NFL 21 Offseason thread
https://www.nfl.com/news/2021-nfl-salary...d-decrease

NFLPA and NFL agreed to a salary cap floor of 175m. Going to be a very interesting offseason as teams make decisions to get under the cap.

Yep. This will impact the Browns because they need to upgrade their defense and Baker Mayfield will soon be getting a market rate starting QB contract. Nick Chubb is also nearing the end of his rookie contract. Odell Beckham, Jr., is making big, big bucks and I don't know if the Browns can justify that luxury much longer.

The Brown have demonstrated they don't need OBJ. Unfortunately his season ending injury will diminish his trade value. I would struggle picking up Baker's 5th year option. While its cool to see the Browns win a playoff game, Mayfield strutting around like he is the key to success is maddening. It's as if he's forgotten that he torpedoed not one, but two coaching staffs during his brief NFL tenure.

Respectfully, I disagree on Baker. He really played within the system that Stefanski laid out this year and he kept his head down with the postgame comments and twitter crap. It resulted in his best year as a pro. He has the respect of his teammates and coaches so inside the locker room is good. Yes, he had to grow up some and the NFL can humble the best of 'em. It didn't help his cause to play under 4 different head coaches and three offensive systems in his first three seasons. These guys don't grow on trees and as you commented in the other thread, the Browns have struggled to find "the guy" in 20 seasons. They will go ahead and pick up his 5th year option and negotiate a longer term deal after next season is my best guess. And I'm on board with that. I think we haven't seen his best playing days yet.

I think it will be interesting to see where Watson ends up and what the Texans will get in return. I am also interested to see if JJ Watt ends up somewhere else...love to have him on the Browns dee line with Myles Garrett.

Have to think that at least a dozen NFL GMs will be working long hours with their staff trying to figure out if they can make a viable offer for Watson and make it work under the salary cap.

I guess my issue with extending Baker is like you said; Stefanski's system played to his strengths. But the Browns team is loaded with talent. I don't think Mayfield is talented enough to bare the weight of an entire scheme on his shoulders.

I'd love for the Steelers to trade for Watson but there's so many holes on this team that we need picks to rebuild. Steelers need to rebuild the OL, find a RB, find a CB (Haden looks like an obvious cap casualty), edge depth, DL depth, slot corner. Going to be a painful 21 in Pittsburgh. Division teams getting better and we have a first place schedule. I think the Bengals will be crazily improved and push for a potential WC spot.

Agree on the Bengals. Joe Burrow [assuming he comes back 100 percent from his injury] is the real deal and may end up being the best QB in the division. I was very impressed with his rook year despite playing behind a crap OLine.

To your Steelers comments - I can't remember the last time a Pitt team was not very good at running the ball. You guys need to get that fixed because Cleveland and Baltimore can run with the best of 'em. Ben is an overpaid dinosaur at this point in his career IMO but I don't know how his contract is structured in terms of cutting ties and moving on. If you get some savings from cap space then that would help to plug some other holes. I think Mason Rudolph is a serviceable QB and would be a nice transition until a FA or a drafted QB can supplant him.

RE: NFL 21 Offseason thread
Speaking of Watson, he reportedly has named his first two choices in a trade...

Quote:According to Armando Salguero of The Miami Herald, Watson prefers to play for the New York Jets, and his No. 2 option would be the Miami Dolphins. Salguero reports that Watson told people the Jets are his top preference because they recently hired Robert Saleh to be their new head coach. Watson apparently valued Saleh so much that he wanted the Texans to interview him for their open head coaching job.

Watson's Wish List

Some NFL personnel execs believe the Texans will ask for three #1 picks and a QB for Watson. I don't know about three but I can see the Jets trading Darnold, two #1 picks, and some extra picks to make the deal.

Quote:"They'll likely ask for at least three first-round picks, a second, a third and a later round pick," one personnel executive told me. "Ultimately I think it depends on whether the team has a viable QB that's available to trade in return."

"They have to leave with at least a player and two firsts and some throw-in picks," another personnel man said. "Preferably a top 10 this year, preferably with a good QB included in the deal."

Said one agent: "Four picks, including three 1s, sounds about right. But since the Texans don't have a ton of leverage after alienating and pissing off a guy who should be the face of their franchise for the next decade, maybe two 1s and a combination of picks and/or swapped choices could be the way."

Let's Make A Deal

Steelers run game ain't no quick fix like some Steelers fans believe. I refuse to believe that a new OL coach plus Najee Harris and suddenly we refind our power run game roots. Those two would certainly help fix it. But Pouncey and DeCastro are on the wrong side of 30. Drafting a T and a C in the first three rounds is more important than getting Najee. There's some solid backs in the later rounds worth exploring especially Trey Sermon who dropped to the 5th round this last simulation I did. TE is also key for the running game.

It seems like the colts would be all over this after rivers annoucement and not having a qb. Question is what will it take to get him? First and a third?

Colts and Broncos make the most sense. Maybe a 3 team deal between Texans, Jets and Lions. Lions send Stafford to Houston, Watson goes to the Jets and the Lions get some draft picks.

Why in the world would a rebuilding team want Stafford? If Watson goes to the Jets Houston IMO will get the 2nd pick in the draft.

Watson is a fool if he wants to go to the Jets. They are just as incompetent as the Texans and would need to give up ALL of their draft capital just to acquire him.
