RE: 2021 football schedule unveiled
Outside the top six bowl games, none of them are noteworthy. No one really cares. None of them are a big deal. They're all rather meaningless. It's just fun as a fan to be able to go to one, or to watch your team play in one on national television. It's exciting on a micro level. That being said, a bowl game should be part of almost every season at Rice. It's a barometer. There are so many now that not making one is considered a failure.

Notice anybody missing? The Chronicle didn’t.

Before indicting the Chronicle, I would want confirmation that the Rice Athletic Department fed them information through a press release. I don’t see anything on riceowls.com about the football signing class, either.

It's inexcusable. A complete blunder on Rice's behalf.

Well, I got an email yesterday from the Athletic Dept. saying signing day was here. I guess the Chronicle didn't get the email.

I realize major print media doesn't do any real reporting any longer. They only regurgitate what they are fed. My point was Rice is so irrelevant in its own home town that 1) Rice didn't bother to send the Chronicle anything to regurgitate or 2) Rice did and the Chronicle chose to not include it in their recruiting summaries. Either way it's sad.

Matthew Bartlett at The Roost must have gotten the email as well. He at least had some discussion of Rice's recruiting class.

RE: 2021 football schedule unveiled
It says something about our conference that we could be ranked 'worse than' 100... meaning one of the 30 worst teams in the country... and still win 6-7 games and play in a bowl without a single upset.

That is the advantage AND the problem.

The advantage is that you can win and go bowling... the problem is that you will likely either get killed in the bowl or you will be playing a game that nobody cares about.... against another school that nobody cares about.

So to me once again, its not about going to bowls or winning CUSA... but about being 'pretty good'. If you are 'pretty good' you will certainly have some games against other pretty good g5 teams that few care about, but you will also have games against some 'pretty good' p5 teams... SOME of whom will be national names or massive state schools who just happen to be having a down year. Play well against them and suddenly people know you... and they start thinking... Hey, you know I'd love for my son to go to State, but if he doesn't get a scholarship offer there, Rice might be a really cool spot for him. My 'loyalty to state' isn't questioned because I can brag about my son going to Rice... and still playing competitive football.... and if things go right, he can grad transfer to state.

Winning CUSA at least right now doesn't mean you're a top 50-70 team, which is what it takes to TRY and compete against 'down' state schools.... and though I don't ever see it... If CUSA suddenly had 4 top 50 teams, we could STILL be 'pretty good' and not even finish in the top 2 of our division.... MAYBE not win 6.

Be pretty good and let the results work themselves out.

Now for a really off-the-wall idea...
Rather than try and FIGHT the transfer merry-go-round, especially in basketball... we EMBRACE it. We decide that we're going to get great 'teaching' coaches and develop close relationships with places like Duke or UT... almost like a feeder school to their systems... and then after a few years of some good teams who lose lots of players each year... giving lots of playing time to freshmen... we start working on trying to keep more of those guys and make it on our own. This likely means you're changing the style of play away from a 'team' concept and more to one of 'isolation', but that's not an uncommon style... especially for 'one and done' NBA guys. I'll admit to not having thought through this much... but there has to be SOME way for a school like Rice to take advantage of the increasing rate of transfers. Start working on how to get guys their degrees in 3.5 years and they don't have to sit out.... and then work with the graduate departments to find ways to get incoming grad transfers as well.

Someone asked what you would do as AD?? You all know a lot of what I'd do... I've said it a lot...

But the BIGGEST things I'd do is focus on marketing Rice athletics to people most likely to value Rice University. Instead it seems like we've spent most of our time trying to capture the table scraps from p5... the guy so interested in football or basketball that he'll watch #75 vs #74 (or 101 vs 108) if its a 'good' game.... or because we have great concessions or a fun band... That to me just seems so far down the spectrum that we'd be lucky to get 1% of an admittedly massive cohort. Instead I'd want to try and get guys who perhaps went to Harvard or WashU... or guys who went to Tech and if their kids don't get the nod at Tech, would attend Rice over Kansas so they could say they made the 'academic' choice.... but STILL played football. Eventually you hope to get to the point where a few people are picking Rice if they don't get the nod at UT instead of taking Tech. Maybe the son of the guy who didn't get in to Rice on academics who instead went to Tech... and now their son can get in to Rice. They like seeing the nerds win.

