Opt out?
So the LR ladies 2 best players (2 leading scorers) have opted out for the season. What does that even mean at this point? Will they be back next year? I believe the NCAA allowed players to "opt out" of this season with the ability to get this year back. Can't imagine it applies to players who opt out with a month left in the regular season. A couple of more girls opt out and we'd have little choice but to cancel the rest of the season. Maybe joining Duke, Virginia, Vandy, etc. wouldn't be a bad idea.

RE: Opt out?
That would be interesting to know. It appears the NCAA is giving everyone almost a blank check this year.

RE: Opt out?
I'm not really surprised because we lost 2 weeks of basketball due to covid issues within our program. It's the second time this year we had to cancel games because of it. Certainly not fun to play off and on all season.

Just hoping this won't happen to the men's team (knock on wood).

Do they lose their scholarships when they just quit? They should.

RE: Opt out?
There's a rumor floating around social media Scott also entered the transfer portal. Not sure if there's any truth to that, but that's what I saw. I understand opting out, but why transfer?

My thought, when I heard this, was that she was gone (i.e. both were gone). Why opt out now, if you are happy where you are? Can't be good feelings between the coach and players at this point in time. I'd be surprised if we see either player in a LR uniform again. Hope I am wrong, but you don't leave at this point unless you are really unhappy.

I guess it is possible the Covid situation just freaked them out and they decided to stop putting themselves at risk.

Addendum- I didn't know there was a women's transfer portal you could go to on the internet. I just found it and it lists Bre'Amber Scott. So it is not a rumor.

RE: Opt out?
There are numerous reasons why players transfer. They don't like the coach, school, playing time, teammates, system, etc. are just a few. When a player transfers for the second time, I start to wonder about that particular player- do they not get along with others, have issues with authority figures, or are simply unhappy in most any situation. All we know in the present case is that playing time was not an issue here.

Yeah I know players are starting to enter the transfer portal more and more in the middle of the season these days, was curious why our top scorer would leave mid-way through the season. Will be interesting if we ever hear a reason as to why she's leaving the program.

Just a guess but didn’t she not start the last two games she played in after starting the first 7? Not everyone is tough enough to play for Joe, maybe she wouldn’t buy in to something and decided to leave. In my opinion the Covid is just a good excuse for her to leave mid season and transfer and Hope to still have 2 years left somewhere since the NCAA is pretty much letting the players do whatever they want this year. I am not trying to criticize Scott, just make observations.

Joe is definitely not easy to play for. The girls who stick it out certainly end up better for it. But he is not for everyone.

I am not 100% sure but when my kids played in college if one of their teammates quit the scholarship went on through the rest of that semester. This was NAIA so I’m not sure that translates to D1 but I bet they keep them through end of the semester. I agree with you though, if they quit the money should stop. They are “ working for their scholarship “ through playing and if they are not playing they shouldn’t get the benefits.

You have more real life information than I do. I would've guessed that their tuition, for the semester, is already taken care of and they can finish the classes they started. I would think tutors, and the like, are probably off the table. Don't know about housing/food, but with Scott being from Little Rock, I would bet she just went back home. This may be mostly irrelevant right now, because I bet most are taking online classes at this point. I do wonder if the current "opt out" option complicates things, but the reality appears to be that she simply "quit".

I wasn't aware she did not start the last 2 games. This certainly suggests there were some "issues" between her and the coach. Like you, I don't want to "blame" a player, but considering what Joe has done for our program I'd lean to taking his "side".

I agree mjs, I’m with Joe. We’ve had players before that couldn’t do things Joe expected.

RE: Opt out?
How often do a team's 2 leading scorers quit at the same time? Not sure I have ever seen it before at any level. Typically leading the team in scoring (or second in scoring) is enough to keep a player "happy" even if they don't like some things about their situation. At least, happy enough to wait until the end of the season.
