Are there NO women who fit the definition of a "slut"? It sounds like you and Big think referring to ANY woman as a slut is wrong. How about the woman who comes up to your car in certain areas of town and asks if you want a date? How about the women who will come to your hotel room by appointment?
Those are prostitutes. Not the same thing.
Ok, I guess my vocabulary is not as precise as yours. What is the difference between a prostitute and a slut?
Also, are there ANY women who fit the definition of a slut?
definition
My take:
A prostitute is somebody who exchanges sexual favors for money.
A slut is a derogatory term that has traditionally been used to describe women who are deemed to have a lot of sexual partners.
The term "slut" is always derogatory and often not applied fairly... men who have many sexual partners are typically admired.
I wouldn't refer to ANY woman as a slut personally. I know women who were quite sexually active in their younger days however I find no reason to demean them.
The main difference between a slut and a prostitute is a prostitute gets paid? I presume most prostitutes "are deemed to have a lot of sexual partners".
One thing that it seems that you, like a lot on the left, has missed is that women and men are different. Like other things that are different, different terms apply. Some attributes that are found to be admirable in men (manliness) may not be as admirable in women, and vice-versa. You see these differences as "unfair". Well, sure, I thought it unfair when I was subject to the military draft and women were not. But not every difference is unfair.
I don't think this word is that important. I don't remember the last time I used it - perhaps never. Actually, I would say that nearly every time I have heard the word used, it was used by a woman to describe another woman. And far be it from me to restrict the choice of a woman's words. I'll leave that to you.
Funny how word usage and meaning change. I just watched a History Channel piece on Burr/Hamilton. The reason for the duel - one used the word "despicable" in referring to the other. Apparently it had a much deeper meaning 300 years ago. But then again, I guess it was "unfair" that only men could duel, so glad that has been corrected.
To me, this whole debate has you and Big acting like kittens chasing a laser pointer.
I know women who have had a lot sexual partners in the past, and I certainly would not refer to any of them as a slut. But also, to the best of my knowledge, none of them engaged in sex for material or professional gain.
BTW, before somebody goes there, I would be in favor of the legalization of prostitution. After, it is not up to us to tell women what they can and cannot do with their bodies.
