RE: JMU Spring 2021 Football preseason
It's going to be interesting seeing the game on TV Saturday with BFS and Showker Field looking like "the frozen tundra". Lots of snow and ice expected tomorrow that will be pushed back to the sides/ends of the field on Friday and then the game will be played with sub-freezing temps as Saturday won't get above freezing per the forecasts.
Though not used to saying it in mid-February... "that's football weather". :>)

Weather that favors a team with a big OL that prefers to run the ball.

Temperature wise it will be like some of the home playoff games at BFS the last couple of years. As far as the snow/ice that will be interesting!!
Go Dukes!!

Wow, in his interview with Bob Black at ESPN Richmond, Cignetti said there hasn't been much tackling/contact in winter practices so he's eager to get to the games because that's where we'll really evaluate the team.
I would emphasize how important these two cupcake games are right now. We cannot afford to have them be cancelled.

A bit concerned about the possibility of injuries if there is ice on the field. Hope we have a good way to clear this stuff off or the temps go higher than forecast.

I think we will see evidence of “bone crunching” hits Saturday with it being so cold and on frozen turf. They might as well be playing on concrete. Thankfully it isn’t a night game as the low is forecast to be 8 degrees.
Morehead State is going to get beat up pretty bad, but JMU could get exposed to injuries too with unforgiving field conditions.
I’d much rather play a game in 100 degree late Summer temps than during a Winter cold snap among Ice and Snow residue.

The field will be cleared and in good condition to play on. The university has all the necessary equipment to prepare the field for play. And don’t forget, it’s a new rug in BFS. Unless there is snow or other precipitation during the game it will only be a matter of dealing with the cold.

RE: JMU Spring 2021 Football preseason
OT but CAA related: Craig Haley is reporting Elon's starting QB from 2019, Davis Cheek, is out for the entire spring season with injury. He may return in the fall.
Joey Baughman, a redshirt sophomore, will be the starter for Elon. Elon was projected to be JMU's toughest opponent this spring, so lacking their several season starting QB is a big deal.

+1
Also, the sun is supposed to make what has been seemingly a rare appearance this Friday afternoon and the temps will be above freezing for a few hours during that time. Should get some decent melting going on before freezing back over tonight and all day tomorrow. Could be a little slick on the field so won't be surprised to see the hash marks on Showker Field make a few tackles (by either team). Dukes will take care of business. Looking forward to see our QB's perform. Running game should be strong. Same recipe as season's past IMO. Build a huge lead by half and then get the starters out in the 2nd. Maybe a series or two (at most) in 3Q, but get them out and avoid injuries.

Just went by BFS the field is cleared of snow, looks great JMU maint has hauled it all away. They know how to clear Showker Field for a winter game.

Well stated. I am less concerned on injuries due to the weather and more so based on duration of time between games and live action, to me the adrenaline and level/duration of action is what concerns me early. Hoping for an injury free weekend with enough of a view of our team to see some of the new pieces.

Actually, not only do we need to stay healthy, in this bizarre season we need our opponents to stay healthy to even have games. And have enough games to “be eligible” as Bourne alludes to, because what if 2 of our CAA opponents lose a game and decide to opt out of the rest of the season and we ony have a couple games in? Look at some of these basketball teams going weeks without games, now multiply the roster by 8 or so.
Back then I feared a bad stretch knocking a couple games out and then the teams with no hope opting out...we just need our division to hold it together just a little more...

And so much for that. It’s turned into take your ball, run and hide. If you’re losing then call it a season, if you’re winning then pack it in like Richmond, call it a wrap and wait for the playoffs. All cowards. Would you want players on your team that don’t want to compete? If you’re a player do you want to play for a coach that doesn’t want you to compete? For as cowardice as it is to opt out, I find Richmond worse in that they want to play for a playoff run but don’t want to play us. I hope they either get absolutely demolished or left out of the playoffs as an undefeated and scared team.

Pretty easy to sit back and judge the situations of all of these schools opting out. COVID sucks. Not as much as Richmond sucks... but everything about this spring football experiment has sucked.
