The Rams wanted a guy who could be consistent. Not a guy who could beat Seattle one week, but lose to the Jets the next.

Even though we all know the draft capital in this deal is so much because the Lions are doing the Rams the favor of taking Goff's contract, the fact remains that the Rams paid two firsts and a third plus a usable QB to get a 33-year-old QB with a long history of injuries.

If Texans management doesn't get significantly more for Watson, they look like morons who traded a young, once-in-a-generation QB and got too little in return. How much would they have to get to not look bad? Four first round picks? Two firsts, a second, and a third, plus an All-Pro player under age 30? That makes it significantly harder for any other team to acquire Watson, and it's even harder on Watson because it makes it a lot more likely that he will have to either sit out the 2021 season or play the 2021 season for the Texans.

Stafford started 136 consecutive games from 2011 through 2019, so he does not really have a injury history and he has played through injuries. The Rams gave up a lot, which tells you how much they wanted to get rid of Goff. The Rams in 2020 were No.1 in total defense and No.10 in rushing offense (yardage per game). The Lions were 30th in rushing offense and 32nd in total defense. Stafford has been carrying the team for years and 2020 was just another example of it.

Over the past two seasons, Stafford has thrown 45 touchdown passes with 15 interceptions in 24 games. Over the past two seasons, Goff has thrown 42 touchdown passes with 29 interceptions in 31 games. Goff has been on a better team. That does not include the fumbles by Goff.

This is a good trade for both teams. The Lions are rebuilding and have three top 100 draft picks over the next three years and Goff to start the rebuilding process. The Rams wanted a QB that could stretch the field and stop turning the ball over. Stafford is an upgrade in both areas.

Who are the Rams stretching the field with at WR? That is the issue with this deal, LA has kneecapped their ability to make any further improvements for the next two years.

The Rams will pick up a 3rd round compensatory pick in 2021 and in 2022 as part of a new NFL minority hiring initiative (Brad Holmes leaving the Rams to become the GM with the Lions). The Rams are also expected to pick up a 3rd round compensatory pick for the loss of Dante Fowler and a 4th round compensatory pick for the loss of Cory Littleton.

They still have a 2nd round pick, 6th round pick and a 7th round pick along with the compensatory picks in 2021, a total of six picks. Their 2nd round pick from last season, wide receiver Van Jefferson, has good speed and can get open deep. Goff was not an accurate deep thrower and at times he seemed unwilling to go deep. That will not be a problem with Stafford.

Yea. Hes just a position coach. But the Steelers hiring Kremm as OL Coach is terrible optics.

There's has to be more to the story. Why did they sign Goff to that huge contract if they didn't think he was the guy? What is it just two seasons removed from the extension? He went to a Super Bowl with them. To me, it's a huge gamble to take on a 32 year old, injury prone QB who has never won a playoff game in three tries. Not to mention - they traded away their #1 picks in 2022 and 2023 to get him. Good luck Rams, you're gonna need it.

My guess, based on articles about the trade: McVay overreacted to Goff not playing well, and that included badmouthing Goff to Troy Aikman who then slammed Goff during game broadcasts. Goff took it badly, their whole relationship went in the toilet, and McVay wanted Goff out no matter what it took.

An indication of how bad it was: Apparently, McVay and Stafford both happened to be vacationing in Cabo when the trade was done. McVay found Stafford and arranged to get together to celebrate, but hadn’t called Goff to tell him of the trade. By the time he did call, Goff had already heard of the trade, and Goff abruptly ended the call with McVay because his dad was calling in at the same time.

last 10 years Stafford has missed exactly 8 games. All in 1 season. So uh, he's not injury prone.

No. There is not more to the story. The Rams gave him a huge contract extension after his 3rd season. It was a mistake. Goff was terrible in his first season under Jeff Fisher and much better with McVay and Todd Gurley the next two seasons. Gurley started struggling with an arthritic knee and Goff regressed. Against the 49ers the past two seasons, he was 0-4, with four touchdowns and four interceptions, and two lost fumbles. Two of the four interceptions were returned for touchdowns. He averaged 202 yards passing in the four games.