It's like we're trying to be UH or UTSA or SFA instead of Rice... and that makes ZERO sense to me

Very good points. We complain about the transfer rules, but the reality is before this became rampant Harvard, Princeton, William and Mary etc. were coming into Autry/Tudor and putting the wood to us anyway. Maybe we should accept and embrace this and try to gain an advantage.

I do think we get great traction in football from the type of element you describe, but we get so much late "plucking" of recruits who fill out senior year it gets masked. Maybe Hatfield was onto something not ever showing his recruiting hand.

RE: 2021 football schedule unveiled
Last season, HBU set an NCAA record for most passing yards by an FCS team against an FBS team, when the Huskies went for 567 at Texas Tech. Their quarterback, Bailey Zappe, also threw for 480 at North Texas, and 406 at Louisiana Tech.

The architect of that Air Raid Offense, offensive coordinator Zac Kittley was hired by Western Kentucky head coach Tyson Helton to be the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Also making the move to WKU are Zappe and HBU's 3 leading receivers.

Rice, with it's 19th century "Intellectual Brutality" offense, plays WKU's 21st century offense on November 13.

We used to put up tons of yardage in the Tommy Kramer days.

They lost to Tech 35-33... going 96 yards in their last drive... missing a 2 pt try to tie it AT Tech... who in their next game took UT to OT, losing 63-56.

Wish WE could have played Tech OR UT.

I know. And TT was 108th in scoring defense last year. The Pirate's Air Raid stunned LSU in the opener, and was then pretty much shut down by a succession of teams that rushed 3 and dropped 8. I watched them struggle against Arkansas, while thinking that it was a shame that they didn't have the run side of the old Hawaii offense to go with their Air Raid. A couple of option plays would have ripped off 10-15 yards a pop, or more, and forced Arkansas out of that scheme. Then the passing game would have worked like a champ. Like any one-dimensional offense, the Air Raid can be stopped. When you can run AND pass effectively, it is a different proposition.

I know RUOwls likes to talk about passing to set up the run. But to do that you need to have a run to set up. Some Air Raid teams don't bother, and that hurts them against good defenses. You can pass to score, but sometimes you have to run to win.

Amateurs....
If they were really good they would gone INTO Tech and missed the 2 pt try to tie only to come back and kick a 57 yard FG for the win.

Just for the record, when I was a HS OC, we set our HS individual single game passing yardage record (457 yards which had stood for almost 20 years) and a couple weeks later set the single game individual rushing record (297 yards). So, I know how to call both passing AND run plays.
In other words, I know how to coordinate an offense, thank you.

And, I once called 11 straight running plays. Shocking, I know.

Not shocking at all, because you appreciate the need for both.

How many of those games did HBU win?

HBU is FCS and only in its 7th year of football. They lost by 2 at Texas Tech (P5) and at North Texas and at Louisiana Tech.

Of note:
(1) Rice hasn't defeated a P5 team on the road since a 1 point win at 1-11 Kansas in 2012. That's the only one over the past 23 seasons.

(2) Rice has lost its last 6 games against Louisiana Tech, including a couple of embarrassing losses (61-16, 76-31).

(3) Rice has lost 4 of its last 5 to North Texas, including a home loss in 2020.

But sure, let's not try something different.

Taking what they give you?

Well if they offer it up.....Why not take it?

Rice had a good SID when Bill Whitmore was it. Back in the 1960s the Rice game was the lead story on Sunday sports section.

Notice anybody missing? The Chronicle didn’t.

Before indicting the Chronicle, I would want confirmation that the Rice Athletic Department fed them information through a press release. I don’t see anything on riceowls.com about the football signing class, either.

We once played a pretty good defense team who ran a 5-3 Cover 0. They came at you and pretty much blitzed every down.
We used this against them and set up a great option. We were in shotgun and trips to the right with a TE and set the RB to the weak side. In a stroke of genius, we covered the TE and pulled the single SE off the ball and motioned him to the trips side. The TE was covered and ineligible but the FS had him man anyway. The backside corner went with the SE motion because they were in straight man (cover 0). The y blitzed the middle LB up the middle like they liked to do. The result is that the weak DE had to cover both the QB and the RB on a weak side option. It went for 15 yards a pop. The chain gang heard them on the sidelines asking what the hell was going on. They couldn't figure it out and when they went in at half they adjusted to a 5-2 cover 3 and we just went back to throwing the ball.
