75, I just stumbled across this. You were absolutely right it was ‘70. That means Jack Laurenzo could not have been in that training table group, as he had left Rice after two years. And Spruill’s back of the week honors did come in the previous year. I remember we put up a big cartoon poster taped to the front of his Lovett college room that said “Aggie killer“. Picture of Mike with the poster on the front page of Chronicle sports the next day. Great fun. Different year. But I think the rest of the story pretty well holds.

Exclamation RE: 2021 football schedule unveiled
This year's football schedule is decent for us by recent year standards as far as home games potentially putting some butts in seats to watch the opponents. Why we don't try to play the 2 SEC Mississippi schools more is a mystery. We should be able to draw some of their fans to watch them beat us here at HRS and make a little more cash.

I'm glad it's an evening game.