The offense the past two seasons has lacked explosive plays. The Rams have had to grind out long drives and they have struggled offensively when they cannot run the ball. Stafford will help give them the explosiveness they lack. Stafford is not injury prone, he still has a gun for an arm and the 0-3 playoff record means absolutely nothing. If you have no running game and no defense, you end up throwing a lot and you take a lot of hits. You are lucky to just make the playoffs. The 2020 Rams would have been the best team he ever played on. The 2021 Rams will likely be that as well.

He’s a good coach, I don’t think that should effect his promotion with the Steelers. When UCLA hired Jim Mora Jr. in 2012, he decided to annually take the Bruins out to the campus of Cal State San Bernardino for two weeks in August for training camp, in the 100 degree heat. He said he wanted to have the players focus on football, but I think the goal was to toughen the Bruins up.

I think the coaches may have gone a little overboard and thought they were back in the 70’s. Kremm played high school football at St. Monica’s in Santa Monica, not exactly a place where they would have been teaching that kind of football. I suspect that he did not learn it in college at Hawaii. It sounds like Mora was pushing the coaches to toughen up the players and Kremm just got carried away.

I had read somewhere that their relationship was strained this season but I did not know any of the details. That would make some sense of why you trade the guy along with those draft assets if things were that bad. The coach should know better that you criticize your player to his face and not to folks outside the locker room. That never ends well.

Well, maybe injury prone is a bit harsh but he was hurt his rook season and I believe either the following season of the one after as well. The point is, he's 32 and suffered a back injury in 2019. He's not a spring chicken anymore.

I don't know if you are a Rams fan but there's a lot of assumptions there. Stafford may in fact be an upgrade but if he takes them farther in the playoffs remains to be seen. Again, I'm skeptical. The other part of it is what they gave up in draft capital. Could the Rams have not used one of their #1 picks to get Goff a weapon on offense to help? What about a trade for a player? To me, it was more than just stats or performance as Wedge indicated upstream.

The Rams made a mistake when they gave Goff the huge extension at the beginning of his fourth season. They had him under contract for a fourth and fifth season and could have franchised tagged him to keep him longer. Goff's 4th & 5th season's did not go well. Over the past two seasons, Goff had 42 touchdown passes and 38 turnovers (29 interceptions, 9 fumbles lost) in 31 games. Goff is second in the NFL in turnovers over the past two seasons with 38.

I disagree with Wedge's theory that McVay "overreacted to Goff not playing well." I think that had been building for months. He was critical of Goff after the Rams fourth consecutive loss to the 49ers in late November. He decided to start John Wolford in the playoff game against the Seahawks. As for getting together in Cabo the night the trade was announced, McVay is friends with Bills receivers coach Chad Hall, who is Kelly Stafford's brother. The connection led to a friendly relationship between the Staffords and McVay in recent years, and upon the trade's completion, Stafford and his wife met for dinner with McVay and his fiancée to celebrate.

I think it was a good trade for both teams. Detroit gets a starting quarterback and three draft picks. Goff has shown he can be a good NFL QB. Stafford gets a chance to win. The Lions have made the playoffs three times in the past 22 years, all three with Stafford, and have not won a division title since 1993. Statistically, Stafford is a great QB except for the win column. He is 16th in all-time passing yardage, 16th in all-time touchdown passes, 4th in passing yardage per game and 7th in 4th quarter comebacks, tied with John Elway at 31. This will be the most talented team Stafford has ever played on in the NFL.

As for draft picks, it is better to keep your first round picks, but the Rams have done a good job of acquiring additional picks after the first round. In 2020, the Rams had two 2nd round picks and two 3rd round picks. In 2019, the Rams had a 2nd round pick and three 3rd round picks.

As for being a Rams fan, I am not, but I watch a lot of NFL football and I live in Southern California, so you hear more about the Rams and the Chargers. Speaking of the Chargers, the Rams had to be aware that the best QB in LA was playing on the Chargers and that had to bother them. It will be more entertaining for LA fans with Herbert and Stafford.

Interesting to see what Chicago [if they are the highest bidder] gives up in compensation after the Stafford deal. The Colts are rumored to be the other high bidder for Wentz.

Chase Young first NFC East guy to win NFL Defensive Player of the Year since some scrub named Lawrence Taylor back in 1981. Amazing.

I actually like the way they're doing these HOF announcements more than the hotel version the day before the game. Allows more of the players family/friends to be there.
