Clyburn says George W. Bush called him ‘the savior’ for endorsing Biden
Quote:Former President George W. Bush called House Majority Whip James Clyburn “the savior” for his endorsement of Joe Biden in last year’s presidential primary, the Democratic lawmaker revealed.

Speaking to reporters during a press call Wednesday after the swearing in of the 46th commander-in-chief, Clyburn (D-SC) revealed that Bush made the comments to him directly that morning as they awaited the start of the inauguration.

“George Bush said to me today, he said, ‘You know, you’re the savior because if you had not nominated Joe Biden, we would not be having this transfer of power today,'” the No. 3 House Democrat said after being asked what he was thinking as he watched President Biden being sworn in.

“He said to me that Joe Biden was the only one who could have defeated the incumbent president,” Clyburn continued.

The House majority whip said that while he was sitting there watching Biden take the oath of office, he thought of his late wife, Emily Clyburn, who passed away due to complications from diabetes in September 2019 at age 80.

Because she was ill at the time of the 2019 Democratic primary, Clyburn’s better half was unable to join him at his annual fish fry, an event attended by nearly every candidate — including Biden.

Clyburn told the story of their conversation that evening when he returned home from the event, quoting his wife as saying, “No matter how many people are in this race, our best chance of winning the presidency is to nominate Joe Biden.”

It was Clyburn’s endorsement of Biden in the South Carolina Democratic presidential primary that revived his candidacy and catapulted him back to front-runner status following dismal showings in Iowa and New Hampshire.

Biden’s ascent to the nomination is largely credited to his dominating performance in South Carolina.

A representative for the 43rd president did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.

Evidence?

Bloomberg and Warren would’ve had about the same chances as Biden, imho. Bloomberg with his $$$ (could’ve outspent the Biden and Trump campaigns combined without breaking a sweat, or having to do any fundraisers). Warren with her ability to forcefully speak to the issues of middle-class and working-class decline.

True, Biden was less-obviously beholden to the Extreme-Left agenda than they are, and that would’ve been a problem. But they had other advantages that Biden didn’t have, too.

And of course, neither of them would’ve had to overcome Biden’s handicap of dementia.

But both would have had to overcome the problems of having had perhaps the worst two primary performances in modern history. They did that badly for reasons that would presumably have gone forward with them into a general election.

In a general election vs. any Republican — and especially in a general election vs. Trump — the MSM would’ve buried their weaknesses somewhere in the South Pacific and they wouldn’t have been mentioned outside of Conservative media.

And Biden did horribly in the pre-Covid contests of Iowa, NH, and Nevada. The ones where he had to meet ordinary people face-to-face and explain what he was all about. Clyburn rescued him in SC, and then he rode the media wave on Super Tuesday. He didn’t have to do any actual “campaigning” after that, and neither would any other D. who had been the nominee.

Warren would have been tough. Mayor Pete may have been able to play the nice guy stays in the closet (uh-basement) game. And both are a whole lot smarter than Biden at his peak.

Shouldn't really surprise anyone if Dubya did say something along those lines. The Drumpf wasn't exactly polite and deferential to his brother.

I heard something rather amusing the other day in an interview with some aid to Sloe*. A question was posed on whatever policy they were discussing and the response was, "He'll be working on that in exactly the way he said he would on the campaign trail...".

Kind of stopped paying attention right then as I pondered, When the f#$% was he ever on some campaign trail?!?
